[Giant liposarcoma of the spermatic cord].

Liposarcomas (LS) are malignant mesenchymal tumours which develop in fatty tissues. They are basically found at the retroperitoneum where they are relatively frequent in adults. The most common type is myxoid LS which, although less malignant, has like any other LS a high incidence of local relapses. Primary myxoid liposarcoma of the spermatic cord is an unusual, low-aggressiveness tumour. Under natural development, it can reach large dimensions with only local symptomatology. Pre-operative diagnosis of the paratesticular tumour is often difficult to establish, cuenca the teste suénate be diff

Lower-extremity liposarcoma metastatic to the larynx: case report.

Distant metastases to the larynx are rare. We describe the case of a 46-year-old man who was referred to our head and neck surgery clinic with a 6-week history of sore throat and otalgia. He was found to have a laryngeal lesion that was consistent with a primary myxoid liposarcoma that had been extirpated from a lower extremity earlier To the best of our knowledge, no case of myxoid liposarcoma metastatic to the larynx has been previously reported in the English-language literature.

Cardiac liposarcoma-a review of outcome after surgical resection.

OBJECTIVE: This review was performed to pool the current surgical strategies for cardiac liposarcoma. METHODS: A literature search was performed and all studies published in full-text or abstract forms were eligible for inclusion without applying any language restrictions. Case reports without surgical intervention, reporting noncardiac liposarcoma, animal cases, or review articles were excluded after initial abstract review. Analyzed postoperative outcomes included intraoperative and in-hospital mortality, longest reported survival, and recrudescence. RESULTS: After a critical evaluation 53

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma: unveiling diagnostic delays and multimodal treatment dilemmas.

Liposarcomas are a prevalent subtype of soft tissue sarcomas, constituting less than 1% of all malignancies. Originating in the adipose tissue, they can manifest in various locations and are categorized by the World Health Organization into several subtypes: well-differentiated liposarcomas, dedifferentiated liposarcomas, myxoid liposarcomas, pleomorphic liposarcomas and mixed-type liposarcomas. These tumors typically affect middle-aged and older individuals, and their incidence has been progressively increasing over the years. As liposarcomas advance they tend to encase blood vessels and majo

Recurrent liposarcomas of the abdomen and retroperitoneum: three case reports.

We report three cases of patients with liposarcomas of the abdomen who had been treated during the last 13 years (1980-1993). Two patients were men, aged 29 and 51 years, with tumors of the retroperitoneal space and the third patient was a woman aged 64 years with a tumor in the peritoneal cavity. Therapeutic treatment was as aggressive as possible excision of the tumor. In the case of the first male patient, the histological examination revealed a retroperitoneal myxoid liposarcoma which recurred 5 times within 13 years. In the second male patient, it revealed a well differentiated retroperit

Renal sinus myelolipoma coexistent with renal pelvis papillary transitional cell carcinoma: a case report.

A unique case of renal sinus myelolipoma presenting as a mass coexistent with papillary transitional cell carcinoma is reported. The patient was a 64-year-old man with a history of bladder transitional cell carcinoma. He presented with gross hematuria and a filling defect in the renal pelvis on computed tomography scan. Pathological findings revealed an irregular myxoid fatty mass, in addition to high-grade papillary transitional cell carcinoma. The differential diagnosis included myxoid liposarcoma, myxoid variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (myxofibrosarcoma), and angiomyolipoma. Immun…

Multiple surgical excision for recurrent primary mediastinal liposarcoma.

Liposarcoma is one of the most common soft tissue malignancies, occurring mostly in the extremities and retroperitoneal cavities, and occasionally in the mediastinum of the thoracic cavity. Here, we present a patient undergoing four operations over a period of 33 years because of repeated recurrence of mediastinal liposarcoma. A 34-year-old woman underwent her first surgery for mediastinal liposarcoma in 1986. Ten years later, a recurrent tumour was found during follow-up. The patient underwent a second operation for complete excision. The pathology was liposarcoma, partly myxoid and partly de

Liposarcoma arising in uterine lipoleiomyoma: a report of 3 cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary sarcomas of the uterus are uncommon, leiomyosarcoma being the most frequent. Most uterine sarcomas arise de novo, with malignant transformation of a benign mesenchymal tumor being a very rare event, and is reported only in leiomyomata. DESIGN: The clinicopathologic features of 3 uterine liposarcomas arising in association with a lipoleiomyoma were studied. Immunohistochemistry for desmin, h-caldesmon, S100, and MDM2, and fluorescence in situ hybridization for the t(12;16) (q13;p11) were performed in all cases. RESULT: Patients ranged in age from 49 to 70 (mean, 59) years.

Primary intrathoracic liposarcoma: a clinicopathologic study and prognostic analysis of 23 cases.

BACKGROUND: Primary intrathoracic liposarcoma is an extremely rare malignancy as well as a rare histologic subtype of intrathoracic sarcoma. Relatively few reports appear in the world literatures. We explored the clinicopathologic features and prognostic factors of this tumor in this study. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological data of 23 patients with primary intrathoracic liposarcoma who were treated in Shanghai chest Hospital affiliated to Jiao Tong University, from January 2003 to March 2013. These patients were classified into three groups according to the distinct

Focal rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation in primary liposarcoma.

A unique case of primary myxoid liposarcoma of the thigh, in which focal pleomorphic areas were present containing rhabdomyoblasts, is described. Focal rhabdomyosarcoma in liposarcoma has only rarely been reported previously and only in dedifferentiated liposarcomas of the retroperitoneum. All but one have been recurrences with rhabdomyoblasts being absent in the primary liposarcoma. As rhabdomyoblasts were only focally present, the present case is regarded as liposarcoma with focal divergent rhabdomyoblastic differentiation rather than malignant mesenchymoma.

Sarcoma of the Lung and Mediastinum.

Primary sarcoma of the lung and mediastinum is rare. The diagnosis requires careful exclusion of sarcomatoid carcinoma, sarcomatoid mesothelioma, and metastases from extra-thoracic sites. This review summarizes the key morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular characteristics of sarcomas that are encountered in the lung and mediastinum. The tumor types discussed are synovial sarcoma, well-differentiated/dedifferentiated liposarcoma, myxoid pleomorphic liposarcoma, intimal sarcoma of the pulmonary artery, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, primary pulmon…

[Retroperitoneal liposarcoma: a report of 2 cases and review of 163 cases in Japan].

Two cases of retroperitoneal liposarcoma are reported. Case I was a 71-year-old-male presenting with a mass in the left abdomen. On X-ray examination, a large extrarenal tumor was found in the left retroperitoneal space. The tumor appeared to invade the psoas muscle and the aorta. Exploratory laparotomy was carried out. The histological diagnosis of the tumor was myxoid-type liposarcoma. He died of the disease. Case 2 was a 44-year-old-male who presented with a mass in the left abdomen. On X-ray examination, a large tumor was found in the left retroperitoneal space, and left kidney and the des

Esoteric Diagnostic Considerations for Small Round Cell Tumors in Biopsy Specimens With Extensive Negative Immunohistochemical Profiles: Utilizing Subtle Histopathological Features Prior to Molecular Testing.

Small round cell tumors (SRCTs) are characterized by primitive round cells and a broad differential diagnosis due to their undifferentiated nature, making their diagnosis particularly challenging. Molecular testing is often essential for definitive classification; however, subtle histomorphological features can significantly narrow the differential diagnosis. Here, we present the case of a 44-year-old male who presented with a painless mass (up to 15.6 cm) in the left thigh. Histologic examination of the biopsy revealed solid sheets of monotonous small round cells with scant cytoplasm, hyperch

Six recent liposarcomas including largest to date.

This report describes six cases of liposarcoma. The primary sites were the retroperitoneum in three cases, the lower extremity in two cases and the jejunal mesenterium in one case. One retroperitoneum case had the heaviest liposarcoma (40 kg) that has been reported in the literature. One patient with thigh liposarcoma who developed three recurrences and underwent hemipelvectomy has been free from the disease for the past 6 1/2 years. Histologically, all three retroperitoneum cases showed well-differentiated liposarcoma and two lower extremity cases had myxoid type liposarcoma.

Lipomatous tumors.

Lipomatous tumors are a common group of mesenchymal lesions. Over the years the major changes in the classification of lipomatous tumors have included the addition of several new variants of lipoma, the use of the term atypical lipoma for well differentiated liposarcoma of the subcutaneous tissue, and recognition of the entity dedifferentiated liposarcoma. Lipomas, the most common lipomatous tumor, account for nearly one-half of all benign lesions. In their typical form they seldom present diagnostic problems for the pathologist. However, lipomas occurring in deep locations (e.g., intramuscula

When is a lipoma not a lipoma? Case report presenting a lipoblastoma-like tumor of the gluteal cleft in an older gentleman with literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Lipoblastoma-like tumors are rare tumors that can be confused with lipoblastomas and liposarcomas but have distinct characteristics. This tumor has previously been identified in the vulva of females, and recently in isolated cases of young males. Given its rarity, we present an instance of this tumor in an older man, demonstrating that this pathology is not limited to a specific age or sex, and surgeons and pathologists must be aware of it in their differential. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old male presented for evaluation of an enlarging mass in his right glutea

Liposarcoma of the posterior mediastinum in a child.

Liposarcoma is rare in children and rarely occurs in the posterior mediastinum in any age group. A massive intrathoracic tumor in a 17-year-old young man was a diagnostic dilemma; preoperative radiographic evaluation and biopsy led us to believe it was a teratoma. At operation, a poorly differentiated myxoid liposarcoma originating from the posterior mediastinum was found and excised. To our knowledge, this is the first liposarcoma of the posterior mediastinum reported in a patient less than 18 years old.

Paratesticular liposarcomas: A rare but crucial diagnosis. Case series and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Soft tissue sarcomas arise from mesenchymal tissue, with liposarcomas being the largest subgroup. These malignancies are classified into five subtypes by the WHO: atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcoma (ALT/WDLPS), dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS), myxoid liposarcoma, pleomorphic liposarcoma, and myxoid pleomorphic liposarcoma. WDLPS and DDLPS are the most prevalent, the latter being associated with higher metastatic rates (15-30%) and a 5-year mortality of 28-30% if metastases are present. This report discusses three cases of rare paratesticular liposarcom
