In June 1866, Patrick Manson (1844-1922), newly qualified in medicine at Aberdeen University, arrived in Formosa (Taiwan) to begin a career in the service of the Chinese Imperial Maritime customs. A retrospective epidemiological study of abdominal tuberculosis in a defined population in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets was conducted between January 1985 and 31 December 1989. The total population of 163,900 included a mean of 20,732 Bangladeshis. Of the 13 cases diagnosed 8 were Bangladeshi, with equal involvement of the peritoneum and intestine. The relation between air pollution and mortality in London was examined for the winters of 1958-1972. The data exhibited a high degree of autocorrelation, requiring analyses using autoregressive models. One hundred and thirty-four deaths recorded as open verdicts in the Inner West London Coroner's District during 1969 and 1970 have been surveyed for evidence of mental illness. For 110 (82 per cent) of these deaths the probable verdicts were suicide or accident and they were reclassified as undetermined deaths. Two hundred and fifty years ago, teething was believed to be common cause of death in infants. A contemporary publication (The Scots Magazine) gives the annual causes of death in Edinburgh and London between the years 1739-92. The figures reveal that there were more deaths from teething in Edinburgh than London, although the reasons for this were not explained. One possibility is that the mechanism of recording the deaths was not medically valid.

The objective of this study was to establish a surveillance programme to monitor high risk sexual behaviour among homosexual and bisexual men socializing and/or using health care services in London.
