A bioinspired mucoadhesive restores lubrication of degraded cartilage through reestablishment of lamina splendens.

Adsorbed lubricious films composed of biomacromolecules are natively present at all articulating interfaces in the human body where they provide ultralow friction and maintain normal physiological function. Biolubrication gets impaired due to diseases such as osteoarthritis, in which cartilage damage results from alterations in synovial fluid and lamina splendens composition. Osteoarthritis is treated with hyaluronic acid (HA) orally or via intra-articular injection, but due to the poor adsorption of HA on the cartilage surface in the absence of adhesive molecules, pain relief is temporary. Energy efficient reduced graphene oxide additives: Mechanism of effective lubrication and antiwear properties.

Optimized concentration of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in the lube is one of the important factors for effective lubrication of solid body contacts. At sufficiently lower concentration, the lubrication is ineffective and friction/wear is dominated by base oil. In contrast, at sufficiently higher concentration, the rGO sheets aggregates in the oil and weak interlayer sliding characteristic of graphene sheets is no more active for providing lubrication. However, at optimized concentration, friction coefficient and wear is remarkably reduced to 70% and 50%, respectively, as compared to neat oil.

An analytical model to predict interstitial lubrication of cartilage in migrating contact areas.

For nearly a century, articular cartilage has been known for its exceptional tribological properties. For nearly as long, there have been research efforts to elucidate the responsible mechanisms for application toward biomimetic bearing applications. It is now widely accepted that interstitial fluid pressurization is the primary mechanism responsible for the unusual lubrication and load bearing properties of cartilage. Although the biomechanics community has developed elegant mathematical theories describing the coupling of solid and fluid (biphasic) mechanics and its role in interstitial lubr

A new assessment in vitro of human salivary lubrication using a compliant substrate.

The lubrication effect of salivary secretions was assessed in terms of separating a rigid object from a compliant substrate. There was little difference among the various secretions of a single donor. The viscosity of salivas increased as a function of time. Neither the friction testing nor viscometry provided an adequate model of the tissue-coating function ascribed to saliva.

Molecular Lubricant Mitigates Self-Assembled Monolayer Aggregation in Perovskite Photovoltaics.

Molecular aggregation in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) remains a critical bottleneck for inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly at buried interfaces where this phenomenon induces detrimental defects that severely compromise photovoltaic performance and operational stability. Addressing this challenge requires the development of novel functional materials capable of precisely regulating molecular packing in SAMs and suppressing their aggregation, which is a key research direction for enhancing device efficiency and durability. Herein, we introduce 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium te

When Lubricant Retention Increases Ice Adhesion: Ionic Liquids in SLIPS.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) can reduce ice adhesion, but their durability depends on coupled wetting, rheological, and phase-transition effects. Here, seven imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) with varied alkyl and disiloxane substituents were evaluated as lubricants for laser-textured superhydrophobic aluminum. Surface tension, viscosity, thermal behavior, lubricant retention, wetting, and ice adhesion at -10 °C were correlated over 30 icing-deicing cycles. All freshly prepared coatings were water-wettable but exhibited weak droplet pinning, with sliding angles of 1.4-7.5°, de

An integrated lubricating and antibacterial hydrogel coating for the inner surface of medical catheters.

Silicone rubber (PDMS) catheters are prone to tissue friction and bacterial infection due to their inherent hydrophobicity, yet achieving a durable and functional coating on the inner lumen remains technically challenging. This study presents a multifunctional hydrogel coating designed for the inner wall of medical silicone tubing to address these issues. The coating, composed of PHEMA-PVP-glycerol, was applied via selective benzophenone pretreatment, followed by UV curing. Systematic optimization revealed that a 40% glycerol content achieves an optimal balance of properties, yielding strong i

A Bioinspired Protein Bottlebrush Polymer with Enhanced Lubricating and Anti-Inflammation Properties.

The development of biomimetic lubricants with superior lubrication, anti-inflammatory activity, and biocompatibility is urgently needed for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Inspired by the architecture of biological lubricin and the exceptional lubrication of synovial joints, we designed a protein-based brush polymer by employing proteins as intrinsic macromolecular backbones. Specifically, we synthesized a biomimetic bottlebrush polymer, mHSA-g-PMPC, in which a denatured human serum albumin (HSA) backbone was grafted with zwitterionic poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine] (PMP

Automated Covalent Microcontact Bioprinting of Lubricant-Infused Microarrays for Biological Assays.

Microcontact bioprinting (µCP), which utilizes elastomeric stamps to transfer biorecognition agents (bioinks) onto substrates, offers advantages such as customizability, cost-effectiveness, and versatility for bioassays. Despite its prevalent use in laboratory settings, µCP faces challenges in achieving the repeatability and reproducibility required for industrial applications. Here, a µCP method is introduced that accommodates the immobilization of various biorecognition agents, while preserving bioactivity for use in bioassays. A key innovation lies in combining µCP with fluorosilanization t

Anti-biofouling organogel and substrate independent coatings with a continuous lubricating network.

Organogels have distinct advantages over hydrogels in terms of solvent compatibility, mechanical robustness, prolonged thermal and environmental durability, and affinity for hydrophobic compounds. However, organogels have yet to replace hydrogels for biomedical applications owing to toxicity concerns, lack of chemical durability, ease of fabrication, and flexibility of using green solvents. The current work exploits the facile amine-epoxy ring opening reaction to develop a mechanically durable, environmentally and thermally stable organogel that is strategically a) loaded with an antimicrobial

Nanoparticle Lubricant and Imaging Agent: Preventing and Assessing Cartilage Tissue Damage.

Introducing additives to industrial lubricants reduces friction and wear between articulating metal surfaces by mechanistically impeding interfacial adhesion, heat dissipation, and abrasion. With this inspiration, we report the synthesis and use of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) nanoparticles as a nanolubricant and tribosupplement (i.e., tribology-augmenting agent) for articular cartilage. Further, as tantalum oxide absorbs X-rays, the nanolubricant is also a contrast-agent for computed tomography (CT). These dual purpose nanoparticles, decorated with a short poly (ethylene glycol) and cationic trimet

Liposomic lubricants suppress acute inflammatory gene regulation in the joint in vivo.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a widespread, debilitating joint disease associated with articular cartilage degradation. It is driven via mechano-inflammatory pathways, whereby catabolic genes in the cartilage-embedded chondrocytes are presumed up-regulated due to increased shear stress arising from friction at the cartilage surface as joints articulate. The enhanced expression of these cartilage-degrading and inflammatory genes leads to tissue degeneration. However, the nature of the stress, and how the cells within the joint respond to it, are poorly understood. Here we show, in a proof of concept s

Injectable lubricant-coated hyaluronic acid-dopamine for the repair of early osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an irreversible disease of continuous degradation of cartilage, and natural joint super-lubrication is thought to provide hydrated lubrication to articular cartilage. Synovial joint fluid consists of hyaluronic acid (HA) and numerous brush-like macromolecules, exhibits a high affinity for cartilage proteins, and forms a hydrated layer on the cartilage surface. When cartilage friction increases, the surface layer of the cartilage becomes ruptured or damaged, and the cartilage hydration layer is destroyed, subsequently evolving into early OA. In this study, dopamine (DOPA)

Confinement enhanced viscosity vs shear thinning in lubricated ice friction.

The ice surface is known for presenting a very small kinetic friction coefficient, but the origin of this property remains highly controversial to date. In this work, we revisit recent computer simulations of ice sliding on atomically smooth substrates, using newly calculated bulk viscosities for the TIP4P/ice water model. The results show that spontaneously formed premelting films in static conditions exhibit an effective viscosity that is about twice the bulk viscosity. However, upon approaching sliding speeds in the order of m/s, the shear rate becomes very large, and the viscosities decrea

Construction of Zwitterionic Coatings with Lubricating and Antiadhesive Properties for Invisible Aligner Applications.

Invisible aligners have been widely used in orthodontic treatment but still present issues with plaque formation and oral mucosa abrasion, which can lead to complicated oral diseases. To address these issues, hydrophilic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) coatings with lubricating, antifouling, and antiadhesive properties have been developed on the aligner materials (i.e., polyethylene terephthalate glycol, PETG) via a simple and feasible glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-assisted coating strategy. Poly(GMA-co-SBMA) is grafted onto the aminated PETG surface via the ring-opening reaction of G

Do sperm and lubricants gel well with each other? A systematic review.

Vaginal lubricants are commonly used to aid sexual pleasure and/or to help combat vaginal dryness and dyspareunia. Several studies have reported their impact on sperm function, however there are no published guidelines to help healthcare professionals and couples select a vaginal lubricant that is 'sperm-safe'. To address this, we conducted a literature search using both PubMed and Scopus to identify and appraise manuscripts that reported the impact of lubricants on sperm function. We did not restrict the literature search by year of publication, and we only included manuscripts that looked at

Lubricating Microneedles System with Multistage Sustained Drug Delivery for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a typical joint degenerative disease that is prevalent worldwide and significantly affects the normal activities of patients. Traditional treatments using diclofenac (DCF) as an anti-inflammatory drug by oral administration and transdermal delivery have many inherent deficiencies. In this study, a lubricating microneedles (MNs) system for the treatment of osteoarthritis with multistage sustained drug delivery and great reduction in skin damage during MNs penetration is developed. The bilayer dissolvable MNs system, namely HA-DCF@PDMPC, is prepared by designating the comp

Thermal Transport and Rheological Properties of Hybrid Nanofluids Based on Vegetable Lubricants.

Nanofluids based on vegetal oil with different wt.% of carbon nanotubes (CNT), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and its hybrid (h-BN@CNT) were produced to investigate the effects of these nano-additives on the thermal conductivity and rheological properties of nanofluids. Stable suspensions of these oil/nanostructures were produced without the use of stabilizing agents. The dispersed nanostructures were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS, while the thermal conductivity and rheological characteristics were studied by a transient hot-wire method and steady-state flow tests, respectively.
