[A clinical study on cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis: the position of a low invasive needle aspiration procedure for the diagnosis of cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis].

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis has been performed by histological examination using excisional biopsy specimens. However a non-invasive diagnostic procedure alternative to invasive excisional biopsy has been required and fine needle aspiration cytology as well the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique have become useful modalities. The aim of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of needle aspiration as a less invasive and more rapid diagnostic procedure than excisional biopsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-one excisinal biopsy specimens and 20 needle …

Application of confocal microscopy for detecting tuberculous lymphadenitis.

Tuberculous lymphadenitis, a form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, is diagnosed through the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in tissue samples. Lymphadenitis may be caused by both nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC). Here, we highlight the advantage of using a fluorescent dye in combination with Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) for identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis in histological sections of lymph node tissue after correlating with Clinical, histopathological, and microbiological findings. CLSM enables the differentiation of no…

Clinical features of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis in children.

UNLABELLED: Due to its nonspecific clinical characteristics, histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL) is often misdiagnosed as a suppurative cervical lymphadenitis and lymphoma. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of HNL in pediatric patients. We retrospectively identified 61 patients with histopathologically confirmed HNL. Clinical and laboratory data, including age, sex, clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations, histological discoveries, treatment, and outcomes, were collected from the medical records to determine associations with extracervical ly…

Toxoplasmic Lymphadenitis Presenting as a Tiny Neck Tumor.

(1) Background: Toxoplasmic lymphadenitis (TL), caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, is a worldwide zoonosis. We report a case of TL in the head and neck region diagnosed using ultrasound (US)-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), serological tests, and pathological findings. (2) Case Presentation: A 51-year-old female with a chief complaint of a left posterior neck mass that had been growing for approximately 2 weeks. TL was confirmed by histopathological examinations and serological tests. US-guided FNAC and en bloc resection of the lymph node were performed. The diagnosis was…

Necrotizing lymphadenitis : A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing lymphadenitis is a rare disease. It is often misdiagnosed because of the lack of typical clinical manifestations. It is worth noting that necrotizing lymphadenitis may be a precursor lesion of systemic lupus erythematosus or tumours, so regular follow-up is needed to facilitate early diagnosis. Here, we report a case and conduct a literature analysis summarizing the clinical features of necrotizing lymphadenitis and its treatment and management practices. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old young woman presented with fever and lymphadenopathy as the main clinical manifest…

Cysticercosis masquerading as tuberculous lymphadenitis in supraclavicular region.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larvae of the tapeworm Taenia solium. In humans, cysticercosis spreads through fecal-oral route by ingesting food contaminated with eggs of pork tapeworm. The most frequent sites affected are central nervous system, eye, subcutaneous tissue, and skeletal muscle. We report a case of cysticercosis presenting as left supraclavicular swelling which is a rare site, diagnosed on fine-needle aspiration.

Three children of meningoencephalitis with Kikuchi necrotizing lymphadenitis.

BACKGROUND: Kikuchi necrotizing lymphadenitis (KNL) is a rare and benign cause of lymphadenopathy, most often cervical. The etiology of KNL remains unknown. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement, such as in meningoencephalitis, is a very rare clinical manifestation of KNL, especially in children. CASE REPORTS: A 12-year-old boy presented with unilateral cervical lymphadenopathy and fever. Histopathological findings led to the diagnosis of KNL. He revisited due to severe headache and vomiting one week later. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis demonstrated pleocytosis (lymphocytic 57%), high…

Effect of oral cephalexin in the treatment of BCG lymphadenitis.

Lymphadenitis and abscess formation are the most common side effects of vaccination with Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG). The lower the child's age at the time of vaccination, the higher the incidence of BCG lymphadenitis tends to be. Although various therapeutic approaches are in use for the treatment of BCG lymphadenitis, there is no consensus on which of them is optimal. This study aimed to determine whether oral cephalexin treatment hastens recovery from BCG lymphadenitis. The study involved 40 children (24 boys and 16 girls) with BCG lymphadenitis who were referred to Qazvin Children's Hosp…

Tuberculosis or tularemia? A molecular study in cervical lymphadenitis.

BACKGROUND: Over the last two to three decades there has been a marked decrease in certain bacterial infections in Turkey. One of them is tuberculosis. Of note, statistics published by the Turkish Ministry of Health (MoH) show decreasing pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), but on the other hand, increasing extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). The most common form of EPTB is tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis (TCL). The increase in the number of TCL cases despite the decline in cases of PTB is seen as a paradoxical issue. In contrast there has been an increase in the number of oropharyngeal tularemia …

Cryptococcal lymphadenitis in HIV: a chance diagnosis by FNAC.

Cryptococcosis is a life threatening, opportunistic fungal disease in human immunodeficiency virus-infected individual. Lymph node involvement as a presenting feature in Cryptococcosis is not a common manifestation. A prompt diagnosis is of utmost importance in this disseminated form of cryptococcosis. There are very few reports, however, of cryptococcal lymphadenitis as a presenting feature. We report here a case of cryptococcal lymphadenitis that was diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology of the involved cervical lymph node.

Atlantoaxial rotatory fixation in a case of tubercular lymphadenitis.

Atlantoaxial fixation is a relatively rare cause of torticollis which may be easily missed in practice. Early diagnosis is important as this indicates a compromised atlantoaxial complex with the potential to cause neural damage or even death. Here, we report a case of atlantoaxial rotatory fixation in a 13 yr old male with torticollis for two years and history of defaulting treatment for tubercular lymphadenitis. In this case, the odontoid peg view revealed asymmetric distance between the odontoid and lateral mass of atlas which was confirmed with Fluoroscopy and Computed Tomography (CT) scan.…
