PURPOSE: Vulvar melanoma is a rare malignant tumour. Its surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment whilst the surgical management of regional lymph nodes remains controversial; on the contrary elective inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy causes considerable morbidity. Lymphoscintigraphy (LS) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) are accurate staging procedures of lymph node status in breast cancer and cutaneous melanoma patients. In this retrospective paper we report our experience of LS and SLNB in vulvar melanoma patients.
METHODS: Twenty-two consecutive patients with a diagnosis of vulvar

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the need for delayed lymphoscintigraphy imaging for sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in stage I and II breast cancer patients using intradermal injection of (99m)Tc-antimony sulfide colloid.
METHOD: Seventy-five patients with early-stage breast cancer were included in our study. Periareolar intradermal injections of 0.5 mCi/0.2 mL (99m)Tc-antimony sulfide colloid was used for the patients without previous excisional biopsy (45 patients). Two intradermal injection of 0.5 mCi/0.2 mL (99m)Tc-antimony sulfide colloid was used on each side of the dermal incision in patients

BACKGROUND: Lymphoscintigraphy (LSG) has been widely used as an additional modality to sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) using isotope. However, the significance of the number of LSG-visualized axillary nodes has not been fully understood. We analyzed this and discussed its potential as a modality to complement SLNB.
METHODS: Ninety-one breasts and axillary lymph nodal status were evaluated retrospectively. All patients were examined by LSG using isotope and subsequently by SLNB.
RESULTS: Nine patients (9.9%) had no LSG-visualized axillary node, while 61 patients (67.0%) had only 1 node, and

BACKGROUND: The technique of lymphoscintigraphy may allow a more selective approach to the management of clinically negative neck nodes among patients with cutaneous head and neck melanoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A group of 97 patients with cutaneous head and neck melanoma had preoperative lymphoscintigraphy using intradermal injections of technetium 99m antimony trisulfide colloid to identify sentinel nodes. Fifty-one patients were eligible for clinical analysis after initial definitive treatment by wide excision only (n = 11), wide excision and elective dissection of the neck (n = 19) or axi

Thirty-two women with breast cancer considered in active phase underwent, successively: internal mammary lymphoscintigraphy with 99m rhenium sulfide, chemotherapy and Pathey-type mastectomy with dissection of the axillary and internal mammary lymph nodes. Lymphoscintigraphy was successful in 97% of the cases, without complications. Its specificity was 0.88 (range: 0.76--0.99) and the sensitivity 0.6 (range: 0.19--0.92). Internal mammary lymph node dissection was technically successful in 87.5% of the cases; one patient developed chondritis. Thus, lymphoscintigraphy is usually successful, witho

A diagnostic modality to study parasternal lymph nodes was examined at the Cancer Control Agency of British Columbia, Vancouver. Forty-five patients with carcinoma of the breast were studied. The data correlate well with that from other centres in regard to anatomic validity, lymph node distribution, cross drainage and findings in relation to the stage of disease. The frequency of lymphoscintigraphic abnormalities was almost twice as high in relation to lesions situated in the centre and inner half of the breast as compared with outer half lesions. Twenty-eight per cent of patients demonstrate

OBJECTIVES: Lymphedema is a chronic disease that occurs frequently after breast cancer treatment. For the treatment of lymphedema, surgical approach such as vascularized lymph node transfer and super-microscopic lymphovenous anastomosis surgery is well established. Complex decongestive therapy (CDT) and sympathetic ganglion block (SGB) are two non-surgical therapeutic options. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of lymphoscintigraphy in guiding the selection of the optimal non-surgical treatment in lymphedema.
METHODS: A total of 81 lymphedema patients who underwent lymphoscintigra

We reviewed data from 160 consecutive patients (89 M/71 F; 53.5 [range, 9-88] years) who had under-gone lymphoscintigraphy and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SNB) in our hospital for histologically proven cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) (located on the upper limb: 33; lower limb: 57; trunk: 44; and head and neck: 26 patients), with a Breslow index > 1 mm and without clinical or radiologic evidence of metastatic spread. Colloidal (99m)Tc-rhenium sulfide (36-76 MBq) was injected intradermally in the four quadrants around the tumorectomy scar, followed by dynamic acquisition and static imaging. S

Lymphoscintigraphy allows to get intravital contrast of functionally valuable lymph collectors of the extremity. A comparative analysis was made of the state of lymph flow in healthy subjects, in patients with breast cancer and in patients with the completed cycle of treatment of breast cancer having postmastectomy edema and without it. The investigation was performed in 280 extremities. Principal variants of the normal lymph flow (collector, diffuse, nodal) were marked out. Possible compensatory mechanisms ameliorating the draining function of the extremity were followed in patients with bloc

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to emphasize the instrumental role of preoperative lymphoscintigraphy in the surgical treatment of patients with malignant melanoma.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The efficacy of lymphoscintigraphy is reflected in its ability to reveal cutaneous lymphatic drainage to regional nodal basins that are at risk for melanoma metastases but not necessarily discernable to be at risk through standard historical anatomical guidelines or clinical experience. This preoperative lymphatic mapping technique has contributed greatly to the accuracy and efficiency of staging p

Forty women with breast cancer underwent imaging by internal mammary lymphoscintigraphy (IMLS), which was correlated with the results of CT and MRI of the chest. IMLS was performed and interpreted using the previously described methods of Ege. It identified 22 instances of ipsilateral internal mammary nodal involvement, none of which corresponded to cases of abnormally enlarged (diameter greater than 1.0 cm) internal mammary nodes on CT and/or MRI. Positive IMLS was associated with axillary nodal metastases in 15 out of 22 instances. The authors conclude that IMLS provides information on regio

The role of nuclear medicine in the detection of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in primary breast cancer is very useful to determine regional lymphatic drainage from the affected breast, mainly its anatomical and/or tumoral individual variability and to determine the initial tumor stage. We present the case of an infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast (T2) in the junction of the inner quadrants of the right breast studied by lymphoscintigraphy and gamma probe detection. Three non-metastatic sentinel lymph nodes were found with the selective lymphadenectomy: two in the ipsilateral axilla and

Aim A lymphoscintigraphy is a crucial diagnostic tool for visualizing lymph nodes. This scan plays a significant role in determining the treatment and recovery plan for the patients. Due to the small lymph node size, obtaining high-quality images is important to prevent inaccurate results. We aimed to identify the most effective method for enhancing image quality through postprocessing techniques and altering the image reconstruction process. Methods Two data sets were utilized in this study. First, National Electrical Manufacturers Association body phantom was filled with [ 99m Tc]Tc-pertec

BACKGROUND: Preoperative lymphoscintigraphy is commonly used in sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for patients with early breast cancer; however, its significance to predict SLN metastasis remains to be determined.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty patients were enrolled in a feasibility study of SLNB. Patients with clinically node-negative breast cancer were eligible for this study. Dynamic lymphoscintigraphy was performed before SLNB. All patients underwent SLNB followed by axillary lymph node dissection.
RESULTS: A dual mapping procedure using isotope and dye injections was performed. SLNs were

INTRODUCTION: To analyse and determine the clinical value of lymphoscintigraphy for sentinel lymph node (SLN) localisation in woman undergoing surgery for breast cancer, and evaluate the predictive value of SLN versus axillary lymph node (ALN) status in these patients.
METHODS: Preoperative breast lymphoscintigraphy was performed in 35 female patients with breast cancer and clinically-negative ALNs. The mean age was 52.8 years (age range 38 to 73 years). The lymphoscintigraphy was performed using 74 MBq of Tc-99m nanocolloid subdermal injection over the tumour. The SLN location was marked on

Because sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) of esophageal cancer can be widely located between the neck and the upper abdomen, lymphoscintigraphy plays an important role in their detection, but some modifications are required to clearly visualize their locations. Recently, we applied the stereoscopic imaging method by adding the 10-degree oblique view to the conventional lymphoscintigraphy for SLNs, so that we could better determine SLN locations on the basis of depth information. In this report, we describe a case in which the oblique view of the lymphoscintigram contributed to improving the visualiz
