Balkwill angle, mandibular occlusal plane angle and temporomandibular joint morphology: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The shape and structure of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be affected by many factors and occlusal factors are considered important factors. Although many scholars have studied the correlation between the occlusal plane (OP) and TMJ morphological characteristics in different types of malocclusion, it is still unclear whether the Balkwill angle and mandibular occlusal plane (MOP) angle affect the TMJ morphology. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlations between the Balkwill angle, the MOP angle and TMJ morphology in adults with skeletal Class II Division II ma

Assessment of Severity of Malocclusion and Orthodontic Treatment Need Using the Dental Esthetic Index and Angle's Classification: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Angle's classification is the most widely used instrument for evaluation of malocclusion. The dental esthetic index (DAI) is a reliable, valid, and universally accepted cross-cultural index adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) that links objective, clinical, and subjective esthetic factors to produce a single score that reflects the severity and the treatment needs of the malocclusion. The present study aims to evaluate Angle's classification and DAI to assess the severity of malocclusion and treatment needs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional st

The "Surgery-Only" Paradigm in Orthognathic Surgery: A Contemporary Analysis of Three Indications.

Orthognathic surgery is applied to correct significant skeletal discrepancies in the maxillofacial region. In recent years, increasing attention has been directed toward the Surgery-First Approach (SFA), which is believed to offer notable advantages. This approach primarily addresses underlying skeletal irregularities. Given the substantial impact of facial appearance on psychosocial well-being, the enhancement of facial aesthetics is recognized as one of the primary goals of orthognathic treatment. Within this context, the SFA has emerged as an alternative to the conventional approach due to

Facial soft tissue thickness in individuals with different occlusion patterns in adult Turkish subjects.

Knowledge of variation in facial soft tissue thickness is important for forensic anthropologists, dentists, and plastic surgeons. Forensic anthropologists use such information as a guide in facial reconstruction and superimposition methods. The purpose of this study was to measure facial tissue thicknesses of adult males and females of Turkish origin across different types of occlusion, and to compare the results with each other and with values obtained for other populations. The study was conducted on 200 healthy individuals. The analysis of facial tissue thickness included 20 landmarks (10 d

Analyzing the Role of Malnourishment in Malocclusion: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion is defined as an occlusion in which there is malrelationship between the arches in any of the three planes or anomalies in tooth position beyond normal limits, the etiology being multifactorial. Malnutrition may also be allied to malocclusion, predominantly crowding, due to insufficient space for the teeth to erupt in the correct place. OBJECTIVES: The present study was conducted to investigate the role of diet as an etiological factor in the occurrence of malocclusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and twenty malnourished subjects were examined by a single expe
