Shaken baby syndrome: inflicted cerebral trauma. Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect, 1993-1994.

Physical abuse is the leading cause of serious head injury in infants. While physical abuse has in the past been a diagnosis of exclusion, data regarding the nature and frequency of head trauma consistently support a medical presumption of child abuse when a child younger than one year of age has intracranial injury. Shaken baby syndrome is a serious form of child maltreatment, most often involving infants younger than six months of age. It occurs commonly, yet it is frequently overlooked in its most subtle form and underdiagnosed in its most serious expression. Caretakers may misrepresent or

Impact of mandatory COVID-19 shelter-in-place order on controlled substance use among rural versus urban communities in the United States.

PURPOSE: Mandatory COVID-19 shelter-in-place (SIP) orders have been imposed to fight the pandemic. They may also have led to unintended consequences of increased use of controlled substances especially among rural communities due to increased social isolation. Using the data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers, this study tests the hypothesis that the poison control centers received higher rates of calls related to exposures to controlled substances from rural counties than they did from urban counties during the SIP period. METHODS: Call counts received by the poison cont

The epidemiologic trends of scabies among Israeli soldiers: a 28-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is not a notifiable disease in most countries. Thus, the reported rates of the disease in large populations are usually inaccurate and based on estimations. Scabies is usually reported only when large outbreaks occur. OBJECTIVE: This article describes the global epidemiology of scabies in the Israel Defense Force. The data used in this study are based on the routine and mandatory reporting of every individual case of scabies to the Army Health Branch Epidemiology Department since 1968. RESULTS: There was a period of 13 years of quiescence from the implementation of report…

Dementia and motor vehicle crash hospitalizations: Role of physician reporting laws.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of physician reporting laws and state licensing requirements on crash hospitalizations among drivers with dementia. METHODS: A study of drivers hospitalized because of vehicle crashes, identified from the State Inpatient Databases of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the effect of mandatory physician reporting of at-risk drivers and state licensing requirement on the prevalence of dementia among hospitalized drivers. RESULTS: Physician reporting laws, mandated or legally protected, were not

State Child Abuse and Mandated Reporting Policies for Prenatal Substance Use and Congenital Syphilis Case Rates: United States, 2018-2022.

Objectives. To estimate the association of state policies that define prenatal substance use as child abuse and mandate that health care professionals report prenatal substance use to child protective services with congenital syphilis case rates. Methods. We used 2018 to 2022 US data on congenital syphilis case notifications to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. We conducted linear regression with a generalized estimating equation approach to compare congenital syphilis case rates in states with a child abuse policy only, a mandated reporting policy only, and both polices to

"Nothing Was Done": Experiences of continued sexual abuse after disclosing to a mandated reporter among youth in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Disclosing ongoing child sexual abuse (CSA) to a mandated reporter should facilitate youth safety. Unfortunately, youth may continue to experience abuse after disclosure, although little research has examined this phenomenon. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to understand when and why the child protection process fails after youth disclose to a mandated reporter. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Hotline support specialists completed an online survey about 124 anonymous hotline chats with youth whose abuse continued after a prior disclosure to a mandated reporter. METHODS: We thematically analyzed s

Nurses' intention to report child abuse in Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a prevalent problem with short and long-term consequences. While most countries have enacted child abuse reporting laws, the Saudi healthcare system has not paid sufficient attention to nurses' role in the reporting of child abuse. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to 1) identify the factors associated with nurses' intention to report child abuse by testing a hypothetical model; 2) examine the patterns underlying their intention to report child abuse; and 3) investigate the differences in reporting based on clinical practice areas. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A convenience

Exploring the influence of reporting delay on criminal justice outcomes: comparing child and adult reporters of childhood sexual abuse.

Delay between disclosure and reporting child sexual abuse is common and has significant implications for the prosecution of such offenses. While we might expect the relationship to be a linear one with longer delay reducing the likelihood of prosecution, the present study confirms a more complex interaction. Utilizing data from 2,079 police records in Northern Ireland, the study investigated the impact of reporting delay on pretrial criminal justice outcomes for child and adult reporters of child sexual abuse. While teenagers were found to be the group most disadvantaged by reporting delay, in

Factors related to child maltreatment in children presenting with burn injuries.

The underpinnings of maltreatment in children presenting with burn injuries are necessary to discern as detection and prevention rest on a clear delineation of factors associated with maltreatment. Inaccurate identification of child victims can result in perpetuation of the maltreatment and its attendant neuropsychological sequela. The authors sought to determine factors associated with maltreatment in children presenting with burn injuries, which would guide the burn team in assessing the likelihood of maltreatment. All consenting children admitted with burn injuries were surveyed regarding t

[Injuries from violence in young children--signs, management and diagnostics].

Inflicted injuries in infants and toddlers may easily be missed unless clinicians who care for children are alert to sometimes subtle clues in the history and physical exam. Any injury which is unexplained or incompatible with the developmental capabilities of the child or inconsistent with the given history should prompt a medical evaluation for suspected physical abuse. The most common cause of serious head injuries in infants younger than 12 months is child abuse. Shaking and blunt head trauma can result in injuries such as subdural hemorrhage, diffuse retinal hemorrhage, and brain and spin

Comparison of meningococcal disease surveillance systems - United States, 2005-2008.

Meningococcal disease is a nationally notifiable disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. Rates of the disease have decreased since 2000 and are currently at a historic low. The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) and Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs) are the two surveillance systems in the United States that track cases of meningococcal disease. Whereas NNDSS (a passive surveillance system) covers all of the United States and records both probable and confirmed cases of meningococcal disease, ABCs (an active surveillance system) covers six states an

"Broken heart" syndrome in an elder abuse case: forensic considerations from the case.

"Takotsubo" cardiomyopathy (also known as stress cardiomyopathy or "broken heart syndrome") is a recently recognised transient condition that frequently mimics acute coronary syndrome. It is typically precipitated by acute emotional stress. Elder abuse is the infliction of physical, emotional or psychological harm on an older adult. As in other forms of abuse, elder abuse is a complex problem, easily prone to misconceptions and, therefore, to under-reporting. Herein, the authors present a case of a 76-year-old Caucasian woman, living in a dysfunctional family environment, who presented to her

[Detection of child abuse: missed opportunities in emergency rooms in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil].

Emergency rooms require special consideration since their often-distressful routines may hamper the detection and handling of family violence cases. This study estimated the magnitude of violence against children reported by users of two emergency hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It also evaluated the degree of underreporting by contrasting the present findings to cases reported routinely. 524 parents/guardians of children under 12 treated at the hospitals from January to March 2005 were interviewed. Twelve-month prevalence of family violence was measured with the Conflict Tactics Scales:

Invasive meningococcal disease in Austria 2002: assessment of completeness of notification by comparison of two independent data sources.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The notified incidence of meningococcal disease in European countries varies from <1 case per 100,000 inhabitants to approximately 7 cases per 100,000. Assessing the true burden of disease is important for setting priorities in health services and for estimating the benefit of interventions such as vaccination. Completeness and timeliness of reporting is also essential for the early recognition of outbreaks. The objective of this study was to assess the completeness of surveillance data on invasive meningococcal disease in Austria at the National Reference Center for Meningoc

[Estimation of the epidemiological impact of various BCG vaccination scenarios in France].

BACKGROUND: Within the current process of revising the vaccination policy against tuberculosis in France, we have estimated the epidemiological impact of three future possible options for BCG primo-vaccination: continuation of routine vaccination of all children, targeting on high risk children or discontinuation. METHODS: We have used tuberculosis mandatory notification data to estimate the number of cases currently prevented each year through BCG vaccination, corresponding to the excess incidence, in case of discontinuation of the vaccination. The proportion of cases occurring in high risk

Brainwashing and battering fatigue. Psychological abuse in domestic violence.

Intimate partner violence occurs often in the United States; it involves an interrelated combination of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, usually directed against women. The psychological aspect deserves special attention because victims who lose their independence, self-esteem, and dignity tend to remain in abusive situations. The abuse is perpetrated by a domestic partner to maintain power and control in the relationship. To assert control, the abuser uses "brainwashing tactics" similar to those used on prisoners of war, hostages, or members of a cult. Common features of brainwashin
