Pregnancy and advanced maternal age-The associations between regular exercise and maternal and newborn health variables.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the associations between delayed childbearing and poorer maternal and perinatal outcomes, little is known about these issues in regular exercisers and in women with healthy lifestyles. The aims of the present study were to: (a) compare lifestyle variables and exercise, pregnancy and birth outcomes in women ≥35 years and women <35 years of age, and (b) investigate the associations between regular exercise and maternal health and newborn variables in women of advanced maternal age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Healthy pregnant women (≥35 years, n = 104 and <35 years, n = 362) wer…

Maternal hemoglobin concentrations across pregnancy and maternal and child health: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Maternal anemia is a well-recognized global health problem; however, there remain questions on specific hemoglobin (Hb) thresholds that predict health risk or protection for mother and child. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the associations of maternal Hb concentrations with a range of maternal and infant health outcomes, accounting for the timing of measurement (preconception, and first, second, and third trimesters), etiology of anemia, and cutoff category. The systematic review included 272 studies and the meta-analysis included 95 studies. Low maternal Hb (<11

Adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in adolescent pregnancies: The Global Network's Maternal Newborn Health Registry study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls between 15 and 19 years give birth to around 16 million babies each year, around 11% of births worldwide. We sought to determine whether adolescent mothers are at higher risk of maternal and perinatal adverse outcomes compared with mothers aged 20-24 years in a prospective, population-based observational study of newborn outcomes in low resource settings. METHODS: We undertook a prospective, population-based multi-country research study of all pregnant women in defined geographic areas across 7 sites in six low-middle income countries (Kenya, Zambia, India, Pakist

Maternal health in women with spina bifida: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of women with spina bifida are reaching reproductive age and may consider pregnancy. However, limited evidence on how spina bifida affects maternal health can hinder tailored counseling and guidance, contributing to uncertainty during pregnancy-related decision-making. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to synthesize existing literature on maternal health among women with spina bifida, focusing on pregnancy and childbirth outcomes, women's health-related outcomes, care needs, and health-related decision-making across pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting cont…

Familial confounding in the associations between maternal health and autism.

Evidence suggests that maternal health in pregnancy is associated with autism in the offspring. However, most diagnoses in pregnant women have not been examined, and the role of familial confounding remains unknown. Our cohort included all children born in Denmark between 1998 and 2015 (n = 1,131,899) and their parents. We fitted Cox proportional hazard regression models to estimate the likelihood of autism associated with each maternal prenatal ICD-10 diagnosis, accounting for disease chronicity and comorbidity, familial correlations and sociodemographic factors. We examined the evidence for …

The Effects of Vegan Diet on Fetus and Maternal Health: A Review.

Veganism, a way of eating that forbids goods produced from animals, is rising in acceptance around the globe. This thorough analysis investigates how a vegan diet affects fetal growth during pregnancy, highlighting the need to maintain ideal maternal nutrition. The idea of "early life programming" emphasizes how a pregnant woman's lifestyle impacts her unborn child's health. Nutrient consumption during pregnancy makes it essential to have a healthy eating routine. While a carefully thought-out vegan diet may contain all the essential nutrients, some micronutrients need special attention, which

Women's mental health in Mozambique: is maternity a protective factor?

BACKGROUD: Globally, women have been shown to have high rates of common mental disorders (CMDs). In low and middle-income countries (LMICs), women face significant challenges related to maternity. However, no study has compared mental health problems among pregnant/post-partum women, childless women of childbearing age, and women with children in a low-income country. We sought to compare the frequency of CMD and suicide risk in a sample of women presenting or accompanying patients in primary care in two Mozambican semi-urban settings. METHODS: We administered the MINI International Neuropsyc

Impact of vitamin D on maternal and fetal health: A review.

The role of vitamin D in improving maternal health and reducing the risk of developmental disorders in fetus has been an important domain of research since the past few years. Vitamin D, owing to its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, developmental roles, and regulating calcium homeostasis, is predicted to have a significant influence on maternal and fetal health status. Several observational studies and clinical trials, determining the impact of vitamin D on gestational diabetes, C-section, postpartum depression, pre-eclampsia, miscarriages, and preterm delivery, have been elaborated in thi…

Maternal BCG primes for enhanced health benefits in the newborn.

OBJECTIVES: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination lowers the risk of severe infection; we tested whether effects are modulated by maternal BCG in a large cohort of BCG-vaccinated newborns from Guinea-Bissau. METHODS: Maternal BCG scar status were inspected at enrolment in a BCG trial conducted from 2014 to 17 in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. We tested associations with background factors for potential confounding; maternal age affected effect estimates >5% and accordingly, all analyses were adjusted for maternal age. Hospitalization data was collected prospectively and assessed in Cox-models pro

The status of maternal and newborn health care services in Zanzibar.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 287,000 women worldwide die annually from pregnancy and childbirth-related conditions, and 6.9 million under-five children die each year, of which about 3 million are newborns. Most of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The maternal health situation in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar is similar to other sub-Saharan countries. This study assessed the availability, accessibility and quality of emergency obstetric care services and essential resources available for maternal and child health services in Zanzibar. METHODS: From October and November 2012, a cr…

Smoking and adverse maternal and child health outcomes in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies from high-income countries document the causal relationship between cigarette smoking during pregnancy and adverse maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes. Less research has been conducted in low and middle income countries, but a burgeoning literature can be found for Brazil. METHODS: We review Brazilian studies of the prevalence of maternal smoking, the relative risk of smoking-attributable adverse MCH outcomes, and present new estimates for these outcomes, using the attributable fraction method. RESULTS: We found that Brazilian studies of the relative risks

Effects of birth spacing on maternal health: a systematic review.

The objective of the study was to explore the association between birth spacing and risk of adverse maternal outcomes. The study was a systematic review of observational studies that examined the relationship between interpregnancy or birth intervals and adverse maternal outcomes. Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. Overall, long interpregnancy intervals, possibly longer than 5 years, are independently associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia. There is emerging evidence that women with long interpregnancy intervals are at increased risk for labor dystocia and that short int

Impact of fetal-maternal microchimerism on women's health--a review.

Microchimerism is defined by the presence of circulating cells, bi-directionally transferred from one genetically distinct individual to another. It occurs either physiologically during pregnancy, or iatrogenically after blood transfusion and organ transplants. The migrated cells may persist for decades. Much controversy exists around the role of microchimeric cells in the pathogenesis of various diseases and around their role in tissue repair. Microchimerism has been investigated in different autoimmune disorders, such as systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, autoimmune thyroid di

[Evidence of the impact of vitamin A supplementation on maternal and child health].

The aim of this article was to collect the results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses that evaluated the effect of vitamin A supplementation on child growth and maternal, fetal, and child morbidity and mortality. A detailed search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane Library, LILACS, PAHO, CAPES, USP Digital Thesis Library, and UNIFESP Collection Database. A total of 14 studies published from 1993 to 2006 were included in the review. There is evidence that vitamin A supplementation in children is associated with a reduction of 23% to 30% in mortality risk and attenuation in the severity of m
