[Maternal mortality by stroke in France 2013-2015].

Between 2013 and 2015, 20 maternal deaths were associated with stroke. Stroke was the main cause of death in 16 cases (12 hemorrhagic strokes [75%], 1 ischemic stroke and three cerebral thrombophlebitis). In the four other cases, the stroke was a complication of another pathology. The 16 deaths directly related to stroke account for 5.7% of all maternal deaths (maternal mortality ratio of 0.7/100,000 live births vs. 0.9/100,000 over the period 2010-2012, NS). Stroke occurred during pregnancy in 8 cases (50%). Three patients died without giving birth and the 5 others gave birth by emergency cae…

Contextual determinants of maternal mortality in rural Pakistan.

Maternal mortality is high in Pakistan, particularly in the rural areas which have poor access to health services. We investigated the risk factors associated with maternal mortality in sixteen rural districts of Balochistan and the North-West Frontier (NWFP) provinces of Pakistan. We designed a nested case-control study comprising 261 cases (maternal deaths reported during last five years) and 9135 controls (women who survived a pregnancy during last five years). Using contextual analysis, we estimated the interactions between the biological risk factors of maternal mortality and the district…

Maternal mortality after cesarean section in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: To assess cesarean section-related maternal mortality in The Netherlands during 1983-1992. METHODS: A nationwide confidential enquiry into the causes of maternal death. RESULTS: The risk of dying after vaginal birth was 0.04 per 1000 vaginal births (65/1.763.999) compared to 0.53 per 1000 cesarean births (57/108.587). The direct risk of dying from cesarean section was 0.13 per 1000 operations (14/108.587). In some women cesarean section did not initiate, but contributed to, the train of events leading to death. Adding this associated risk to the direct risk gives a fatality rate …
