Spreading properties of a city-road reaction-diffusion model on one-dimensional lattice.

We propose and study a new model to describe biological invasions constrained on infinite homogeneous one dimensional metric graphs. Our model consists of an infinite PDE-ODE system where, at each vertex of the one-dimensional lattice Z , we have a logistic equation, and connections between vertices are given by diffusion equations on the edges supplemented with Robin like boundary conditions at the vertices. We establish the main properties of the system and study the long time behavior of the solutions, especially by characterizing an asymptotic spreading speed for the system. In the fast di

Genome rearrangements as double coset Markov chains.

Permutation groups provide a natural framework for modeling genomes and their rearrangement events, which is crucial for understanding evolutionary relationships. Double cosets can be used to model objects arising from multiple symmetries, such as circular genomes with repeated genes. Suppose λ = ( λ 1 , λ 2 , ⋯ , λ k ) is a partition of n which indicates the number of repeated regions or genes of different types ( λ i of type i with n total regions). A circular genome with n oriented regions determined by λ can be identified with the double coset space S λ \ B n / D n , whe

Stochastic Chiral Pharmacokinetics: Dynamics with Dual Randomized Dosing Regimens.

Medication non-adherence is recognized as a critical determinant of therapeutic efficacy and safety. However, its specific impact on the concentration fluctuations of chiral drugs remains poorly understood. By incorporating dual stochasticity in dosing intervals and dosages, we developed a stochastic pharmacokinetic model for chiral drugs comprising bio-active and bio-inactive enantiomers under multiple intravenous bolus administrations. Utilizing characteristic functions and second-type Volterra integral equations, we derived explicit expressions for the expectation and variance of both the a

Sterile Insect Technique in a n-patch System with Allee Effect and Mass Trapping: Modelling, Analysis and Simulations.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a biological control method aimed at reducing or eliminating populations of pests and disease vectors. This technique involves releasing sterilised insects which, by mating with wild individuals, will reduce the target population. In this study, spatial aspects are incorporated through an explicit metapopulation model, in which both wild and sterile insects disperse across multiple patches. We derive a general sufficient condition ensuring elimination of the wild population in all patches through SIT. When a strong Allee effect is naturally present in each

Multiple Disease-Free Equilibria: Toward a Vector Structure of R 0.

Traditional epidemiological models rely on the basic reproductive number, R 0 , as a single threshold quantity to determine whether a disease will persist or die out. However, increased structural complexity in models can lead to the emergence of multiple disease-free equilibria (DFEs). To illustrate this dynamic diversity, we analyze a compartmental model based on the Health Belief Model, where risk perception, social imitation, and behavioral fatigue among susceptible individuals generate the coexistence of multiple DFEs. This case study exposes the limitations of a single scalar threshold

wStri spread dynamics in Nilaparvata lugens via discrete mathematical models.

Wolbachia, an intracellular bacterium, is well-known for inducing cytoplasmic incompatibility, which has become a promising and environmentally sustainable strategy for controlling pest populations. The strain wStri, specifically identified in Nilaparvata lugens (brown planthopper), has shown potential for such biocontrol applications. In this study, we develop a comprehensive discrete mathematical model to analyze the dynamics of wStri spread in a mixed population of wStri-infected, wLug-infected, and uninfected Nilaparvata lugens under both constant and periodically varying environmental con

Mathematical study of the spread and blocking in inflammatory bowel disease.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with mechanisms that are still partially unclear. Unlike other types of IBD, inflammation in UC is limited to the inner lining of the large intestine and rectum, spreading continuously without breaks between affected areas, creating a uniform pattern of inflammation along the colon. In this paper, we develop a mathematical model based on a reaction-diffusion system to describe the inflammation caused by the interaction between a pathogen and immune cells in the context of UC. Our contributions are both theoretical and numeri

Modeling Innate Immunity Causing Chronic Inflammation and Tissue Damage.

Mathematical models of immune responses have traditionally focused on adaptive immunity and pathogen-immune dynamics. However, recent advances in immunology have highlighted the critical role of innate immunity. In response to physical damage or pathogen attacks, innate immune cells circulating throughout the body rapidly migrate from blood vessels and accumulate at the site of injury, triggering inflammation. These cells engulf, break down, and eliminate pathogens. This innate immune response occurs much faster than adaptive immune responses, which require time for cell activation and prolife

Direct intracranial recordings in the human angular gyrus during arithmetic processing.

The role of angular gyrus (AG) in arithmetic processing remains a subject of debate. In the present study, we recorded from the AG, supramarginal gyrus (SMG), intraparietal sulcus (IPS), and superior parietal lobule (SPL) across 467 sites in 30 subjects performing addition or multiplication with digits or number words. We measured the power of high-frequency-broadband (HFB) signal, a surrogate marker for regional cortical engagement, and used single-subject anatomical boundaries to define the location of each recording site. Our recordings revealed the lowest proportion of sites with activatio

Exposure to stereotype-relevant stories shapes children's implicit gender stereotypes.

Implicit math = male stereotypes have been found in early childhood and are linked to girls' disproportionate disengagement from math-related activities and later careers. Yet, little is known about how malleable children's automatic stereotypes are, especially in response to brief interventions. In a sample of 336 six- to eleven-year-olds, we experimentally tested whether exposure to a brief story vignette intervention with either stereotypical, neutral, or counter-stereotypical content (three conditions: math = boy vs. neutral vs. math = girl) could change implicit math-gender stereotypes. Neural underpinnings of numerical and spatial cognition: An fMRI meta-analysis of brain regions associated with symbolic number, arithmetic, and mental rotation.

Where and under what conditions do spatial and numerical skills converge and diverge in the brain? To address this question, we conducted a meta-analysis of brain regions associated with basic symbolic number processing, arithmetic, and mental rotation. We used Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) to construct quantitative meta-analytic maps synthesizing results from 83 neuroimaging papers (24-31 studies/cognitive process). All three cognitive processes were found to activate bilateral parietal regions in and around the intraparietal sulcus (IPS); a finding consistent with shared processing

A Parameter Estimation Method for Multiscale Models of Hepatitis C Virus Dynamics.

Mathematical models that are based on differential equations require detailed knowledge about the parameters that are included in the equations. Some of the parameters can be measured experimentally while others need to be estimated. When the models become more sophisticated, such as in the case of multiscale models of hepatitis C virus dynamics that deal with partial differential equations (PDEs), several strategies can be tried. It is possible to use parameter estimation on an analytical approximation of the solution to the multiscale model equations, namely the long-term approximation, but

Recent is more: A negative time-order effect in nonsymbolic numerical judgment.

Humans as well as some nonhuman animals can estimate object numerosities-such as the number of sheep in a flock-without explicit counting. Here, we report on a negative time-order effect (TOE) in this type of judgment: When nonsymbolic numerical stimuli are presented sequentially, the second stimulus is overestimated compared to the first. We examined this "recent is more" effect in two comparative judgment tasks: larger-smaller discrimination and same-different discrimination. Ideal-observer modeling revealed evidence for a TOE in 88.2% of the individual data sets. Despite large individual di

Zoonotic Transmission of Waterborne Disease: A Mathematical Model.

Waterborne parasites that infect both humans and animals are common causes of diarrhoeal illness, but the relative importance of transmission between humans and animals and vice versa remains poorly understood. Transmission of infection from animals to humans via environmental reservoirs, such as water sources, has attracted attention as a potential source of endemic and epidemic infections, but existing mathematical models of waterborne disease transmission have limitations for studying this phenomenon, as they only consider contamination of environmental reservoirs by humans. This paper deve

The functional anatomy of single-digit arithmetic in children with developmental dyslexia.

Some arithmetic procedures, such as addition of small numbers, rely on fact retrieval mechanisms supported by left hemisphere perisylvian language areas, while others, such as subtraction, rely on procedural-based mechanisms subserved by bilateral parietal cortices. Previous work suggests that developmental dyslexia, a reading disability, is accompanied by subtle deficits in retrieval-based arithmetic, possibly because of compromised left hemisphere function. To test this prediction, we compared brain activity underlying arithmetic problem solving in children with and without dyslexia during a

A Transcritical Bifurcation at Infinity Governs Plaque Stability in a Lipid-Structured Macrophage Model of Atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerotic plaques are fatty deposits in arterial walls and a major cause of heart attacks and strokes. Macrophage proliferation triggers plaque growth and instability, but the specific conditions that convert stable plaques into unstable ones remain unclear. To provide insight into the conditions for this transition, we apply bifurcation analysis to the lipid-structured atherosclerosis model proposed by Chambers et al. (Bull Math Biol 86(8):104, 2024). We demonstrate that, in the asymptotic regime where macrophage levels become large ( M → ∞ ), the model exhibits an asymptotic fast-slow

Why is it easier to predict the epidemic curve than to reconstruct the underlying contact network?

We study the deterministic Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) epidemic model on weighted graphs. van Mieghem et al. have shown that it is possible to learn an estimated network from a finite time sample of the trajectories of the dynamics that in turn can give an accurate prediction beyond the sample time range, even though the estimated network might be qualitatively far from the ground truth. We give a mathematically rigorous derivation for this phenomenon, notably that for large networks, prediction of the epidemic curves is robust, while reconstructing the underlying network is ill-con

Generalizing Matrix Representations to Fully Heterochronous Ranked Tree Shapes.

Phylogenetic tree shapes capture fundamental signatures of evolution. We consider "ranked" tree shapes, which are equipped with a total order on the internal nodes compatible with the tree graph. Recent work has established an elegant bijection between ranked tree shapes and a class of integer matrices, called F-matrices, defined by simple inequalities. This formulation is for isochronous ranked tree shapes, where all leaves share the same sampling time, such as in the study of ancient human demography from present-day individuals. However, branch lengths of phylogenetic trees can represent un

Methods for Analyzing RNA Pseudoknots via Chord Diagrams and Intersection Graphs.

RNA molecules are known to form complex secondary structures including pseudoknots. A systematic framework for the enumeration, classification and prediction of secondary structures is critical to determine the biological significance of the molecular configurations of RNA. Chord diagrams are mathematical objects widely used to represent RNA secondary structures and to analyze structural motifs, however a mathematically rigorous enumeration of pseudoknots remains a challenge. We introduce a method that incorporates a distance-based metric τ to analyze the intersection graph of a chord diagram

Disease extinction in finite time for a continuous-time SIRS model.

This paper addresses the problem of controlling the spread of an epidemic through a multiplicatively controlled SIRS model, in which the control input modulates the infection rate in a bilinear manner. Classical approaches based on asymptotic stability only guarantee disease eradication as time tends to infinity, which may be inadequate for timely and effective intervention. To overcome this limitation, we investigate the finite-time behavior of the infected population, ensuring its convergence to zero either in finite time (FTS) or within a fixed time independent of the initial conditions (Fx
