This case report presents the camouflage treatment that successfully improved the facial profile of a patient with a skeletal Class III malocclusion using bone-borne rapid maxillary expansion and mandibular anterior subapical osteotomy. The patient was an 18-year-old woman with chief complaints of crooked teeth and a protruded jaw. Camouflage treatment was chosen because she rejected orthognathic surgery under general anesthesia. A hybrid type of bone-borne rapid maxillary expander with palatal mini-implants was used to correct the transverse discrepancy, and a mandibular anterior subapical os

A 17-year-old girl with a Class III occlusion and facial asymmetry was treated with orthodontics and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO). She had a severe skeletal Class III relationship (Wits, -17 mm). Even though she had a prognathic mandible, she showed a straight rather than concave profile because of severe mandibular dental compensation. The patient also had severe mandibular deviation. After 17 months of presurgical orthodontic treatment, IVRO was performed. Total active treatment time was 26 months. Both occlusion and facial appearance were significantly improved by the surgical-

The incidence of serious haemorrhage in Le Fort I osteotomy is low and attempts to reduce this further have led to the development of various techniques to minimise vascular injury. This includes the tuberosity osteotomy and was published over two decades ago. This technique has not been widely adopted as shown by a recent UK survey of consultants, which suggested that only 12 (7%) of the 175 surgeons who responded, routinely use tuberosity osteotomy in non-cleft low level Le Fort I procedures. The aim of the study was to examine prospectively the incidence of serious haemorrhage from the post

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated changes in nasal airway function following Le Fort I osteotomy with maxillary impaction according to the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale.
METHODS: This cohort study included 13 patients who underwent Le Fort I osteotomy with maxillary impaction. Nasal airway function was evaluated based on the NOSE scale preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively. The change in the NOSE score was calculated as the preoperative score minus the postoperative score. If the normality assumptions for changes in the NOSE score were not met, a nonparametric test

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensionally (3D) designed osteotomies and customised osteosynthesis are rapidly becoming standard in maxillofacial reconstructive and deformity surgery. Patient-specific implants (PSIs) have been in use for a few years in orthognathic surgery as well. In Le Fort I osteotomy, wafer-free fixation of the maxillary segment can be performed by individually manufactured cutting and drill guides together with PSIs.
AIM: This retrospective study was performed to compare the postoperative skeletal stability of the maxillary segment fixed by patient-specific implants versus mini-pla

The purpose of this study was to investigate how sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and Le Fort 1 osteotomy affected the stress distribution of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) during an anterior teeth bite using the three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) method. Fourteen orthognathic surgery patients were examined with mandibular prognathism, facial asymmetry, and mandibular retraction. They underwent Le Fort 1 osteotomy in conjunction with SSRO. In addition, ten asymptomatic subjects were recruited as the control group. The 3D models of the mandible, disc, and maxilla were reconstruc

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical feasibility of preventing tooth injury from anterior maxillary interdental osteotomy by using a surgical navigation technique. A retrospective review was conducted on cleft lip and palate patients treated with anterior maxillary osteotomy followed by distraction osteogenesis between August 2019 and May 2022. Patients operated on through image guidance were enrolled in the navigation group, while those who were operated on freehand were enrolled in the freehand group. Tooth injuries were identified on postoperative images. Linear and angular

The iliac crest bone can be used in many situations in the maxillofacial area. The corticocancellous bone blocks provide a lot of bone material, which can be shaped to the proper contour, volume, and bent to the desired position. Most commonly, syndromic cases are treated with the use of such bone blocks. In some special situations and unusual cases, when maxillary downgrafting with extrusion and advancement exceeds 5 mm, an increased bone gap is present. To promote good bone healing, achieve proper union, and maintain stable bone position with occlusion, the grafted bone material should be po

In patients with severe atrophy of the posterior maxilla requiring lateral maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE), the window location and size are commonly designed according to the future implants and anatomical conditions. A window osteotomy becomes challenging when there is an extended edentulous space in the maxilla with no reference from the natural dentition, or when the surgical site involves anatomical variations, for example in the course of a large vessel or a sinus septum. Through preoperative planning and real-time visualization, the application of dynamic navigation allows an acc

BACKGROUND: The sandwich osteotomy technique usually requires high surgical skills and prolonged intraoperative time and had some technical drawbacks with a subsequent deficient amount of vertical bone gain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the final vertical bone gain using sandwich osteotomy with simultaneous versus delayed implant placement in the anterior maxilla.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 16 patients having multiple missing maxillary anterior teeth with a vertically deficient alveolar ridge. Patients were randomly assigned into two equal groups. Both groups were trea
