BACKGROUND: Mental diseases occur particularly frequently between the ages of 12 and 25 years, with important implications for the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment.
OBJECTIVE: Against this background this article outlines a youth mental health paradigm which prioritizes the early detection, early intervention and prevention of mental disorders, e.g., psychoses, bipolar disorders and personality disorders in adolescence.

OBJECTIVES: Mentalizing is a crucial factor in understanding antisocial behavior. The current study focuses on mapping mentalization within a population of patients with antisocial behavior (n = 108) and compares trait and state mentalizing.
METHODS: Three instruments were used to assess mentalizing abilities: the Reflective Functioning Scale, an emotion recognition task, and a Virtual Reality experiment. Mentalizing profiles were determined with latent class analyses and subsequently examined their relations.
RESULTS: Patients with antisocial behavior exhibited poor mentalizing capacities. …

BACKGROUND: Mentalizing, making sense of mental states, is hypothesized to have a central role in self-organization and social learning. Findings support this notion, but the extent of the association between mentalizing and various correlates has not been meta-analyzed. Furthermore, mentalizing presumably occurs with (explicit) and without (implicit) awareness but few studies have attempted to disentangle these aspects. We conducted a meta-analysis of implicit and explicit mentalizing in relation to the domains of attachment security, personality, affect, psychopathology, and functioning.

Mental health professionals stigmatize mental illness, which has significant ramifications for public health and policy. Within this domain, there is a lack of comprehensive research on relative stigma, emotions, and behaviors and an absence of literature that can guide research on these topics. The current study sought to address these limitations. Unstructured interviews were conducted with 22 mental health professionals, and data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. The current study identified a collection of mental disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder), stereotypes

Homeless persons with mental illness (HPMI) suffer indignities due to shirking of all obligations by the society. In addition, the HPMI is denied all rights available to citizens, such as confidentiality, privacy, safety, right to practice religion, health, and the right to not suffer from inhuman treatment. In this context, the new Mental Healthcare Act (MHCA), 2017 has brought in a list of rights for HPMI, and this is a welcome sign. The MHCA has also taken away the mandated involvement of judiciary to provide care for the HPMI. However, the ground realities in terms of the systems and the e

During the past century, the scope of mental health intervention in North America has gradually expanded from an initial focus on hospitalized patients with psychoses to outpatients with neurotic disorders, including the so-called worried well. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), Fifth Edition, is further embracing the concept of a mental illness spectrum, such that increasing attention to the softer end of the continuum can be expected in the future. This anticipated shift rekindles important questions about how mental illness is defined, how to distinguish betwee

Autism is not a mental health disorder, but it sometimes is misdiagnosed as one--and can bring its own mental health issues. Dr Judith Gould explains how a mental health problem may mask an undiagnosed autistic spectrum disorder.

UNLABELLED: In mentally retarded persons the same psychiatric disorders may be recognized as in general population. Mental retardation is a predisposing factor to appearance of different kinds of psychiatric disorders. Taking into account the fact that mentally retarded persons have weaker defense mechanisms and more often suffer from psychiatric disorders it seems to be interesting what reasons determine psychiatric hospitalizations in population of mentally retarded patients.
THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Analysis of mental disorders determining psychiatric hospitalizations in mentally retarded pat

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders can impact parenting negatively, thus placing their children at risk of adversity. The current service support for parents in adult mental health (AMHS) service is limited. The objective of this randomized clinical trial will be to evaluate the effects of a transdiagnostic mentalization-based parenting program (Lighthouse MBT Parenting Program) versus care as usual (CAU) for parents with mental disorders in AMHS in Denmark.
METHODS: This trial is designed as an investigator-initiated single-center open-label randomized clinical superiority trial of the Lighthouse …

This Review summarises the research into five common mental health problems that can affect adults living with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or gestational diabetes: fear of hypoglycaemia, diabetes distress, depression, disordered eating, and sleep disorders. Mental health problems are common among adults with diabetes and can substantially decrease the quality of life and self-care, and increase the risk of adverse health outcomes, such as high HbA1c, comorbidities, and premature mortality. Many mental health problems are bi-directionally linked to diabetes. Randomised controlled trials h
