Physical Therapy and Mental Health: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Coexistence of mental and physical health conditions is prevalent. To achieve optimal physical therapy outcomes, neither should be treated in isolation. This review aimed to map intersections between physical therapy and mental health. METHODS: This was a scoping review searching MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Cochrane, and PEDro databases. Two independent researchers screened studies of physical therapy practice with adolescents/adults with mental health disorders or research using primary mental health outcomes in physical health conditions or clinicians' perspective. Data were extr

Interventions to address the mental health of adolescents and young adults living with or affected by HIV: state of the evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young adults (AYA) remain vulnerable to HIV-infection and significant co-morbid mental health challenges that are barriers to treatment and prevention efforts. Globally millions of AYA are living with HIV (AYALH) and/or have been affected by HIV in their families (AYAAH), with studies highlighting the need for mental health programmes. With no current guidelines for delivering mental health interventions for AYALH or AYAAH, a scoping review was undertaken to explore current evidence-based mental health interventions for AYALH and AYAAH to inform future work. Assessing the applicability of e-therapies for depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders among lesbians and gay men: analysis of 24 web- and mobile phone-based self-help interventions.

BACKGROUND: Lesbians and gay men have disproportionately high rates of depression and anxiety, and report lower satisfaction with treatments. In part, this may be because many health care options marginalize them by assuming heterosexuality, or misunderstand and fail to respond to the challenges specifically faced by these groups. E-therapies have particular potential to respond to the mental health needs of lesbians and gay men, but there is little research to determine whether they do so, or how they might be improved. OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine the applicability of existing mental hea

Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Layperson Support: A mixed-Methods Evaluation of Empower@Home.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates Empower@Home, an older adult-centered, layperson-supported internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) program for depression using a concurrent mixed-methods design. METHODS: Adults aged 50+ with at least mild depressive symptoms enrolled in the program and were assessed pre- and post-treatment (N = 224). A subset participated in qualitative interviews post-treatment (N = 148). Paired t-tests and mixed-effects modeling assessed quantitative program effects, while qualitative data identified key themes of impact. RESULTS: Program completion was 90%. De

Measures for intersectional mental healthcare: results from a participatory interview and focus group study with psychosocial counsellors, people with experience of using mental health services and providers.

BACKGROUND: Discriminatory practices and barriers to care are increasingly recognised as a significant challenge for mental healthcare institutions. Yet, little research has considered what measures people with experience of using mental health services and mental healthcare service providers recommend to implement anti-discrimination within mental healthcare. AIMS: This study aims to explore the perspectives and recommendations of marginalised people with experience of using mental health services, mental healthcare service providers and psychosocial counsellors, to inform more equitable men

The development of a creative work rehabilitation organisation.

Work as therapy has a place in mental healthcare, but there is disagreement about how and why it might be helpful, and how best to conceptualise or represent those benefits. Over the last 50 years, occupational and industrial therapy sheltered workshops have been key elements in the provision of work activities in psychiatric settings, and community-based horticultural activities and creative craft work have offered additional approaches. Using archival material, interviews, witness seminars and personal reflections, this article charts the birth and initial growth of Restore, a charity provid

Dissemination of evidence-based practices for anxiety disorders in Wyoming: a survey of practicing psychotherapists.

Despite the well-established effectiveness of exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of anxiety disorders, therapists have been slow to adopt CBT into their clinical practice. The present study was conducted to examine the utilization of psychotherapy techniques for anxiety disorders among community practitioners in a rural setting in order to determine the current status of the dissemination of CBT. A sample of 51 licensed psychotherapists from various mental health professions was recruited from online practice listings in the state of Wyoming. Participants comple

'An Embodied Journey Towards Recovery': A Grounded Theory of Mental Health Service Users' Experiences of a Nature-based Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Nature-based interventions (NBIs) have been identified to support a recovery-oriented approach for people experiencing mental health issues. However, there is still limited knowledge related to how mental health service users experience their recovery process when engaged in NBIs. AIM: To explore and explain how mental health service users experience the process of personal recovery from participating in a newly developed NBI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted using constructivist grounded theory and included 20 participants. The NBI, including equine-assisted therap

[Sleep disorders and mental health].

Sleep disorders occur in almost one out of three people and are therefore among the most common disorders that physicians encounter in their practice. They often also present in the context of mental disorders. While it was previously assumed that they were merely a symptom of mental illness, current literature emphasizes the bidirectional connection between sleep and mental disorders. Even in the most common sleep disorders, namely sleep-related breathing disorders, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome / periodic limb movement disorder, reciprocal and sometimes complex interactions between sl

Applications of schema therapy in young people: a systematic review.

Adolescents and young adults are increasingly susceptible to developing mental health conditions, but many young people do not respond well to the current evidence-based treatments. Schema therapy has been effective in adults with mental health conditions, and research suggests it holds promise in adolescents with chronic or treatment-resistant mental health conditions. Our systematic review searched for articles that applied schema therapy in people aged between 12 and 30. Databases searched using the EBSCOHost platform included PubMed MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Li

Health Policy Perspectives-Realizing the Potential of Occupational Therapy in Supporting Postsecondary Student Mental Health and Success.

Postsecondary institutions around the world are grappling with how best to respond to what is described as a crisis in student mental health, with urgent calls for evidence-based advocacy, campaigning, and global action. In response to this call to action, in this article we advocate for a stronger role for occupational therapy in supporting student mental health in postsecondary settings through the enactment of the Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting University and Colleges, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2025. We share examples of innovative occupation

Taking a PAWS to Reflect on How the Work of a Therapy Dog Supports a Trauma-Informed Approach to Prisoner Health.

Canada's Correctional Investigator has found that mental health disorders, alone or in combination with alcohol and drug abuse, challenge public health and safety. Trauma is a key contributor among Canada's inmate population. Therapy dogs can assist in supporting individuals with mental health, addiction, and trauma concerns. This case report presents the work of a St. John Ambulance therapy dog in a trauma-informed approach to prisoner health. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration articulates six evidence-based trauma principles for service providers; safety; trustwort

When the war never ends: conceptual limitations, contextual differences and implications for interventions in continuous traumatic stress in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Considerable knowledge has been generated on the symptoms, course, therapy, and care of survivors of traumatic experiences since posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition (DSM-III) in 1980. Notwithstanding this improved understanding, there is still disagreement over the definition, characteristics, and expression of PTSD in various settings. The aim of this paper was to offer a perspective on the limitations of the current conceptualization of mental health problems associated with continuous traumatic stress (CT

Benefits of Digital Mental Health Care Interventions for Correctional Workers and Other Public Safety Personnel: A Narrative Review.

Chronic exposure to stressors and potentially psychologically traumatic events contributes to the high prevalence of mental health disorders in correctional workers (CWs) and other public safety personnel (PSP). Digital mental health interventions are an accessible and scalable method of improving and maintaining the mental health of this population. The current review explores the benefits of digital mental health interventions for PSP-with a focus on CWs-and how these innovations can address the limitations in in-person mental health care. A systematic literature search of five databases (Me

Day Hospital Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT-DH) versus treatment as usual in the treatment of severe borderline personality disorder: protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Severe borderline personality disorder is associated with a very high psychosocial and economic burden. Current treatment guidelines suggest that several manualized treatments, including day hospital Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT-DH), are effective in these patients. However, only two randomized controlled trials have compared manualized MBT-DH with treatment as usual. Given the relative paucity of data supporting the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of MBT-DH, the possible influence of researcher allegiance in one of the trials, and potential problems with the generalization o
