Emotional schemas and metacognitive beliefs in anxiety and depression: A network approach.

Anxiety and depression are prevalent and comorbid, and transdiagnostic models highlight emotional schemas and metacognitive beliefs as relevant to emotional distress. However, little is known about their interplay within a network or whether centrality differs by symptom severity. Treatment-seeking adults (N = 1459; Mage = 34.98; 62% female) completed the LESS-II, MCQ-30, BDI, and BAI. Networks were estimated using Gaussian graphical models with EBICglasso regularization. Centrality indices were examined, and networks were compared between participants with clinically significant symptom level

Metacognitive therapy in post-traumatic stress disorder: A meta- analysis.

The metacognitive model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) proposes that the natural emotional processing following a traumatic event may be impaired due to the negative effects (thoughts and emotions) related to the trauma and its memory. Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) is increasingly being used as a treatment for PTSD. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the effectiveness of MCT clinical outcomes in treating PTSD over the past two decades. In this meta-analysis, we analyzed experimental studies published between January 2000 and October 2022, in which MCT was administered to young and adu

Emotion dysregulation in participants with substance use disorders: A metacognitive perspective.

BACKGROUND: Using the metacognitive model of emotion dysregulation as a basis, this study explored whether, among participants with substance use disorders (SUDs), metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking were associated with emotion dysregulation. METHODS: 127 participants with SUDs and 127 controls without SUDs were recruited. Emotion dysregulation, metacognitive beliefs, rumination, worry, anxiety, and depression were assessed. t-tests, Mann-Whitney tests, logistic regression, correlation, and hierarchal regression analyses were run. RESULTS: Participants with SUDs reported

Gambling-specific metacognitions, depression, and responsible gambling in Macao, China.

The Self-regulatory Executive Function model elucidates how metacognitions link to the development and maintenance of gambling disorder, however whether, and how, metacognitions explain responsible gambling remains unknown. This study is the first to address this knowledge gap by: (a) examining whether both generic and gambling-specific metacognitions explain variances in responsible gambling; and (b) testing the mediating role of depression between generic/gambling-specific metacognitions and responsible gambling. A two-stage cluster random sampling method was used to obtain a probability sam…

Blindness of intentions and metacognitive deficits during moral judgements in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that moral judgments are affected by social cognitive abilities, such as theory of mind (ToM). This … pressed intentions to hurt another person significantly more harshly than in an accident situation. Metacognition measures show that paranoid schizophrenia patients make moral judgments with high confidence, despite being based on an incorrect reading of the other person's intentions. CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that ToM has a significant impact on the mo …

Metacognitions and brooding predict depressive symptoms in a community adolescent sample.

Depressive symptoms are prevalent in adolescence, and girls have higher levels of depressive symptoms and depressive disorder than boys. Rumination and especially brooding, seem to be a central maintaining factor of depressive symptoms, where metacognitions about rumination play a prominent role in maintaining depressive rumination. There is a sex difference in adults in depressive disorder. The current investigation of a high school / community sample of adolescents aged 16-20 from Norway (N = 1198, 62.2% women) found that adolescent women had higher scores than men on all relevant measures: …

Social anxiety and Internet gaming disorder: The role of motives and metacognitions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In recent years, Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) has been recognized as a mental health problem. Although research has found that social anxiety, motives, the preference for online social interactions (POSI), and metacognitions about online gaming are independent predictors of IGD, less is known about their relative contribution to IGD. The aim of the current study was to model the relationship between social anxiety, motives, POSI, metacognitions about online gaming, and IGD. METHODS: Five hundred and forty three Italian gamers who play more than 7 h a week (mean age = 23…

Effects of Metacognitive Training on Cognitive Insight in a Sample of Patients with Schizophrenia.

Metacognitive training (MCT) is a group intervention that addresses cognitive biases and distortions that could help maintain delusions and hallucinations in people with schizophrenia. This program has proven its effectiveness in reducing the symptoms, but its impact on cognitive insight has scarcely been investigated. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the program's impact on cognitive insight in patients with long-term schizophrenia. A sample of 22 patients with schizophrenia was divided into two groups: one received 16 sessions of MCT (n = 11), while the other received the usual

Parental Factors Associated with Rumination Related Metacognitive Beliefs in Adolescence.

An increasing number of research studies have suggested that metacognition is associated with individuals' mental health. Specifically, metacognitive beliefs about rumination was proposed to link to the onset and maintenance of depression according to the metacognitive model of depression. The current study aimed to serve as a pilot study exploring how parents' metacognitive beliefs and parenting characteristics are associated with rumination related metacognitive beliefs in adolescents. Eighty-five parent-youth dyads were invited to complete a set of questionnaires examining their metacogniti…

A Preliminary Investigation of Metacognitive Therapy and Habit Reversal as a Treatment for Trichotillomania.

BACKGROUND: Not all patients suffering from trichotillomania (TTM) recover completely using CBT and of those that do, only a few maintain their recovery over time. AIMS: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of metacognitive methods combined with habit reversal (MCT/HRT) in trichotillomania with a relatively long-term follow-up. METHOD: A case series (n = 8) and a randomized wait-list controlled trial (n = 34) design were conducted in this study. In the case series, three of the eight patients dropped out of the study. Therefore, TTM-related symptoms were eval

The metacognitive model of depression: An empirical test in a large Norwegian sample.

The aim of the current study was to test the metacognitive model of depression in a large Norwegian sample. We hypothesized that metacognitions and rumination would explain variance in depressive symptoms as suggested by the metacognitive model. A total of 1433 participants were included using a cross-sectional study design. Participants answered scales assessing positive beliefs about rumination, rumination, negative beliefs about rumination, and symptoms of depression. Metacognitive beliefs and rumination in their hypothesized order explained significant variance in depressive symptoms. The …

Metacognitive therapy in treatment-resistant psychosis: a multiple-baseline study.

BACKGROUND: More effective psychological treatments for psychosis are required. Case series data and pilot trials suggest metacognitive therapy (MCT) is a promising treatment for anxiety and depression. Other research has found negative metacognitive beliefs and thought-control strategies may be involved in the development and maintenance of hallucinations and delusions. The potential of MCT in treating psychosis has yet to be investigated. AIMS: Our aim was to find out whether a short number of MCT sessions would be associated with clinically significant and sustained improvements in delusio

Betting on memory leads to metacognitive improvement by younger and older adults.

The present study examined how younger and older adults choose to selectively remember important information. Participants studied words paired with point values, and "bet" on whether they could later recall each word. If they bet on and recalled the word, they received the points, but if they failed to recall it, they lost those points. Participants (especially older adults) initially bet on more words than they later recalled, but greatly improved with task experience. The incorporation of rewards and penalties associated with metacognitive predictions, and multiple study-test trials, reveal

Motivated comprehension regulation: vigilant versus eager metacognitive control.

The more accurately people assess their comprehension, the more likely they are to engage in study behaviors that precisely target gaps in their learning. However, comprehension regulation involves more than knowing when to implement a new study strategy; it also involves deciding which strategy will most effectively resolve one's confusion. In two experiments, we explored how people's motivational orientations influence which study strategies they select to regulate their comprehension. In Experiment 1, people who were motivated to vigilantly protect against potential mistakes (i.e., preventi
