Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading cause of infection worldwide, including a wide array of both hospital- and community-acquired infections-most commonly bacteremia, upper and lower respiratory tract infection, skin and soft-tissue infection, osteomyelitis, and septic arthritis. This chapter describes the epidemiology of MRSA infection, its ability to confer antibiotic resistance and produce a wide array of virulence factors, and its pivotal role in human infection, especially cystic fibrosis. It also provides an introduction to the strategies for treatment of both

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a versatile human pathogen that is associated with diverse types of infections ranging from benign colonization to sepsis. We postulated that MRSA must undergo specific genotypic and phenotypic changes to cause chronic pulmonary disease. We investigated how MRSA adapts to the human airway to establish chronic infection, as occurs during cystic fibrosis (CF). MRSA isolates from patients with CF that were collected over a 4-year period were analyzed by whole-genome sequencing, transcriptional analysis, and metabolic studies. Persistent MRSA i

A 58-year-old man presented with tamponade and underwent an emergency pericardiocentesis. We made the diagnosis of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pericarditis based on culture results and treated the patient with pericardial drainage and antibiotics as the first-line therapy. After temporary relief, reaccumulation of effusion developed. We successfully created a pericardial window using thoracotomy, and the patient's postoperative course was uneventful. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pericarditis is an extremely rare and life-threatening illness. No consensus exists c

OBJECTIVES: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important health care-associated and community-associated pathogen and causes a large number of infections worldwide. For the purpose of application to topical treatment of MRSA infection, we examined the antimicrobial effects of lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) on MRSA strains. We also investigated the combination effect of LPC and gentamicin on MRSA growth.
METHODS: The LPC minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for Gram-positive (S. aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae) and Gram-negative (Escheri

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the past two decades, the management of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in chronic rhinosinusitis has posed significant challenges. This document reviews current management techniques and novel treatment modalities for sinonasal MRSA infections.
RECENT FINDINGS: Topical antibiotic therapy, that is, drops (ofloxacin) and ointments (mupirocin) as off-label use for the management of MRSA chronic sinusitis, has shown beneficial results. Other more recently trialed nonantibiotic modalities such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and colloidal silver ir

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infections are a leading cause of death in the United States. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) encompasses >50% of all S aureus strains in infected hospitalized patients and increases mortality, length of stay and healthcare costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the treatment of MRSA bacteremia with daptomycin, linezolid and vancomycin.
METHODS: Patients with MRSA bacteremia between June 2008 and November 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. A microbiology laboratory report identified patients with ≥ 1 positive MRSA blood culture. Patients

A 4-year-old male castrated Borzoi dog presented on referral for evaluation of pleural effusion, ventricular arrhythmias, and suspected dilated cardiomyopathy. Echocardiogram identified several masses along the chordae tendineae, as well as a long the annulus of the mitral valve. A blood culture was positive for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis. The dog was also positive for Bartonella DNA on PCR testing. Aggressive antibiotic therapy was instituted. However, the dog continued to have recurrent pleural effusion and progressive azotemia. The dog was euthanized 39 days after diag

Before antibiotic development, Staphylococcus aureus was a cause of serious invasive infections such as sepsis and meningitis and claimed many lives. However, even after antibiotic development, S. aureus posed a new threat as a major nosocomial pathogen, changing it to methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) since 1961. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first report on MRSA. Today, there are two classes of MRSA spreading in hospitals and the community. The United States experienced invasive MRSA epidemics in 2005, and the latter MRSA (named CA-MRSA), especially USA300, affected the en

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) is an increasingly important cause of opportunistic infections in dogs and cats. Treatment options are often limited because of the high level of antimicrobial resistance. Doxycycline resistance is common, but variable mechanisms of doxycycline resistance exist, with some conferring resistance to doxycycline but not minocycline. However, there has been limited study of minocycline susceptibility in clinical MRSP isolates nor has the association of susceptibility and clonal complex been clearly established. The objective of this study

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), one of the most common causes of infections, has been traditionally recognized as a nosocomial pathogen. However, in recent years, its epidemiology has radically changed, being now observed even more frequently in the community, and accounting for > 50% of staphylococcal infections in the US outpatient setting. Community-acquired (CA)-MRSA strains typically cause infections among otherwise healthy individuals, with risk factors differing from those of nosocomial MRSA. The clinical manifestations may range from a furuncle to life-threatening i

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of chronic colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in patients with cystic fibrosis, describe antibiotic sensitivity of the strains, and compare the patients' clinical characteristics with those of patients infected with methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with chronic S. aureus colonization were selected from a total of 50 patients with cystic fibrosis. Sputum samples were cultured according to standard microbiological procedures. Patients were considered to have chronic bronchial colonizat

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has emerged in the community among patient populations without traditional antibiotic resistance risk factors and is causing a variety of clinical syndromes, in particular skin and soft tissue infections. These infections can range from minor skin involvement that can be treated in an outpatient setting to more serious infections such as necrotizing fasciitis requiring hospitalization. Inpatient and outpatient healthcare providers must be aware of the treatment, prevention, and infection control practices for this emerging pathogen.

Recently methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was isolated from pigs and pig farmers in The Netherlands. In order to assess the dissemination of MRSA in the Dutch pig population, we screened 540 pigs in 9 slaughterhouses, where a representative portion of Dutch pigs (63%) was slaughtered in 2005. We found 209 (39%) of the pigs to carry MRSA in their nares. Forty-four of 54 groups of 10 consecutive pigs (81%), each group from a different farm, and all slaughterhouses were affected. All MRSA isolates belonged to 1 clonal group, showing Multi-Locus Sequence Type 398 and closely rela
