We present a case of a war patient treated with external fixation for a complex land mine injury involving the fracture of the tibial and fibular bones, which occurred at the front line during the war in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Excessive destruction and foreign body penetration into the distal two-thirds of the right leg and foot endangered not only the patient's lower extremity but his life as well. BACKGROUND/AIMS: Landmines have long been used in conventional warfare. These are antipersonnel mines which continue to injure people long after a ceasefire without differentiating between friend or foe, soldier or civilian, women or children. This study focuses on Afghan non-combatants engaged in mine clearing operations in Afghanistan in the aftermath of the Russo-Afghan war. The patterns and types of injuries seen are described and experiences in their management, ways, and means to prevent them, and recommendations for the rehabilitation of the affected individuals are given.

The first attempts at vaccination by Jenner's method in Transylvania (Romania) were made in 1801; vaccination became compulsory in 1808. By researching the mining archives, details about the evolution of vaccination activities were found. The most important are: the initiative of the surgeon Peter Molnar from Sacaramb (June 1801), the first vaccinations performed by the chief medical officer of the mining area (November-December 1801), the consistent reporting of vaccination, payment of the vaccinator surgeons, vaccination promotion and means of providing vaccination material.

The hormonal background of coal-pit miners was studied by radioimmunoassay method. It was determined, that adaptation to coal-dust influence proceeds by protective-compensatory increasing of cortisol, thyroid hormones and insulin levels. When a functional reserves of endocrine glands exhausted, the adaptation breaks down and pneumoconiosis may arise.

During a 3 month period 94 patients, injured by anti-personnel mines on the Thailand-Cambodian border, underwent emergency surgical treatment in the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) hospital in Khao-I-Dang, Thailand.
