BACKGROUND: To investigate whether the indication for the first revascularization (diabetic foot, acute ischaemia, aneurysmal disease, chronic occlusive disease) determines the surgical history and survival time in amputated limbs.
METHODS: The surgical history of lower extremities amputated between 2002 and 2009 was reviewed for the number of (endo)vascular procedures, minor amputations, wound debridements, complications requiring surgery (acute ischaemia, bleeding, graft infection) and limb survival time (LST).
RESULTS: 100 limbs were included in the study. The four groups underwent a simi

BACKGROUND: Evidence guiding postoperative pain management in patients taking prescription or illicit opioids undergoing minor oral surgery is limited. It remains unclear whether standard analgesic protocols for opioid naïve patients provide adequate pain relief in opioid tolerant individuals. This study evaluated whether standard postoperative analgesia achieves adequate pain control in opioid tolerant patients undergoing minor oral surgery with expected mild to moderate pain.
METHODS: A single centre retrospective study was conducted of patients undergoing minor oral surgical procedures at

Autologous bone grafts harvested from the iliac crest are commonly used in reconstructive orthopaedic surgery. Autologous bone is used to help promote bone healing in fractures and to provide structural support for reconstructive surgery. The results of autologous bone grafting are more predictable than the use of xenografts, cadaveric allografts, or synthetic bone substitutes because autologous bone grafts provide osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties, are not immunogenic, and are usually well incorporated into the graft site. In a retrospective review of 414 consecutive cases of ilia

Iatrogenic complications of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery are relatively uncommon, but contribute to potentially significant patient morbidity and mortality. The incidence of iatrogenic disease reflects the complexity of surgical procedures, including lung resection, esophagectomy, coronary artery bypass grafting, thoracic aorta repair, and cardiac valve replacement. Some iatrogenic complications are minor and common to all procedures, whereas others can be potentially devastating and are associated with precise technical components of specific surgeries. Multimodality imaging plays an i

OBJECTIVES: To review the available techniques and procedures for management of parotid and submandibular sialoliths with special emphasis on the efficacy and safety of the most commonly used combination of techniques; namely, sialendoscopy with conservative surgical removal of the stone.
METHODS: A systematic search of the English literature using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane library databases were conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Articles between the years 2004 and 2013 were selected on the basis of preset inclusion criteria. Then,

OBJECTIVE: To assess postoperative outcomes based on surgical approach for myomectomies with increasing leiomyoma burden.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database from 2014 to 2019 of benign myomectomy procedures. These cases were categorized into "smaller" and "larger" procedures based on leiomyoma burden. Smaller myomectomies included leiomyomas weighing less than 250 g or with one-four leiomyomas (Current Procedural Terminology [CPT] codes 58545 and 58140); larger myomectomies included leiom

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous device occlusion and minimally invasive surgical repair for perimembranous ventricular septal defect (pmVSD) are two typical methods to reduce the invasiveness of the conventional operation through a median sternotomy. However, few studies have compared them in terms of effectiveness and cost.
METHODS: Inpatients with isolated pmVSD who had undergone percutaneous device occlusion or minimally invasive surgical repair from June 2009 to June 2012 were reviewed for a comparative investigation between the two procedures.
RESULTS: Procedure success was achieved in 80 perc

Wound healing without complications and with minimal scarring is facilitated in minor surgical procedures by careful attention to basic surgical principles as reviewed in this article. "Langer's lines" represent the natural creases of the skin and are helpful in locating incisions. Whenever possible, incisions should be made in the skin crease, particularly in the neck or across moving parts. Some incisions, such as those required for drainage of pilonidal or perirectal abscesses, must be carefully located with specific reference to underlying structures.

BACKGROUND: In patients with moderate to severe qualitative and quantitative von Willebrand disease (VWD), even minor surgical procedures can be associated with a risk of life-threatening bleeding. Treatment strategies vary according to the levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF) and Factor VIII (FVIII). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and the safety of Voncento® (CSL Behring, Marburg, Germany), a plasma-derived FVIII/VWF concentrate (ratio 1:2.4), during surgeries performed in patients with inherited VWD.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the postoperative complications related to cochlear implants and to discuss the differences observed between adult and paediatric populations. Cochlear implant complications were defined as any pathological events observed during the postoperative period, whether or not they were directly related to the surgical technique. We therefore recorded all complications, in the broad sense of the term, ranging from acute otitis media to cochlear explantation.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of cochlear implant patients.

Alopecia areata can affect only the scalp (alopecia totalis) or whole body (alopecia universalis). The authors report a case of eyelash regrowth induced by a minor surgical procedure in a 44-year-old Caucasian man with alopecia universalis. The mechanism of the regrowth of eyelashes after a surgical procedure remains unanswered and further studies may help elucidate this phenomenon.

It is not uncommon to encounter post-surgical complications after horizontal guided bone regeneration (GBR). The primary aim of this review was to evaluate the incidence and types of complications that occur after horizontal GBR and propose management strategies to deal with these clinical situations. A secondary aim was to conduct a histomorphometric review of the wound healing process at sites that experienced post-surgical complications after GBR. A keyword search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for studies published in English from January 2015 to

A case of hypokalaemic periodic paralysis was diagnosed following a severe postoperative attack in a patient whose previous episodes of weakness had been labelled hysterical. Subsequent mild attacks of weakness were precipitated by diuretic therapy. Patients with this condition should not be treated with any drug that may induce hypokalaemia.

From September 1986 to December 1989, 144 patients with osteosarcoma of the extremities were treated with combined surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The disease-free survival was 79% for good responders (necrosis greater than 90%) and 72% for poor responders (necrosis less than 90%), and the local recurrence rate was low. Improvement in long-term prognosis and the increase of limb-sparing surgery determine a higher rate of immediate and late complications. Most of the complications were observed in limb-salvage procedures; 63% of these procedures presented one or more complications. In nin

Multiple miliary osteoma cutis of the face represents primary extra-skeletal bone formation that arises within the skin of the face. Multiple miliary osteoma cutis of the face is a rare complication of chronic inflammatory acne vulgaris and has invasive and non-invasive treatment alternatives different from acne vulgaris. Invasive techniques should be simple, easy, and inexpensive, with minimal risk of scarring and pigmentation. We used a needle microincision-extirpation technique in a patient with multiple miliary osteoma cutis unresponsive to non-invasive treatment modalities. Skin overlying

The oxygen saturation in 71 healthy paediatric patients (3.5 months to 16.7 years) was measured by pulse oximetry during transfer from the operating room to the recovery room. These measurements were recorded continuously while the patients breathed room air. Of the patients studied, 28.1 per cent exhibited significant arterial desaturation of less than or equal to 90 per cent. The corresponding PO2 for this saturation level is less than or equal to 58 mmHg. In only 45 per cent of these desaturated patients was the desaturation recognized clinically by the presence of cyanosis. Age, type of an
