Rumination longitudinally mediates the association of minority stress and depression in sexual and gender minority individuals.

Minority stress theory describes the excess stressors to which individuals from stigmatized groups are exposed as a result of their marginalized status(es), which can contribute to higher rates of depression among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals. The psychological mediation framework expanded on minority stress theory by proposing that rumination may link minority stressors to depression. Although previous studies have shown that rumination mediates associations between minority stressors and psychological distress among SGM individuals, many have done so using cross-sectional dat

Minority stressors, rumination, and psychological distress in monozygotic twins discordant for sexual minority status.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals report higher levels of depression and anxiety than heterosexual people. Genetic factors may be a 'common cause' of sexual minority status and psychological distress. Alternatively, these may be correlated because of non-genetic environmental factors (e.g. minority stressors). This study investigated minority stressors and distress in monozygotic twins discordant for sexual minority status. This design provides a test of the role of non-shared environmental factors while minimizing differences due to genetics. METHODS: Thirty-eight twin

Sexual Behavior in Sexual Minority and Non-Minority Youth from Eight European Countries.

Sexual minority youth, compared to their heterosexual peers, have a disproportionate burden of sexual risks, but it remains unclear whether such inequalities exist across cultures and countries. We used data from eight European countries participating in the 2018 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study to analyze sexual behavior in representative samples of adolescents aged 14.5-16.5 years (N = 10,583). Overall, 19.1% of the participants reported that they had had sexual intercourse. Compared to their non-minority peers (those exclusively attracted to opposite-gender partners), s

Minor splicing pathway is not minor any more: implications for the pathogenesis of motor neuron diseases.

To explore the molecular pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the nuclear function of TAR-DNA binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43) must be elucidated. TDP-43 is a nuclear protein that colocalizes with Cajal body or Gem in cultured cells. Several recent studies have reported that the decreasing number of Gems accompanied the depletion of the causative genes for ALS, TDP-43 and FUS. Gems play an important role in the pathogenesis of spinal muscular atrophy. Gems are the sites of the maturation of spliceosomes, which are composed of uridylate-rich (U) snRNAs (small nuclear RNAs) and pr

Early malaria risk screening in Nigerian minors using AutoML and cluster-based analysis of non-clinical survey data.

Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with Nigeria accounting for a substantial proportion of the global malaria burden, particularly among children under five years of age. Although rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) enable timely screening, false-negative results and delays in confirmatory microscopy can hinder early treatment in resource-limited settings. This study developed and evaluated an automated machine learning (AutoML)-based framework for early malaria risk prediction using demographic, household, and socioeconomic data from the nationally representative

Exploring Awareness and Compliance Regarding Tobacco Sales to Minors Among Tobacco Vendors in Jaipur - A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: In India, tobacco use is a serious public health concern that affects many adults and teenagers. Tobacco sales to minors continue despite strict laws under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). Strengthening enforcement and lowering teenage tobacco exposure need an understanding of tobacco sellers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding these restrictions. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate tobacco vendors knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors around selling tobacco products to school-age children and teenagers in Jaipur, India. DESIG…

The impact of trauma and daily hardships on the mental health of unaccompanied refugee minors detained in Libya.

BACKGROUND: The high trauma load and prevalence of mental distress in unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) who resettle in Western (European) countries is well documented. However, the lack of studies investigating the potentially most vulnerable population, URMs who are currently on the move in transit countries such as Libya, is alarming. AIMS: To document the mental health of URMs detained in Libya and the possible associations with trauma, flight and daily hardships. METHOD: In total n = 99 (94.9% male; n = 93) URMs participated in this cross-sectional study conducted in four detention ce…

Recruitment and Entrapment Pathways of Minors into Sex Trafficking in Canada and the United States: A Systematic Review.

The domestic sex trafficking of minors is occurring across Canada and the United States. Understanding the routes into sex trafficking, including the way traffickers target, recruit and enmesh youth in the sex trade is invaluable information for service providers and law makers developing prevention and intervention initiatives. This review synthesized research on the exploitation processes and tactics employed by traffickers in the sex trafficking of domestic minors in Canada and the US. The authors comprehensively and systematically searched five electronic databases and obtained additional …

The Construction and Psychometric Properties of the Questionnaire for Online Sexual Solicitation and Interaction of Minors With Adults.

The objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess the online sexual solicitation and interactions of minors with adults in order to document the extent of this problem. The questionnaire was constructed in four phases: (a) a review of the previous literature; (b) interviews with convicted online child-sex offenders; (c) a review of the questionnaire items by experts; and (d) a pilot study of the questionnaire administered to adolescents. The validation sample consisted of 2,731 minors (12-15 years old, 50.6% girls). Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure…

Trauma treatment outcomes for PTSD in refugee and asylum-seeking minors with uncertain residence status: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Refugee and asylum-seeking minors with an uncertain residence status are at risk of being refused treatment for PTSD due to claims that residence stability is required for a successful outcome. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize research on the effectiveness of trauma treatment for PTSD in refugee and asylum-seeking minors with an uncertain residence status. Further objectives were to investigate whether there is any evidence that an uncertain residence status predicts treatment outcome and adherence to the treatment. METHODS: Data searches were performed in Cinahl, Cochrane Library, Psy…

Post-traumatic Symptoms Among Ukrainian Refugee Minors and their Caregivers: A Descriptive Screening Study in Polish Refugee Camps.

The ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine has led to the large-scale displacement of civilians, many of whom have sought refuge in neighboring countries such as Poland. To assess the occurrence of post-traumatic stress (PTS) and other psychosocial symptoms among Ukrainian refugee children, adolescents, and adults, a cross-sectional screening study was conducted in refugee camps in Krakow between August and October 2022. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling. Data collection employed validated tools, including the Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen (CATS), the Pediatric Symptom C

Social contexts of isolation, vulnerability, and resilience among minors with experiences of commercial sexual exploitation in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive research on vulnerabilities to commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) of minors, knowledge gaps remain in understanding the broader contextual conditions that put young people at risk for CSE. Individual risk factors alone are insufficient to capture the broader context of risk; 'contextual vulnerability' to CSE requires further exploration. OBJECTIVE: This study provides an empirically-driven theoretical framework that unpacks vulnerability and resilience to CSE, focusing on the socioecological context of minors, including family, friends, schools, neighborhoods, …

Forbidden Fantasies: A Qualitative Exploration of the Content of Sexual Fantasies of Adults Reporting Sexual Attraction to Minors.

While a few studies have investigated the sexual fantasies of adults reporting sexual attraction to minor, none, to the best of our knowledge, have focused on the specific types of content of these fantasies. In this qualitative study, we conducted content and thematic analyses of the sexual fantasies reported by an international sample of 112 adults reporting sexual attraction to minors recruited online. Seven themes were found: Minor-focused fantasies, Other paraphilic fantasies, Unrealistic fantasies, Incestuous fantasies, Adult-focused fantasies, Promiscuous fantasies, and Group sex fantas…

Repressed Memories (of Sexual Abuse Against Minors) and Statutes of Limitations in Europe: Status Quo and Possible Alternatives.

One of the most heated debates in psychological science concerns the concept of repressed memory. We discuss how the debate on repressed memories continues to surface in legal settings, sometimes even to suggest avenues of legal reform. In the past years, several European countries have extended or abolished the statute of limitations for the prosecution of sexual crimes. Such statutes force legal actions (e.g., prosecution of sexual abuse) to be applied within a certain period of time. One of the reasons for the changes in statutes of limitations concerns the idea of repressed memory. We argu

Paraphilias among Roman Catholic priests: what we know, and do not know, about sexual clergy-abusers of minors.

The issue of sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic Church is widely discussed in the media. Nevertheless, the term ‛priest-pedophile'has been used inaccurately to identify perpetrators. There is very little research directly dealing with this group of offenders among Catholic clergy, and we do not yet have any theory that would adequately explain this type of behavior. Attempts to psychologically characterize priests who sexually abuse minors have brought limited success so far. The purpose of this article is to present the most important issues and clinical dilemmas related to the diagnosis …

Model Minority and Its Discontents.

Model Minority expectations for Asian Americans have been in circulation for more than seven decades, and their grip on the Asian American psyche endures to the present day. In previous papers, the author addressed Asian American compliance with these expectations as a trauma-based, identifying-with-aggressor adaptation to the anti-Asian racism in American society: Reeling from the long history of racial discrimination that culminated in the incarceration of 120,000 individuals of Japanese origin during WWII, Asian Americans embraced compliance and model citizenship as a way of survival.
