Spatial variation in gender-biased parasitism: host-related, parasite-related and environment-related effects.

The gender-biased pattern of parasite infestation has been shown to be a complicated phenomenon that cannot be explained by a single mechanism but rather involves several different mechanisms. We asked what are the factors that affect the manifestation and extent of gender-biased parasitism and studied the relationship between parasite-related (mean abundance, mean species richness and total species richness of all parasites), host-related (rodent density and proportion of reproductive males and females both separately and together) and environment-related (mean daily maximal and minimal tempe

Its popula … , this study evaluated the safety and efficacy of oral administration of afoxolaner for controlling mite infestations. A total of 178 lizards were clinically examined and treated with a single oral dose of afoxolaner (2.5 mg/kg). Mite infestation was monitored before treatment (T0) in all lizards. In addition, 20 specimens kept in individual enclosures and 30 from …

A rapid survey technique for Tropilaelaps mite (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae) detection.

Parasitic Tropilaelaps (Delfinado and Baker) mites are a damaging pest of European honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) in Asia. These mites represent a significant threat if introduced to other regions of the world, warranting implementation of Tropilaelaps mite surveillance in uninfested regions. Current Tropilaelaps mite-detection methods are unsuitable for efficient large scale screening. We developed and tested a new bump technique that consists of firmly rapping a honey bee brood frame over a collecting pan. Our method was easier to implement than current detection tests, reduced time spent in

[Chronic blepharitis and Demodex].

PURPOSE: Demodex is a mite commonly found in eyelash hair follicles and sebaceous glands of healthy people. Due to the fact this mite has also been reported in many chronic cases of blepharitis, we aimed to investigate the incidence of infestation with this mite in healthy people and in patients with chronic blepharitis, in addition to evaluating the response to the different treatments used for blepharitis. METHODS: 105 subjects without blepharitis were selected as a control group and 20 subjects diagnosed as having chronic blepharitis were selected as patients. Epilated eyelashes were obser

Refining the Diagnostic Technique to Determine Prevalence of Demodex Mites in Eyelash Hair Follicles Within Standard Ophthalmic Practice: A Single-Center Outpatient Clinical Study.

PURPOSE: A high density of Demodex infestation in human eyelids and eyelash follicles has been implicated in a variety of ocular surface conditions. However, Demodex infestation often goes undiagnosed and untreated, due to an overlap in signs and symptoms with other sources of ocular surface inflammation. We sought to refine the diagnostic technique for outpatient assessment for Demodex infestation and determine prevalence of Demodex mites in the hair follicles of eyelashes from patients in a standard ophthalmic practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients recruited from a single outpatient ophth

Expression and characterisation of a Sarcoptes scabiei protein tyrosine kinase as a potential antigen for scabies diagnosis.

Scabies is a disease that harms humans and other animals that is caused by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei burrowing into the stratum corneum of the skin. In the early stages of scabies, symptoms are often subclinical and there are no effective diagnostic methods. Herein, we cloned, expressed and characterised an S. scabiei protein tyrosine kinase (SsPTK) and evaluated its diagnostic value as a recombinant antigen in rabbit during the early stages of Sarcoptes infestation. The SsPTK protein is ~30 kDa, lacks a signal peptide, and shares high homology with a PTK from the rabbit ear mite Psoropt

On-host ecology and off-host survival of the sheep scab mite Psoroptes ovis.

These studies were conducted to investigate the possible role of certain aspects of the on-host ecology and off-host survival of the sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, in the dissemination of infestation. All developmental stages of the mite occurred in the fleece both proximally or distal to the skin of infested Merino and Dorper sheep. A larger proportion of mites was present in the fleece of Dorper sheep distal to the skin in the late afternoon and early morning than at other times during the day. Immature and adult mites readily transferred to tufts of wool or hair placed on infested sheep o

Ectoparasites of ring-necked pheasants in Nebraska.

In 1971, 1983 and 1984, ectoparasites were identified on 61 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) from Nebraska. Birds were collected throughout the state from 11 of 93 counties. Four species of chewing lice (Mallophaga) were collected: Lipeurus maculosus, Goniodes colchici, Lagopoecus colchicus and Amyrsidea megalosoma. One species of analgid mite, Megninia sp. was collected. Apparently, this species is new and undescribed. The four mallophagan species have not been reported from Nebraska.

Demodex: The worst enemies are the ones that used to be friends.

Demodex mites are common ectoparasites of the human pilosebaceous units. Most adults are infested with Demodex mites without clinical symptoms. Demodex mite will only become a pathogenic organism when there is an abnormal increase in the number of Demodex mite density. This situation happens when the equilibrium between Demodex mites, skin microenvironment and human immunity system changes. Demodex infestation can cause multiple skin disorders, which are grouped under the term demodicosis or demodicidosis. Clinical manifestations of demodicosis can mimic other known skin diseases such as folli

[Domestic ectoparasitoses, a review].

Human parasitic infestations of the skin by mites (Acari) and insects can be divided into permanent and temporary ectoparasitoses. This fact is important for diagnosis and treatment. Permanent ectoparasites are highly adapted to their host, the human being, and live in permanent contact with him. Diagnosis is usually simple and the parasite can be found on the patient. Treatment is by antiparasitic topical medication. In contrast to permanent ectoparasitosis, temporary ectoparasites are not found on the patient. When a bite reaction is perceptible the insect has left its host. The history of t

Comparison of two techniques for measuring Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis in rosacea patients: standardized skin surface biopsy vs. direct microscopic examination.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 5.4% of the world population. Among its pathogenic factors is infestation by Demodex spp. Standardized skin surface biopsy (SSSB) and direct microscopic examination (DME) are widely used methods to measure Demodex spp density (Dd); however, there is no agreement on the method of choice, nor the prevalence of infestation in rosacea patients. This study compared both techniques in rosacea patients. A prospective study was conducted with 61 patients diagnosed with rosacea by dermatologists from two dermatology centres. Dd was
