From bite marks to vertical facial phenotype: Investigating the relationship between craniofacial and dental arch parameters using conventional wax and digital models.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate whether a relationship exists between craniofacial structures and bite marks, thereby enabling the prediction of facial type based on bite mark characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight volunteers (aged 19-25) without orthodontic treatment, craniofacial anomalies, or temporomandibular dysfunction participated. Bite marks were created on wax-covered sponge rollers. Intercanine distance, arch depth, and arch length were measured from wax models using a caliper and from intraoral scans using the iTero Scanner. Facial profile photographs were a

MEPE-derived ASARM peptide inhibits odontogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells and impairs mineralization in tooth models of X-linked hypophosphatemia.

Mutations in PHEX (phosphate-regulating gene with homologies to endopeptidases on the X-chromosome) cause X-linked familial hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH), a disorder having severe bone and tooth dentin mineralization defects. The absence of functional PHEX leads to abnormal accumulation of ASARM (acidic serine- and aspartate-rich motif) peptide - a substrate for PHEX and a strong inhibitor of mineralization - derived from MEPE (matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein) and other matrix proteins. MEPE-derived ASARM peptide accumulates in tooth dentin of XLH patients where it may impair dentino

Impact of a sugar-sweetened beverage tax on dental caries, periodontitis and edentulism in Australia: a modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral diseases are a growing public health challenge affecting approximately 3.5 billion people globally. Nearly 32% of Australian adults aged 15 and above have untreated dental caries. Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are a significant contributor to oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontitis and edentulism. We aimed to estimate the potential impact of implementing a 20% tax on SSBs on the burden of oral disease in Australia. METHODS: A prior proportional multistate lifetable model of the 2019 Australian adult population was used. We added dental caries, periodontitis an

Improving dental disease diagnosis using a cross attention based hybrid model of DeiT and CoAtNet.

Accurate dental diagnosis is essential for effective treatment planning and improving patient outcomes, particularly in identifying various dental diseases, such as cavities, fillings, implants, and impacted teeth. This study proposes a new hybrid model that integrates the strengths of the data-efficient image transformer (DeiT) and convolutional attention network (CoAtNet) to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Our approach's first step involves preprocessing dental radiographic images to improve their quality and enhance feature extraction. The model employs a cross-attention fusion mechanism that

Dental age estimation in adults using the Lamendin criteria: Validation of a bayesian model in the Brazilian population.

Age estimation provides information for biological profile, which is used as an important data during the process of to aid in the identification of bodies of deceased persons. Lamendin et al. proposed a simplified dental age estimation technique for adults based on the analysis of periodontal recession height, root height, and root translucency height. These characteristics were used to build a multi-population database that served in the development of a Bayesian model, known as the Forensic International Dental Database (FIDB). However, before this research, this model did not incorporate d

The effect of mechanical loading on osteogenesis of human dental pulp stromal cells in a novel in vitro model.

Tooth loss often results in alveolar bone resorption because of lack of mechanical stimulation. Thus, the mechanism of mechanical loading on stem cell osteogenesis is crucial for alveolar bone regeneration. We have investigated the effect of mechanical loading on osteogenesis in human dental pulp stromal cells (hDPSCs) in a novel in vitro model. Briefly, 1 × 10(7) hDPSCs were seeded into 1 ml 3% agarose gel in a 48-well-plate. A loading tube was then placed in the middle of the gel to mimic tooth-chewing movement (1 Hz, 3 × 30 min per day, n = 3). A non-loading group was used as a control. At

Proposing the use of dental pulp stem cells as a suitable biological model of neurofibromatosis type 1.

PURPOSE: This study aims to propose the dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) as a model for studying two features related to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), i.e. augmented proliferative capacity and altered osteogenic differentiation. METHODS: We isolated a DPSC from the pulp of deciduous teeth of a 6-year-old NF1 patient and two other healthy children of similar age. Cell proliferation was assayed by counting with a haemocytometer after successive cell re-plating. In order to compare osteogenic differentiation, we used osteoblast-differentiating medium and quantified alizarin stain, which relates

State-transition and simulation-based modeling approaches for simulating the progression of dental caries: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is a common chronic disease in children, influenced by biological, behavioral, and environmental factors, and modeling approaches provide a structured way to simulate disease progression, evaluate preventive or therapeutic interventions, assess economic outcomes, and inform policy. Despite increasing use of decision-analytic and simulation-based frameworks in pediatric dental caries, a comprehensive overview of model types, structures, and applications is lacking. The objective of this scoping review is to identify and describe state-transition and simulation-based
