The Effect of High Velocity Low Amplitude Cervical Manipulations on the Musculoskeletal System: Literature Review.

In manual therapy, high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) cervical manipulation techniques are frequently used, but often the physiological and biomechanical effects that can be obtained are not completely clear. The techniques are mostly used for the treatment of biomechanical joint dysfunction, but little is yet known about the possibility of using them in order to achieve better performance on healthy subjects. The objective of the study is to describe how cervical manipulation can impact on a musculoskeletal disorder. A systematic search was carried out on the Pubmed electronic database from t

Central nervous system and musculoskeletal medication profile of a veteran cohort with blast-related injuries.

Little is known about the utilization of central nervous system (CNS) and musculoskeletal (MS) medications in Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) veterans with blast-related injuries (BRIs). We followed prescription drug use among a cohort of 133 OIF/OEF veterans with BRIs by using the Joint Theatre Trauma Registry, the Tampa Polytrauma Registry, and electronic medical records. We extracted 12 months of national medication records from the Veterans Health Administration Decision Support System and analyzed them with descriptive statistics. Over the 12-month period (fis

A prospective series of musculoskeletal system rehabilitation of arthropathic joints in young male hemophilic patients.

The study aims to evaluate prospective results of physical therapy interventions and rehabilitation of arthropathic joints in young male hemophilic patients. Given that the effectiveness of the therapy would be higher if therapy is provided at early ages, a series of males aged 18 years or younger were included in the study. The study is a descriptive case series of 31 hemophilic children who consecutively referred to the physical therapy and rehabilitation clinic from the pediatric hematology clinic of the same hospital over a period of 12 months. After getting their oral informed consent, al

[Basic research of applying extracorporeal shockwaves on the musculoskeletal system. An assessment of current status].

Detailed knowledge concerning the action of extracorporeal shock waves on the locomotor system as well as concerning possible side effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) are crucial to optimize the clinical use of ESWT for the treatment of illnesses such as calcific tendinitis of the shoulder, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, aseptic pseudarthrosis, and aseptic hip necrosis. This study presents the current knowledge gained from animal experiments, which have yielded important findings, in particular concerning possible side effects of ESWT. Very recent studies have also provided v

Screening for congenital dislocation of the hip, scoliosis, and other abnormalities affecting the musculoskeletal system.

The three main conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system currently being screened for are spina bifida cystica, congenital dislocation of the hip, and scoliosis. The techniques of screening are different for each: amniotic fluid analysis for spina bifida cystica, a manual physical examination for congenital dislocation of the hip, and a visual examination for scoliosis. Properly time amniotic fluid analysis for alpha-fetoprotein is both a sensitive and specific test for neural tube defects. However, because of the low incidence of spina bifida cystica, this examination is justified only …

Biomechanical Modeling and Analysis of the Lower-Limb Musculoskeletal System for Hemiplegia: A Pilot Study.

Preliminary estimation of lower-limb motor function is important in rehabilitation research, especially for biomechanical assessment of post-stroke hemiplegic gait. However, subject-specific musculoskeletal modeling in this population is challenging because standard maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) testing is often unsafe or unreliable for normalizing surface electromyography (sEMG) signals. To address this limitation, a normalized correction coefficient was introduced for pathological sEMG preprocessing, and an improved Hill-type muscle model (iHMM) was established to account for submaxima

Musculoskeletal ultrasound features-based scoring system can evaluate the severity of gout and asymptomatic hyperuricaemia.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a tool which can evaluate the severity of the joint injury in individuals with gout and asymptomatic hyperuricaemia. METHODS: This retrospective study included 616 male patients: 245 with asymptomatic hyperuricaemia and 371 with intercritical gout. All patients underwent ultrasonography of the knee, ankle and first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints. Ultrasound features that were significantly different between groups were entered into a binary logistic regression analysis to identify discriminative factors. The ultrasound signs were scored based on their odds ratios, whi

Advantages and limitations of imaging the musculoskeletal system by conventional radiological, radionuclide, and hybrid modalities.

The endpoint of an efficient and accurate diagnosis of musculoskeletal pathology can take many different routes. Currently, conventional radiological techniques, such as plain radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are used in the assessment of patients with benign and malignant bone disease. An understanding of the advantages and limitations of the modalities available will help expedite diagnosis, and hence treatment. In this review, we discuss the advantages and limitations of the modalities available in investigating benign and malignant musculosk

Field hospital treatment of blast wounds of the musculoskeletal system during the Yugoslav civil war.

The spectrum of wounding and treatment of forty-one patients with musculoskeletal blast injuries at a U.S. military field hospital in the former Yugoslavia was reviewed. Patients underwent wound exploration, irrigation, debridement, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, early fracture stabilization, and appropriate reconstructive surgery. Four patients developed wound infections. Two patients died as a result of their injuries (overall mortality 5 percent). There were three below-knee amputations and five other amputations (above-knee, ankle, midtarsal, partial forefoot, and finger). Three patien

Effects of diet quality on the musculoskeletal system of the masticatory apparatus in Mus musculus domesticus.

Isolated environments such as islands can provide restricted dietary resources of varying quality. This has a major impact on evolution of island species, and can lead to rapid morphological adaptation, especially in small mammals. To understand the impact of diet quality on the masticatory apparatus in the model species Mus musculus domesticus, we quantitatively analysed the main masticatory muscles and the mandibular morphology in semi-natural populations kept on different diets for six generations. The investigation of individuals of the F5 generation raised on high quality (HQ) or standard

Prediction of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Exacerbation in Patients with Clinical and Subclinical Musculoskeletal Inflammation.

Background/Objectives: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease affecting multiple organ systems, characterized by remissions and relapses. Musculoskeletal involvement occurs in up to 95% of patients and may present as the initial symptom in 50%. Such involvement is often subclinical, without obvious joint or tendon inflammation. Musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) has proven valuable for detecting pathological changes in joints and periarticular structures, including in SLE patients, and early detection, particularly in subclinical stages, supports optimal therapy, monitoring,

News from the old: Aging features in the intracardiac, musculoskeletal, and enteric nervous systems.

Aging strongly affects the peripheral nervous system (PNS), triggering alterations that vary depending on the innervated tissue. The most frequent alteration in peripheral nerve aging is reduced nerve fiber and glial density which can lead to abnormal nerve functionality. Interestingly, the activation of a destructive phenotype takes place in macrophages across the PNS while a reduced number of neuronal bodies is a unique feature of some enteric ganglia. Single cell/nucleus RNA-sequencing has unveiled a striking complexity of cell populations in the peripheral nerves, and these refined cell ty

Development of a Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Protocol to Evaluate Hand Pain in Systemic Sclerosis Patients.

Hand impairment is a frequently reported complaint in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients and a leading cause of disability and diminished quality of life. Managing hand pain can be particularly challenging due to the coexistence of non-inflammatory arthralgias, inflammatory arthritis, acro-osteolysis, tenosynovitis, joint contractures, tendon friction rubs, nerve entrapment, Raynaud's phenomenon (RP), digital ulcers (DU), sclerodactyly, calcinosis, and chronic pain. While physical examination and radiographs are the first line methods for evaluating hand pain, they are limited in scope and miss

The diagnostic accuracy of 332 incisional biopsies in patients with malignant tumors in the musculoskeletal system.

BACKGROUND: It is known that specimen collection followed by histopathological workup is the core of evidence-based medical therapy of musculoskeletal tumors. There exist many controversies about how a biopsy should be performed. While some centers recommend minimal invasive biopsy procedures, mostly the core needle biopsy (CNB), others prefer the incisional biopsy. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to determine the accuracy of incisional biopsy for malignant tumors in the musculoskeletal system. Moreover, advantages and disadvantages to other biopsy methods are discussed. METHODS: This…

The arteries of the musculoskeletal system of siamangs, and a comparison with other hylobatids, greater apes, and humans.

Limited research on the gross anatomy of the blood vessels has been conducted on hylobatids, or lesser apes, so far. Here, we present a detailed study of the arteries of siamangs (Symphalangus) and compare our findings with data compiled from our previous studies as well as from the literature about other hylobatids, greater apes, and humans. In particular, a three-dimensional full-body computed tomography data set of a siamang neonate was analyzed in detail for this study, with notable findings in the head and neck, thorax, upper limb, abdomen and pelvis, and lower limb. Of the 62 arteries th

Tofacitinib in the treatment of skin and musculoskeletal involvement in patients with systemic sclerosis, evaluated by ultrasound.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune connective tissue disease characterized by fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, autoimmunity-driven damage and vasculopathy. The current approved disease-modifying treatments have limited efficacy, and treatment is guided toward alleviating organ complications. Thus, there is an unmet need for discovering new effective treatment options. There is recent evidence that the JAK/STAT signaling pathway is markedly activated in SSc patients. To assess the efficacy and safety of tofacitinib (TOF) on skin and musculoskeletal involvement as compared to
