Superficial Mycoses Associated with Diaper Dermatitis.

Diapers create particular conditions of moisture and friction, and with urine and feces come increased pH and irritating enzymes (lipases and proteases). Fungi can take advantage of all these factors. Candida yeasts, especially C. albicans, are responsible for the most frequent secondary infections and are isolated in more than 80 % of cases. Correct diagnosis is important for ensuring the correct prescription of topical antimycotics. Nystatin, imidazoles and ciclopirox are effective. It is important to realize there are resistant strains. Dermatophytes can infect the diaper area, with the mos

Invasive mycoses: strategies for effective management.

Effective management of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) depends on early individualized therapy that optimizes efficacy and safety. Consid … nded antifungal therapy. This article discusses strategies for the effective management of invasive mycoses, with a particular focus on antifungal hepatotoxicity.

Systemic mycoses in immunodepressed patients (AIDS).

Infectious and noninfectious skin diseases are observed in about 90% of HIV patients, and their incidence increases and is more severe as the immune system weakens. Cutaneous manifestations are considered good clinical predictors for the immunological condition of the patient with AIDS and the introduction of highly effective antiretroviral therapy totally changed the prognosis of the mycoses, among other diseases associated with AIDS, permitting longer survival and acceptable level of quality of life for these patients. This contribution describes the systemic mycoses that are more frequent i…

Epidemiological trends in skin mycoses worldwide.

Fungal infections of the skin and nails are a common global problem. The high prevalence of superficial mycotic infections shows that 20-25% of the world's population has skin mycoses, making these one of the most frequent forms of infection. Pathogens responsible for skin mycoses are primarily anthropophilic and zoophilic dermatophytes from the genera Trichophyton (T.), Microsporum (M.) and Epidermophyton (E.). There appears to be considerable inter- and intra-continental variability in the global incidence of these fungal infections. Trichophyton rubrum, T. interdigitale (mentagrophytes var.…

Butenafine and superficial mycoses: current status.

BACKGROUND: Butenafine hydrochloride, a benzylamine derivative, exhibits potent fungicidal activity particularly against dermatophytes, aspergilli, dimorphic and dematiaceous fungi. OBJECTIVE: To review pharmacokinetics, mechanism of actions and clinical efficacy of butenafine against various dermatophytic and other superficial fungal infections. METHODS: Medline search was made using keyword butenafine. All English language articles were considered for this review. For inclusion in clinical efficacy section when ever available randomized controlled trials were considered a priority over oth

Epidemiology of central nervous system mycoses.

Fungal infections of the central nervous system (CNS) were considered rare until the 1970s. This is no longer true in recent years due to widespread use of corticosteroids, cytotoxic drugs and antibiotics. Immunocompromised patients with underlying malignancy organ transplantations and acquired immune deficiency syndrome are all candidates for acquiring fungal infections either in meninges or brain. A considerable number of cases of CNS fungal infections even in immunocompetent hosts have been reported. A vast array of fungi may cause infection in the CNS, but barring a few, most of them are a

Endemic mycoses: blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and sporotrichosis.

The endemic mycoses are diverse group of fungi that share several characteristics. They are able to cause disease in healthy hosts, they each occupy a specific ecologic niche in the environment, and they exhibit temperature dimorphism, existing as molds in the environment at temperature of 25 degrees C to 30 degrees C, and as yeasts, or spherules in the case of coccidioidomycosis, at body temperatures. This article discusses histoplasmosis and blastomycosis. Sporotrichosis, which differs in that it is usually a localized lymphocutaneous infection, is included because it shares the characterist…
