A Pseudo-Mytilus Edulis Foot Protein-Based Hydrogel Adhesive with Osteo-Vascular-Immune Coupling Effects for Osteoporotic Bone-Implant Integration.

The reduced initial stability of orthopedic implants in osteoporotic bone matrices, coupled with excessive M1 macrophage polarization at bone-implant interfaces, disrupt bone-immune homeostasis and vascularization, ultimately leading to implant loosening or failure. Inspired by the marine mussel Mytilus edulis foot protein (Mefp), a pH-responsive multifunctional bone glue (YDC-Gel-Zn) with broad-spectrum adhesion capabilities is developed for osteoporotic bone-implant integration. This pseudo-Mefp bioglue enables dual-interface adhesion via catechol-rich sequences that mediate stable metal-phe

Antioxidant enzyme responses of Mytilus galloprovincialis to olive mill wastewater and Vibrio harveyi co-exposure under static and flow-through conditions.

Coastal marine organisms are increasingly exposed to co-occurring chemical effluents and opportunistic pathogens; however, the mechanisms governing their combined toxicological effects remain insufficiently resolved. This study evaluated the combined effects of olive mill wastewater (OMW) and Vibrio harveyi on Mytilus galloprovincialis, with a focus on antioxidant enzyme responses, microbial dynamics, and environmental conditions under static and flow-through exposure regimes. Mussels were exposed to sublethal OMW concentrations in the presence and absence of V. harveyi, and tissue-specific ac

Additive metal accumulation and possible synergistic pathologies during intermittent exposure to mixtures of mercury plus cadmium in the mussel, Mytilus edulis.

In natural ecosystems, aquatic organisms are intermittently exposed to a complex cocktail of contaminants. Current hazard assessments use only a continuous exposure profile for chemicals, with limited knowledge on the effects of intermittent exposures with mixtures. The study aimed to explore interactive effects of binary mixture of Hg and Cd on metal accumulation in M. edulis compared to each metal alone during intermittent exposure, using biomarkers that characterizes oxidative stress and overall physiological effects. Mytilus edulis were intermittently exposed (2 days exposure, 2 days in cl

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) as a potential anti-stress agent: Counteracting cellular and physiological changes by sodium lauryl sulphate in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

The present study was prompted by an interest in understanding the potentially beneficial effects of bergamot peel extract on the cellular and physiological performance of appropriate aquatic model organisms subjected to daily environmental challenges, namely pollution. In this regard, specimens of Mytilus galloprovincialis were exposed to Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (0.01 mg/L), an extract of bergamot peels (5 mg/L), and a solution of the two (SLS + BRG), for fourteen days. The immune response was evaluated by assessing the ability of haemocyte cells to engulf foreign elements in conjunction with

Possible Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Decrease in the Antibacterial Activity of Protamine-like Proteins after Exposure of Mytilus galloprovincialis to Chromium and Mercury.

Natural bioactive compounds represent a new frontier of antimicrobial molecules, and the marine ecosystem represents a new challenge in this regard. In the present work, we evaluated the possibility of changes in the antibacterial activity of protamine-like (PL) proteins, the major nuclear basic protein components of Mytilus galloprovincialis sperm chromatin, after the exposure of mussels to subtoxic doses of chromium (VI) (1, 10, and 100 nM) and mercury (1, 10, and 100 pM) HgCl2, since these metals affect some properties of PL. After exposure, we analyzed the electrophoretic pattern of PLs by

Male-associated polypeptide (MAP) expression in different compartments of the reproductive system of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis: immunocytochemical and western blot study.

Mytilus mussels are characterized by annually repeated reproduction which is associated with subsequent growth, morphogenesis, breakdown and redevelopment of the gonad and reproductive tract into mantle mesenchyme. We present a description of the expression of the male-associated polypeptide (MAP; see Mikhailov et al. 1995) in different compartments of the male reproductive system as well as in mantle gonad-supporting tissue. MAP is expressed in both gonad and mantle structures in dynamic patterns that show a substantial overlap in terms of dependence on the stage of gonad development/involuti

Legacy persistent organic pollutants in Mytilus galloprovincialis from the Sochi River estuary (Russian black sea coast): A mussel watch monitoring study.

This study presents current data on POP levels in the soft tissues of Mytilus galloprovincialis from the Sochi River estuary on the Russian Black Sea coast. Our results revealed a predominance of degradation products (β-HCH, DDE, and DDD), indicating the long-term environmental persistence of these substances. However, the presence of parent pesticide compounds (lindane, o,p'-DDT, and p,p'-DDT) in some samples could suggest a possible recent local influx. Among PCBs, highly chlorinated congeners (PCBs 118, 153, and 138) were prevalent, implying a historical contribution of these xenobiotics. S

The filter-feeding bivalve Mytilus chilensis capture pelagic stages of Caligus rogercresseyi: A potential controller of the sea lice fish parasites.

The copepod Caligus rogercresseyi is an ectoparasite of several salmonid species. The pumping activity of filter-feeding molluscs could reduce the abundance of copepod dispersive larval stages in the water column. In this research, nauplius II and copepodid larvae of C. rogercresseyi were exposed to filtering mussels (Mytilus chilensis) of different sizes. These mussels were able to filter both larval stages, although they were more efficient in catching nauplius II. The fact that nauplius II were ingested more efficiently could be explained by their smaller size, lower swimming velocity (esca

Molecular epidemiology of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. in mussels (Mytilus californianus) and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) from Central California.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are of public health importance, with recognized transmission through recreational waters. Therefore, both can contaminate marine waters and shellfish, with potential to infect marine mammals in nearshore ecosystems. A 2-year study was conducted to evaluate the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in mussels located at two distinct coastal areas in California, namely, (i) land runoff plume sites and (ii) locations near sea lion haul-out sites, as well as in feces of California sea lions (CSL) (Zalophus californianus) by the use of direct fluorescent antibody (DFA

Integrative oxidative stress biomarkers in gills and digestive gland of the combined exposure to citalopram and bezafibrate with polyethylene microplastics on mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) and microplastics (MPs) have been detected in different marine compartments from coastal areas, raising concerns due to their simultaneous discharge through wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the role of MPs as vectors of pollutants for marine organisms. This study investigates the biochemical effects of citalopram (CIT) and bezafibrate (BEZ) on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, at environmentally relevant concentrations, and their co-exposure with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) MPs. MPs accumulated in gills and digestive glands during exposur

Comparison of viability and phagocytic responses of hemocytes withdrawn from the bivalves Mytilus edulis and Dreissena polymorpha, and exposed to human parasitic protozoa.

Bivalve molluscs are now considered indicator species of aquatic contamination by human parasitic protozoa. Nonetheless, the possible effects of these protozoa on the immune system of their paratenic hosts are poorly documented. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two protozoa on hemocyte viability and phagocytosis from two mussels, the zebra mussel (freshwater habitat) and the blue mussel (seawater habitat). For these purposes, viability and phagocytic markers have been analysed on hemocytes from mussels without biological stress (control hemocytes), and on hemocytes exposed

Assessment of the mechanisms of detoxification of chemical compounds and antioxidant enzymes in the digestive gland of mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, from Mediterranean coastal sites.

In this study the effects of the main marine pollutants (metals, PAHs, PCBs and DDTs) were assessed in native mussels from the Mediterranean coast of Spain. For this purpose several biomarkers such as benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase (BPH), DT-diaphorase (DTD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidases (GPs), glutathione reductase (GR), metallothionein (MT) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were measured in the digestive gland. Results showed increased LPO levels in mussels which accumulated high loads of organic compounds and arsenic in their ti

Identification and molecular characterization of a mucosal lectin (MeML) from the blue mussel Mytilus edulis and its potential role in particle capture.

Molecular recognition of food particles has been suspected to play an important role in particle selection in suspension feeding bivalves. Lectins are a group of sugar-binding proteins that are widely involved in biological recognition. They have been reported in mucus covering bivalves feeding organs and were recently shown to mediate particle sorting in these animals. In this study, we report a novel putative C-type lectin from the blue mussel Mytilus edulis. The cDNA of this lectin (hereby designated MeML for M. edulis mucocyte lectin) is 459bp long encoding a 152-residue protein. MeML pres

Ecotoxicological evaluation of four UV filters using marine organisms from different trophic levels Isochrysis galbana, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Paracentrotus lividus, and Siriella armata.

Due to the concern about the negative effects of exposure to sunlight, combinations of UV filters like 4-Methylbenzylidene-camphor (4-MBC), Benzophenone-3 (BP-3), Benzophenone-4 (BP-4) and 2-Ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC) are being introduced in all kind of cosmetic formulas. These chemicals are acquiring a concerning status due to their increasingly common use and the potential risk for the environment. The aim of this study is to assess the behaviour of these compounds in seawater, the toxicity to marine organisms from three trophic levels including autotrophs (Isochrysis galbana), her

Combined effects of a pharmaceutical pollutant, gemfibrozil, and abiotic stressors (warming and air exposure) on cellular stress responses of the blue mussels Mytilus edulis.

Lipid-lowering drugs such as gemfibrozil (GFB) are widely used and highly biologically active, contributing to their persistence in wastewater and subsequent release into aquatic ecosystems. However, the potential impacts and toxic mechanisms of these emerging pollutants on non-target marine organisms, particularly keystone bivalves like Mytilus edulis, remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of GFB (25 µg l-1) on oxidative, nitrosative, and dicarbonyl stress in M. edulis, and explored how abiotic stressors

Influence of blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) intake on fatty acid composition in erythrocytes and plasma phospholipids and serum metabolites in women with rheumatoid arthritis.

Intake of blue mussels decreased disease activity in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the randomized cross-over MIRA (Mussels, inflammation and RA) trial. This study investigates potential causes of the decreased disease activity by analysing fatty acid composition in erythrocytes and plasma phospholipids and serum metabolites in samples from the participants of the MIRA trial. Twenty-three women completed the randomized 2 × 11-week cross-over dietary intervention, exchanging one cooked meal per day, 5 days a week, with a meal including 75 g blue mussels or 75 g meat. Can we continue to neglect genomic variation in introgression rates when inferring the history of speciation? A case study in a Mytilus hybrid zone.

The use of molecular data to reconstruct the history of divergence and gene flow between populations of closely related taxa represents a challenging problem. It has been proposed that the long-standing debate about the geography of speciation can be resolved by comparing the likelihoods of a model of isolation with migration and a model of secondary contact. However, data are commonly only fit to a model of isolation with migration and rarely tested against the secondary contact alternative. Furthermore, most demographic inference methods have neglected variation in introgression rates and as

Exposure to tire particles leachates reduces clearance rate, increases trace metal accumulation and mortality, and impairs gut microbiota in mussels (Mytilus edulis).

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are a major source of microplastics in the environment, including aquatic ecosystems. Their leachates are of growing concern due to their acute toxicity on aquatic organisms. This study investigated the effects of tire leachates on mortality, clearance rate, metal accumulation, and the structure and diversity of the gut microbiota in the blue mussels (Mytilus edulis). Mussels were exposed for one and five weeks to different leachate concentrations (prepared from 5 g of new tire particles (TP) per liter) and a reconstituted metal solution reflecting the concentrations
