[Nina Rodrigues, epidemiologist: historical study of beriberi outbreaks in a mental asylum in Bahia, Brasil (1897-1904)].

Beriberi outbreaks in the São João de Deus Asylum, 1897-1904, are presented, focusing on studies by legist physician Nina Rodrigues. The goals were: to trace the steps of the original investigation of an unknown disease; to understand the purpose of excluding mentally ills in an asylum institution. Methodology encompassed occurence narration and qualitative analytical procedures for the documental interpretation of voluntary and involuntary testimonies, combined with statistical treatment of measurable data. Frequent and progressive outbreaks of beriberi have caused two-thirds of the asylum de…

Navigating Ambivalence: What It Means to Share Your Health Story Online.

With increasing frequency, personal medical journeys are shared online. While online platforms can provide life-saving community, emotional validation, and practical "lived expertise," they may also expose users to harassment, misinformation, and emotional exhaustion. This commentary analyzes the experiences of 12 people who have shared their personal health journeys on social media. Overall, the narrative authors show deep ambivalence toward sharing. I observe three core tensions in the narratives: (a) community versus critics, where the authors find comfort, support, and solidarity online, b

Your story, your brand: A career core competency for nurses.

Intentional management of one's professional story, or narrative discipline, is now a core competency and responsibility for nurses at all career stages. Workforce mobility, interdisciplinary collaboration, broadening career opportunities, and the expansion of digital platforms have elevated the importance of how nurses are perceived by colleagues, organizations, and the public. Increasingly, a nurse's professional story and digital footprint influence professional opportunities, career advancement, and even employment decisions. Many companies invest heavily in brand management to build trust

Digital storytelling across the life course: Protocol for a theory-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Digital storytelling (DST) combines first-person narratives with images, sound, and video to convey health experiences, empower under-represented voices, and foster empathy. Insight into how digital stories portray life-course influences remains scarce. Guided by the Life Course Health Development (LCHD) framework, this study protocol describes a planned theory-based analysis of 105 publicly available digital story videos from Alberta Health Services (AHS). We aim to (1) map representations of cumulative exposures, critical periods, and transitions across stories spanning childhood

Content analysis of substance use disorder recovery discourse on Twitter: From personal recovery narratives to marketing of addiction treatment.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a prodigious public health issue characterized by a substantial treatment gap. Despite challenges, millions have resolved a prior significant alcohol or drug problem, increasingly using online supports as a part of their recovery efforts (e.g., virtual mutual-help group meetings, traditional social networking sites [SNS]). However, the content surrounding SUD recovery-related discussion on SNS such as Twitter remains largely unexamined. To fill this gap, we explored public tweets using SUD recovery-related hashtags. METHODS: From January 1, 2022, to

'But you don't look sick:' hypothyroid narratives shared on Instagram.

BACKGROUND: This study focused on how narratives with hypothyroidism are rhetorically constructed in online spaces, specifically, on Instagram. Currently, hypothyroid patients represent the majority of the approximately 20 million Americans with thyroid disease, and the use of Instagram as a platform allows for unique, multimodal rhetorical constructions that focus on visual narratives and reveal how thyroid patients understand themselves, their condition, and their standing in institutional settings. METHODS: Using a phenomenological approach, five public Instagram accounts owned and maintai

Comparative Analysis of 16 Aging Concepts and Their Influence on Aging Narratives: Bibliometric and Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Globally, various aging concepts (such as healthy aging, successful aging, and active aging) have emerged to promote the goal of "aging well" and have gained widespread attention in academia, policy, and practice to change the negative narrative on aging. However, whether and how these aging concepts have contributed to changing the negative narratives remains unclear. Moreover, they are not clearly defined nor widely agreed upon, often creating ambiguity and confusion. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review and comparative analysis of 16 aging concepts, with

Narrative identity disturbances in psychopathology: An ecologically valid transdiagnostic framework.

This article presents an ecologically valid transdiagnostic framework regarding narrative identity disturbances in psychopathology. Problems with self and identity are distressing, disruptive to everyday functioning, and central to theoretical models of recovery. Yet these problems are sorely understudied, in part due to differences in concepts, theories, and measurement models across disorder-specific literatures. Disorder-specific theories are useful for understanding the etiology of disturbances to self and identity. However, while root causes may vary across disorders, their effects on exp

A systematic review and narrative synthesis of indirect psychological intervention in acute mental health inpatient settings.

OBJECTIVES: Psychologists frequently deliver indirect psychological interventions in mental health inpatient settings to support staff to reflect upon and improve their clinical practice. However, research into these interventions is sparse. Therefore, this study aimed to undertake a systematic review and narrative synthesis of the indirect psychological interventions used in mental health inpatient settings. METHODS: MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Embase were searched for eligible studies and forward-citation searching was undertaken. A narrative synthesis was undertaken to synthesize results. The qu

In Love With the Virus: Reducing Harms, Promoting Dignity, and Preventing Hepatitis C Through Graphic Narratives.

This article describes a process of creating an ethnographic comic about injection drug use and hepatitis C, based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Norway. The project and the graphic publication titled The Virus were a collaboration between a social anthropologist, a graphic artist, and individuals who inject illegal drugs and are aimed at reducing bodily, social, and narrative harms related to drug use. The article argues that structurally informed interventions, such as this project, which account for the social, economic, and epistemological inequalities, benefit from taking phenomen

"It just went wrong, as bodies are prone to do": Graphic Medicine and the Trauma of Miscarriage.

The conspicuous absence of personal articulations of miscarriage in mainstream discourses attests to the stigmatised nature of the experience. Notably, there exists a growing body of infertility comics which foreground the authors' lived realities of miscarriage. In a close reading of select graphic memoirs such as Jenell Johnson's Present/Perfect, Paula Knight's The Facts of Life, Phoebe Potts' Good Eggs, and Diane Noomin's Baby Talk, this article examines how the authors use comics to foreground their predicament. In so doing, the essay argues that these narratives attempt to accord a cultur

The Gentleman Vanishes: Dementia, Caretaking and the Life of the Mind.

This essay recounts the author's journey with her father during his prolonged decline due to dementia. The experience pushed her to break out of the confines of conventional scholarly research in her academic field of architectural history to a multi-disciplinary consideration of nineteenth-century environmental, sensory and horticultural therapies for the mentally ill. During her father's illness, she discovered the tangible therapeutic benefits of momentary engagements with his environment through his five senses and through the emotional filter of poetry. This reorientation to sensory and p

Generating Alzheimer's narratives using large language models.

BACKGROUND: Analyzing semi-spontaneous speech is a promising direction for supporting Alzheimer's disease (AD) assessment, yet progress is limited by the scarcity of annotated clinical data. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer new opportunities to generate synthetic narratives that may resemble speech patterns of both patients with AD and healthy controls during cognitive evaluation tasks such as the Cookie Theft Picture description. METHODS: This study evaluates whether models including GPT, T5/Flan-T5, LLaMA, Mistral, and Qwen can generate clinically plausible picture-description narratives

Active linking through narratives facilitates associative inference.

In daily life, we often draw inferences about novel associations from prior experiences. This ability, associative inference, is thought to be a key process by which memory guides future behavior. Prior studies have typically instructed participants to use narratives or mental imagery to aid memory of object associations. However, these studies have not explicitly tested the role of narratives, leaving an important question: how crucial are narratives in associative inference, and what role might they play? We used a modified associative inference paradigm to answer these questions. Our design

The Box: A Message from the Heart in 55 Words.

This edition of Poet's Pen reflects on "The Box," a 55-word story by Dr. James Huntley, an Oxford- and Cambridge-educated orthopedic surgeon with a passion for narrative medicine. He uses this piece to describe the mysteries of the heart and expertly showcases the effectiveness of this format in connecting physicians to their patients through the traditions of medicine. Created in 1986, 55-word stories are now in their 40th year as a distinct category of writing. Their use has been increasingly associated with the medical humanities, particularly as a means of reflecting on the physician-patie

Decision-Making and Revision Behavior in Chinese-to-English Translation: Evidence from English Majors Translating China-Focused Narratives.

As China-focused narratives increasingly enter international circulation, Chinese-to-English translation has become a site of meaning negotiation rather than a straightforward linguistic transfer. For student translators, the primary challenge extends beyond lexical selection; it involves deciding how to render culturally saturated references, evaluative stances, and narrative positioning for readers outside the source context. This study examines the real-time decision-making and revision behaviors of 72 English majors translating China-focused narratives. Using a process-product design, the

Post-biographical dignity in the age of artificial intelligence: Narrative, ePROMs and ethical challenges in end-of-life care.

OBJECTIVES: The growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and patient-reported digital tools (ePROMs and ePREMs) in palliative care offers new opportunities for personalised care yet also raises profound ethical and philosophical concerns. This paper examines how emerging technologies intersect with the concept of human dignity at the end of life, proposing an expanded notion of post-biographical dignity. METHODS: Ethical-philosophical analysis based on critical readings of AI ethics, narrative medicine, and the philosophy of technology. RESULTS: While digital tools such as ePROMs
