Oncologic pitfalls and mimics in the abdomen and pelvis.

Oncological imaging in the abdomen and pelvis can be complex. Several imaging pitfalls and mimics of oncology can create diagnostic uncertainty. A pitfall is a malignancy that is missed, either not visualized or misdiagnosed as a benign finding. A mimic is a benign entity that is misinterpreted as malignancy. This article will provide a case-based review with teaching tips to avoid various oncologic pitfalls and mimics in the abdomen and pelvis. The categories of pitfalls to be reviewed include spontaneous regression of primary malignancy, neoplasms resembling benign entities, eye-catching ben

Idiopathic trigeminal neuropathy with trigeminal mass lesion on MRI: Neoplasm or not?

The objective of the present study was to investigate clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of idiopathic trigeminal neuropathy with transient MR abnormalities mimicking a neoplasm (ITNmn). We retrospectively evaluated clinical and MRI features in two cases of ITNmn seen in our institution in comparison with those of previously reported five cases. The most common symptom was altered facial sensation and numbness limited to one or more trigeminal nerve divisions (100%). ITNmn commonly affected not only the second and third divisions (86% and 57%, respectively) but also the fir

Pregnancy luteomas: clinical presentations and management strategies.

UNLABELLED: Pregnancy luteomas are rare, benign, neoplasms of the ovary thought to be caused by the hormonal effects of pregnancy. They are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally during imaging or surgery. However, they may present with virilization of the mother or infant or cause complications due to a mass effect or hemorrhage secondary to torsion. Luteomas spontaneously regress postpartum. We present a case of a woman with the classic presentation of a pregnancy luteoma and the common challenges of subsequent management. Pregnancy luteomas present a diagnostic and management challenge

Spontaneous regression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia to a monoclonal B-lymphocytosis or to a normal phenotype.

Spontaneous remission of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is an unusual and poorly characterized event. We performed a search for spontaneous remission in patients with CLL. Cases must have had a pathological diagnosis of CLL with disease duration > 6 months. Spontaneous remission was defined as absence of lymphadenopathy or splenomegaly with lymphocyte counts < 5 × 10(9)/L for > 9 months without therapy. We identified 20 cases and included one additional case from our institution. Fourteen cases (67%) showed remission into monoclonal B lymphocytosis (MBL) and seven (33%) into a normal pheno

[Spontaneous remission of congenital leukemia cutis].

BACKGROUND: Aleukaemic leukaemia--without blasts in the blood or the bone marrow--with isolated cutaneous manifestations has been very rarely reported since only seven patients have been described to date. The prognosis is variable, and the indications for an aggressive treatment such as polychemotherapy are currently unclear. We report a case of spontaneously remitting aleukaemic leukaemia in a newborn child and compare it with other cases in the literature. CASE REPORT: A male newborn presented diffuse, violaceous skin nodules reminiscent of the so-called "blueberry muffin syndrome" present

From the archives of the AFIP: Pediatric orbit tumors and tumorlike lesions: nonosseous lesions of the extraocular orbit.

The histologic spectrum of nonosseous tumors and tumorlike lesions of the extraocular orbit in children differs from that in adults, and the appearance of these lesions at imaging reflects their pathologic features. Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common extraocular orbital tumor in children. This neoplasm usually manifests in young children, grows quite rapidly, and is fairly vascular. Vasculogenic lesions are common orbital lesions in newborns and young infants. The most prevalent of these are infantile hemangioma, a true neoplasm, and venous-lymphatic malformation, a developmental anomaly. Hem

Spontaneously resolved invasive conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma with anterior chamber invasion in low-grade lymphoma patient.

PURPOSE: To report a case of invasive conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with anterior chamber invasion that resolved spontaneously after incisional biopsy and anterior chamber paracentesis in the absence of any treatment. OBSERVATIONS: A 76-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of a recurrent mass in the right eye. Examination showed an elevated, smooth amorphous lesion at the nasal conjunctivae, adherent to the scleral surface. There was also a pseudohypopyon at the angle adjacent to the lesion. Incisional biopsy of the right conjunctival lesion and intracameral fine-needle

Spontaneous regression of testicular germ cell tumors: an analysis of 42 cases.

Spontaneous regression of testicular germ cell tumors (GCTs) is a well-recognized phenomenon but has been incompletely characterized. Many pathologists are not familiar with the findings that support a diagnosis of a "burnt-out" primary in a patient with metastatic GCT. We therefore report the clinical, gross, and histologic findings in 42 cases of testicular GCT that showed either complete (26) or greater than 50% scarring (16). Thirty-seven patients (88%) had either known GCT metastasis or some residual testicular GCT, and none had treatment before orchiectomy. The patients were 17 to 67 yea

The Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Skeletal Metastasis Register. Survival after surgery for bone metastases in the pelvis and extremities.

INTRODUCTION: The assessment of the prognosis for the individual patient is important for the choice of surgical treatment of skeletal metastases. In 1999 the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group (SSG) initiated the Skeletal Metastasis Register as a multicentric, prospective study to provide a scientific basis for treatment recommendations. To improve prognostication we analyzed the survival of patients with skeletal metastases surgically treated at 9 SSG centres. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 460 patients with an average age of 64 years underwent 501 operations for non-spinal skeletal metastases. 7% were oper

Regression of metastatic carcinoid tumor after valvular surgery for carcinoid heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The carcinoid syndrome is a common sequela in patients with carcinoid tumor metastatic to the liver. Cardiac involvement occurs in 19-56% of patients with symptomatic carcinoid syndrome and, in some patients, leads to valvular surgery to relieve symptoms due to progressive right-sided heart failure. Reports of these patients have emphasized amelioration of cardiac symptoms, but postoperative tumor status rarely has been discussed. METHODS: This report describes four patients who underwent valvular heart surgery for severe carcinoid heart disease and had regression of their metasta

Microphotometric nuclear DNA analysis in cervical dysplasia of the uterine cervix: its relation to the progression to malignancy and regression to normalcy.

The present study was attempted to reveal the predictive value of DNA ploidy pattern of uterine cervical dysplasia cases in relation to cervical carcinogenesis. Microphotometric nuclear DNA analysis using Feulgen stain was carried out in 310 cervical smears of 80 dysplasia cases consisting of 53 cases which progressed to malignancy and 27 cases which regressed to inflammation or normalcy during their follow-up periods. Aneuploid DNA pattern was observed in initial as well as follow-up smears in 69.8% of cases of the progressive group, and in 7.4% of cases of the regressive group. This differen

A case of multiple advanced colon cancers with spontaneous regression of only one lesion after biopsy: a case report and literature review.

A 90-year-old man underwent a colonoscopy due to abdominal distension, revealing half-circumferential Type 2 advanced cancers in the ascending and transverse colon. No distant metastasis was detected, and 3 months later, laparoscopic extended right hemicolectomy was performed for both lesions. Pathological examination revealed ulcers and mucus retention in the ascending colon lesion without tumor components. A small number of signet ring cell-like tumor cells were found in the regional lymph node of the ascending colon, while well-to-moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma was observe

Immuno-oncologic profiling by stage-dependent transcriptome and proteome analyses of spontaneously regressing canine cutaneous histiocytoma.

Canine cutaneous histiocytoma (CCH) is a tumor that originates from dermal Langerhans cells and affects particularly young dogs. The common spontaneous regression of CCH makes it an interesting model in comparative oncology research. Previous studies have indicated that anti-tumor immune responses may be involved, but details remain speculative to date. Here, we asked which specific immuno-oncological dynamics underlie spontaneous regression of CCH on mRNA and protein levels. QuantSeq 3' mRNA sequencing with functional over-representation analysis and an nCounter RNA hybridization assay were e

Regression of a vaginal leiomyoma after ovariohysterectomy in a dog: a case report.

An 11 yr old female mixed-breed Siberian husky was presented with a history of sanguineous vaginal discharge, swelling of the perineal area, decreased appetite, and lethargy. A single, large vaginal leiomyoma and multiple mammary tumors were diagnosed. Mastectomy and ovariohysterectomy were performed. The vaginal leiomyoma regressed completely after ovariohysterectomy. This is the first reported case of spontaneous regression of a vaginal leiomyoma after ovariohysterectomy in a dog.

Disappearance of Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma after Treatment of a Borderline Brenner Tumor: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Brenner tumors are relatively rare ovarian neoplasms with very few reported cases associating these tumors and urothelial carcinomas with different characteristics and particularities. CASE REPORT: We report an unusual clinical case of borderline unilateral Brenner tumor of the ovary associated with a highly recurrent diffuse low-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma of the upper and lower urinary tract. The patient received a total cystectomy and resection of the Brenner tumor. Her clinical response was marked by the absence of recurrence of the urothelial carcinoma and the disapp

Pregnancy-associated progression with spontaneous postpartum regression in metastatic alveolar soft part sarcoma.

We report the case of a woman with metastatic alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) who experienced pregnancy-associated disease progression followed by unexpected postpartum regression. Pulmonary lesions increased in size after a miscarriage and during a subsequent pregnancy, prompting consideration for systemic treatment and potential enrolment in a clinical trial evaluating a tyrosine kinase inhibitor in combination with an immune checkpoint inhibitor. However, baseline staging CT performed a few weeks postpartum unexpectedly demonstrated marked spontaneous regression. Because trial enrolment r
