[Recurrence of a Desmoid Tumour in a Scar at the Donor Site of a Latissimus Dorsi Flap].

A desmoid tumour, also known as aggressive fibrous tumour or desmoid fibromatosis, is a rare, benign tumour originating from connective tissue cells. Desmoid tumours account for approximately 0.03+% of all neoplasms and less than 3+% of all soft tissue tumours. The estimated incidence in the general population is 2 to 4 cases per million people per year [1]. Desmoid tumours are characterised by aggressive growth but typically do not metastasize. They often occur in young adults and preferably affect specific body regions such as the abdomen, shoulder, chest, or extremities. The exact cause of

Perineal hernia repair using an autologous tunica vaginalis communis in nine intact male dogs.

Perineal hernia in dogs is very problematic and mostly requires surgical reconstruction of the weak pelvic diaphragm. Tissue or synthetic grafts have been used for the correction after failure of the conventional herniorrhaphy. Aim of this clinical trial was to assess the possible use of the autologous tunica vaginalis communis as a free graft for perineal hernia repair in intact male dogs. Seven unilateral and 2 bilateral perineal hernias in nine intact male dogs free from testicular and scrotal neoplasms were included in this study. The median surgical time for unilateral herniorrhaphy was 7

Treatment and Diagnose of Spinal Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor: A Case Report and a Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Spinal phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare disorder but can be cured once the diagnosis is clear and a complete removal by surgery is performed. To the best of our knowledge, only 22 cases in the spine have been described, and we report a case with the largest number of spinal segments (T12-L5) affected among spine PMT cases. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed until May 23, 2023, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews guidelines. Studies were chosen through relevant PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE searches to prioritize o

Malignant Gastrointestinal Neuroectodermal Tumor of Small Intestine Showing DOG1 Expression: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET), also referred to as clear cell sarcoma-like tumor of the GI tract is a rare mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. It has to be distinguished from various mimickers including gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) due to its aggressive course and different natural history and therapeutic approach. Here we report a case of GNET arising in the small intestine with aberrant DOG1 expression posing a diagnostic challenge. In this context, the combination of clinical, histomorphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features hel

Trichilemmal carcinoma of the scalp.

This report describes the case of an 86-year-old male who presented with a large scalp tumour. Imaging revealed a large vertex mass, without intracranial extension, and multiple nodular subcapsular hepatic lesions suspected to be secondary in nature. Surgical resection was performed. Pathological examination revealed an adnexal carcinoma of follicular origin, thus a trichilemmal carcinoma. Controlled wound healing (budding of the diploë) was completely successful within 12 months. The patient refused the assessment and treatment of his metastases.

Oncogenic osteomalacia caused by phosphaturic mesenchymal tumours in the proximal and shaft of the tibia: a case report.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is caused by a small mesenchymal tumour characterised by phosphaturia, hypophosphatemia, decreased serum vitamin D3 level, and osteomalacia. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour of the mixed connective tissue type (PMTMCT) is the commonest subtype and usually involves a single site. We report a case of PMTMCT involving the left proximal and shaft of the tibia in a 42-year-old man.

Benign and low grade variants of mixed Müllerian tumour of the uterus.

The clinico-pathological features of 11 examples of a rare group of uterine neoplasms composed of both epithelial and stromal components are reported. The patients complained of abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge. Two of the tumours arose in the cervix, seven in the endometrium and two from both, forming large polypoid masses projecting from the cervix and/or filling the uterine cavity. Microscopically, the epithelial elements ranged from benign to adenocarcinoma. A similar range of stromal elements was also seen, varying from entirely bland to low grade to high grade sarcoma. The variable

Cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases of adenocarcinoma of the colon and rectum.

INTRODUCTION: The interesting topic of cutaneous and subcutaneous metastasis from rectal carcinoma is discussed using 3 cases. CLINICAL PICTURE: The first case was a 70-year-old man with T3N2M0 rectal mucinous adenocarcinoma, who developed an inflammatory subcutaneous metastasis at the left scapula 2 years after anterior resection. The second case was a 51-year-old man with T4N2M0 splenic flexure mucinous adenocarcinoma, who developed metastatic disease including a subcutaneous secondary to the back. The third case was a 53-year-old woman who developed vulval recurrence 10 months after abdomi

Ulcerated dystrophic calcinosis cutis secondary to localised linear scleroderma.

Dystrophic calcinosis is a more common form of calcinosis cutis; calcium salts are deposited secondary to local inflammation, tissue damage and degeneration. Various conditions can cause dystrophic calcinosis, including connective tissue disease, infection, inflammatory processes, chronic venous stasis, cutaneous neoplasm and trauma. We report a case of ulcerated cutaneous calcinosis associated with a localised linear scleroderma or morphea. Healing of the ulcerations took place after four months of treatment with colchicine 1 mg per day.

Elastofibromatous changes in giant cell fibroma and amalgam tattoo: Unusual findings in common oral lesions.

Several cases of elastofibromatous lesion affecting the oral mucosa have been reported. Clinically, these lesions may appear as small exophytic lesions or less often as white lesions. Therefore, fibrous hyperplasia and leukoplakia are not uncommonly considered in clinical differential diagnosis. Microscopically, elastic and fibrous connective tissue deposition is seen. Rarely, elastofibromatous changes can be detected when assessing intraoral lesions, including cysts, salivary gland neoplasms, and epithelial dysplasia. Here we report two oral lesions showing elastofibromatous changes, expandin

[Abdominal wall repair after total resection of desmoid fibroma in a patient with diabetes mellitus type 1].

Desmoid fibroma (DF) is a rare connective tissue tumor comprising about 0.03-0.13% of all neoplasms. DF has a low potential for malignant transformation, but it is characterized by aggressive course and unfavorable prognosis. The main contingent of patients consists of women of reproductive age. Despite the nearly two-century history of study, there are certain unsolved problems including endocrine problems associated with this disease. We report a 30-year-old female with DF and diabetes mellitus type 1. Total resection of the affected right rectus abdominis muscle was performed in a single bl

Case report and literature review: cardiac tamponade as a complication of pericardial extramedullary hematopoiesis.

Pericardial effusion can cause cardiac tamponade physiology with resultant cardiogenic shock and death. Myelofibrosis, the replacement of marrow cavity by fibrous connective tissue, is a secondary complication of a group of disorders known as myeloproliferative neoplasms, which are clonal processes characterized by abnormal proliferative growth of one or more hematopoietic lineages. One consequence of myelofibrosis is the development of hematopoiesis at other anatomic sites, most commonly the spleen and liver, a phenomenon known as extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). Herein we report a case of

A case-control study of prosthetic implants and selected chronic diseases.

We examined the association between prosthetic nonbreast implants and selected malignant neoplasms, connective tissue disorders, and neurologic diseases. We conducted a case-control study from an insurance claims database. We selected controls who had diseases for which no association with implants have been claimed or reported. Data were analyzed using both tabular and polytomous regression analysis methods, including methods to account for the large number of comparisons. All analyses exhibited positive associations between implants (both silicone and metal) and neurologic conditions, especi…

[Histological findings on the relation between elastosis and breast neoplasms and dysplasia].

Connective tissue changes with particular reference to elastosis in malignant and dysplastic breasts are studied. Hyperelastosis was closely associated with carcinoma particular with scirrhous type also in the perineoplastic area; on the contrary the percentage of the phenomena in benign displastic disease is significantly low. Elastosis was located around carcinomatous tissue, mammary neoplastic ducts and also around veins and as scattered foci in the stroma. The site of production of elastic fibers is discussed. Elastosis accompanying carcinoma is considered more than a simple association bu

Mesenchymal tumours of the thorax: CT findings and pathological features.

Mesenchymal tumours of the thorax are uncommon and may originate from the muscle, bone, cartilage, vessel, nerves, fat and fibrous tissue. These tumours occur at different sites including the lung, pleura, mediastinum or chest wall. Mesenchymal tumours tend to show protean and non-specific imaging characteristics. However, in some instances, the imaging characteristics of the tumour may allow a specific diagnosis to be made, such as with lipoid or vascular tumours.

Musculoskeletal syndromes associated with malignancy.

Evidence has been presented supporting a causal relationship between malignancies and musculoskeletal syndromes. This discussion has dealt primarily with lesser known relationships, more common associations such as hypertrophic osteoarthropathy and dermatomyositis being reviewed elsewhere. The ones discussed herein closely mimic primary connective tissue diseases and offer an insight into the study of the pathogenesis of these primary diseases. In view of the natural history of malignant disease, the hope for such patients arises from the physicians early diagnosis and treatment of the underly

[Diagnostic strategy and differential therapeutic approach for cystic lesions of the pancreas].

CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE: Cystic pancreatic lesions (CPL) are diagnosed with increasing frequency. Because up to 60% of CPL are classified as malignant or premalignant, every CPL should be fully investigated and clarified. Serous CPL with low risk of malignancy must be differentiated from mucinous CPL with relevant potential malignancy (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm IPMN) and mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) as well as from harmless pseudocysts. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: Cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial ro

Endobronchial solitary fibrous tumors: An enigma for diagnosis.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms constituting less than 2% of all soft tissue tumors. They typically originate in the thoracic cavity, mainly in the pleura, but can also occur in other various sites such as lung parenchyma, pericardium, and bronchus. In this study, a 49-year-old non-smoking female with a history of allergies presented to our pulmonary clinic with a chronic cough. An explorative bronchoscopy revealed an intrabronchial mass in the left superior bronchi, and a 68 Ga-DOTATOC positron emission computed tomography suggested a carcinoid tumor. Subsequent

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor: A chondromyxoid fibroma-like type.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare neoplasm that causes tumor-induced osteomalasia (TIO) in most affected patients, usually through the production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). This tumor is often misdiagnosed due to its relative rarity and its widely varied histomorphologic spectrum. Here we describe a case of a 78-year-old woman who presented with a left middle tumor without symptoms of TIO. The histological features resembled chondromyxoid fibroma with smudgy calcification in the tumor matrix. In addition, we evaluated FGF23 expression through immunohistochemical study
