Five case histories of patients with fibrous inflammatory polyps of the ileocecum are reported. Clinical impression in all five cases was that these tumefactions represented gastrointestinal malignancies. Gross pathologic examination revealed polypoid intramural growths ranging from 2.5 to 7.0 cm in greatest dimension. Transmural desmoplasia through the bowel wall into subserosal fat was initially thought to be indicative of neoplastic invasion. Microscopic evaluation revealed a fibroblastic and vascular proliferative process. Pseudosarcomatous changes were identified in cellular fibroblastic

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are infrequent neoplasms of mesenchymal origin that are thought to arise from the submesothelial connective tissue and usually have a benign behavior. However, a small proportion of these tumors may recur or metastasize after surgical treatment, especially when they are associated with malignant morphological and histopathological features.
CLINICAL CASES: Two female patients of 56 and 50 years of age who underwent surgical treatment for malignant solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura. The first patient was asymptomatic, whereas the second suf

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma is a rare soft tissue tumor usually found in young adults, predominantly males. Fibrous dysplasia is a common benign bone tumor, which accounts for 5~7 % of all the primary benign bone tumors. However, pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma secondary to fibrous dysplasia is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma secondary to fibrous dysplasia.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study describes a case of a 14-year-old female who suffered from pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma secondary to f

Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (MCs) are rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasms of the head and neck region. They originate either primarily from preexisting cartilage or secondarily from Paget's disease and fibrous dysplasia. In the head and neck region, the larynx, maxilla, and nasal cavity are the most common sites. Mandibular chondrosarcoma is quite rare. On CT scan, it appears as a lobulated mass containing a chondroid matrix. Adequate tissue sampling is essential for accurate histopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis to avoid misdiagnosis with its mimickers. The prognosis of MC is c

Meningiomas are the most common primary cranial tumor arising in the central nervous system and its coverings, constituting 35.5% of primary brain tumors. Schwannomas account for 8.3% of primary neoplasms of the central nervous system. Occasionally these tumors can show overlapping morphology, most conspicuously in the fibrous variant of meningioma. In such cases, immunohistochemistry can help to establish a definitive diagnosis. Currently S100 is the most commonly used immunohistochemical stain to show neural crest differentiation in tumors. This may lead to potential misclassification of men

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare fibrous neoplasms. Since their initial description as arising from the pleura, SFTs have been reported at a wide range of anatomic sites. To the authors's knowledge, there are no large series reporting both thoracic and extrathoracic SFTs nor are there any large series that analyze clinicopathologic correlates of tumor behavior.
METHODS: Institutional soft tissue tumor and pathology databases were reviewed to identify patients. Pathologic material was reviewed by an experienced soft tissue pathologist and scored for the presence of a histolo

INTRODUCTION: The tissues of the laryngeal region only rarely harbor primary cartilaginous lesions, and squamous cell carcinoma remains the most frequently encountered malignant tumor in this area.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the salient histological features of cartilaginous laryngeal lesions to provide differential diagnostics and guidelines for distinguishing the benign from the malignant ones.
RESULTS: Cartilaginous neoplasms of the larynx include chondroma and chondrosarcoma. Among the overarching group of all forms of laryngeal sarcoma, chondrosarcoma forms the most common entit

BACKGROUND: Resection of tracheal tumors is particularly challenging when the neoplasm involves the carina or is located in close proximity. We reviewed our experience with 22 tracheal resections for tumor.
METHODS: In this retrospective review, adenoid cystic carcinoma was diagnosed in 13 patients, squamous cell carcinoma in 5, typical carcinoid in 2, and leiomyoma and benign fibrous histiocytoma, in 1 each. There were 19 segmental resections with direct anastomosis, and 3 complex resections in which the carina was involved.
RESULTS: One patient with tumor in the trachea and left main bronc

Aims. Histopathologic benign mimickers of prostate cancer have mostly focused on glandular mimics, with non-glandular mimics mainly limited to inflammatory conditions. While there is a paucity of literature recognizing small cystic (presumably artifactual) spaces in transurethral resection specimens, in some instances they can become florid enough to mimic vascular or epithelial neoplasms. Herein, we detailed histologic, immunophenotypic, and clinicopathologic findings in a large series of specimens showing prominent diagnostically confounding cystic spaces. Methods and Results. Sixty specimen

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that is primarily found in the lungs but can be found in other locations such as the retroperitoneum, deep soft tissues of the proximal extremities, abdominal cavity, head, and neck. Moreover, SFTs found in the breast are extremely rare and, oftentimes, are found incidentally during screening mammography. Our case presents an exceptionally rare occurrence of a SFT in the breast of a 40-year-old woman. This rarity is underscored by its classification as a SFT and its unusual location within the breast tissue as well as this p

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that occurs preferentially in the pleura. Although it has been described at some extrathoracic sites, its occurrence in the female genital tract is extremely rare. We are the first to report on an unusual case of a large (14cm in the largest diameter) SFT localized in the broad ligament of the uterus in a 50-year-old woman. The patient underwent surgical tumor extirpation and has remained well without any sign of local tumor recurrence after 6 years of follow-up. We discuss the clinical aspects, the gross macroscopic appearance, the hist

Mesenchymal tumors of the prostate are rare but often cause considerable diagnostic difficulty when encountered. These may be either benign or malignant and can arise within the prostate gland or in adjacent tissues. This review covers prostatic stromal proliferations (prostatic stromal tumor of uncertain malignant potential and stromal sarcoma), solitary fibrous tumor, myofibroblastic proliferations, smooth muscle neoplasms (leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma), gastrointestinal stromal tumor, schwannoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, sarcomatoid carcinoma, postradiation sarcoma, and mixed epithelial stromal tu

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a dermal spindle-cell sarcoma that is considered a superficial and clinically benign presentation of pleomorphic dermal sarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. AFX appears clinically as a discrete red or pink nodule or papule, most commonly on the head and neck region of sun-damaged elderly patients. Histologic findings on routine hematoxylin and eosin staining reveal spindle-shaped, large, and pleomorphic tumor cells throughout the dermis. Immunohistochemistry is not specific for AFX, and the diagnosis is generally one

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm that has been documented at a variety of anatomic sites. The most common gastrointestinal sites include the stomach, small intestine, and colon, with only 2 examples reported in the pancreatic body. Herein, we report the first example of CFT involving the pancreatic head and review the literature of previous case reports of CFT in the pancreas. Furthermore, we discuss pathogenesis, histological features, ancillary testing, differential diagnosis, and prognosis of CFT.

Benign stromal tumors of the breast are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that have significant clinical and morphologic overlap. We report the case of a spindle cell tumor occurring in the mammary gland with mixed features of solitary fibrous tumor and mammary myofibroblastoma. The significance of this finding as well as the pathologic and radiologic diagnostic strategies used to differentiate these two lesions are presented based on a review of pertinent literature.

A 68-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for further examination of abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. Needle biopsy could not establish pathological diagnosis. Three years later, chest computed tomography (CT) revealed the tumor was enlarged. We suspected it was a malignant tumor, and resected by video-assisted thoracoscopy. The tumor occurred from the right middle lobe, and intraoperative diagnosis was malignant tumor. We added middle lobectomy. Histological examination revealed that tumor was malignant solitary fibrous tumor.

We are reporting a giant pelvic neoplasm, a rare solitary fibrous tumor that presented with a large bowel obstruction and bilateral ureteral obstruction because of its size and location. Preoperative diagnosis required complex pathological studies to exclude a high-grade sarcoma suspected clinically. Complete resection was required for resolution of obstructive symptoms. Prognosis for solitary fibrous tumors is usually good after complete resection. Recurrence and metastasis may be related to rare aggressive histological features, including nuclear atypia, hypercellularity, greater than four m

Central nervous system solitary fibrous tumors are a new pathological entity. To our knowledge, only 60 meningeal solitary fibrous tumors both in the spinal cord and in the brain have been described in the literature. The 56 previously reported cases of meningeal solitary fibrous tumors are critically reviewed. In addition, we report four new cases of solitary fibrous tumors of the meninges. There is a slight male prepoderance. Meningeal solitary fibrous tumors show a tendency to arise in the posterior fossa (26%) and spine (25%). The treatment was mainly total surgical excision. Radiotherapy

Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) is a rare benign neoplasm primarily associated with the pleura. However, it has also been identified in diverse locations, including the skin, deep soft tissues, genitourinary system, gastrointestinal tract, and the head and neck region, including the oral cavity. There is no gender predilection for SFT of the oral cavity and it can occur at any age. We herein present a case of SFT on the lower lip of a 19-year-old male patient and describe our diagnostic approach. The histopathological findings showed typical features of SFT with immunoexpression of CD34, CD99, BC

Hemangioblastoma is a rare neoplasm occurred in soft tissue. Herein, we present an intriguing case of sporadic hemangioblastoma in the retroperitoneum occurring in a 59-year-old male. The tumor was characterized by an alternation of cellular and paucicellular areas surrounded by a thick fibrous capsule. The stromal cells showed a pale cytoplasm exhibiting occasional lipid droplets and hyperchromatic, irregularly nuclei. CD56, NSE, a-inhibin and S100 were positive in tumor cells. This is the third reported case of a hemangioblastoma in the retroperitoneum. Based on clinical examination, compute
