Smart cellular bricks for decentralized shape classification and damage recovery.

Biological systems possess remarkable capabilities for self-recognition and morphological regeneration, often relying solely on local interactions. Inspired by these decentralized processes, we present a novel system of physical 3D bricks-simple cubic units equipped with local communication, processing, and sensing-that are capable of inferring their global shape class and detecting structural damage. Leveraging Neural Cellular Automata, a learned, fully-distributed algorithm, our system enables each module to independently execute the same neural network without access to any global state or

HSFF-Net: Hierarchical spectral-feature fusion network for deepfake detection and localization.

The rapid development of deepfake techniques poses a serious threat to multimedia authenticity, driving increased attention to deepfake detection. However, most existing methods focus solely on classification while overlooking forgery localization, which is essential for understanding manipulation intent. To address this issue, we propose a novel Hierarchical Spectral-Feature Fusion Network (HSFF-Net) for deepfake detection and localization from spatial- and frequency-domain views. Specifically, the Spectral Detail Amplification (SDA) module enhances tampering cues around facial features in th

Transferable Neural Network Potentials and Condensed Phase Properties.

Transferable neural network potentials (NNP) are undergoing rapid development. Many practical applications of NNPs focus on single molecules; e.g., using NNPs as a fast replacement for quantum chemical methods for dihedral angle scans in force field development. Similarly, the reference data on which most transferable NNPs have been trained are single molecule properties. As NNPs are beginning to be used to simulate more complex systems, such as solute-solvent simulations, the question arises whether the current generation of transferable NNPs is accurate enough to reproduce condensed phase pr

A real-time arbitrary-shape text detector.

It is challenging to detect arbitrary-shape text accurately and effectively in natural scenes. While many methods have been implemented for arbitrary-shape text detection, most cannot achieve real-time detection or meet practical needs. In this work, we propose a YOLOv6-based detector that can effectively implement arbitrary-shape text detection and achieve real-time detection. We include two additional branches in the neck part of the YOLOv6 network to adapt the network to text detection, and the output side uses the pixel aggregation (PA) algorithm to decouple the PA output to use it as the

Towards evaluating the robustness of deep diagnostic models by adversarial attack.

Deep learning models (with neural networks) have been widely used in challenging tasks such as computer-aided disease diagnosis based on medical images. Recent studies have shown deep diagnostic models may not be robust in the inference process and may pose severe security concerns in clinical practice. Among all the factors that make the model not robust, the most serious one is adversarial examples. The so-called "adversarial example" is a well-designed perturbation that is not easily perceived by humans but results in a false output of deep diagnostic models with high confidence. In this pa

Automatic detection of cell-cycle stages using recurrent neural networks.

Mitosis is the process by which eukaryotic cells divide to produce two similar daughter cells with identical genetic material. Research into the process of mitosis is therefore of critical importance both for the basic understanding of cell biology and for the clinical approach to manifold pathologies resulting from its malfunctioning, including cancer. In this paper, we propose an approach to study mitotic progression automatically using deep learning. We used neural networks to predict different mitosis stages. We extracted video sequences of cells undergoing division and trained a Recurrent

Interpretable local flow attention for multi-step traffic flow prediction.

Traffic flow prediction (TFP) has attracted increasing attention with the development of smart city. In the past few years, neural network-based methods have shown impressive performance for TFP. However, most of previous studies fail to explicitly and effectively model the relationship between inflows and outflows. Consequently, these methods are usually uninterpretable and inaccurate. In this paper, we propose an interpretable local flow attention (LFA) mechanism for TFP, which yields three advantages. (1) LFA is flow-aware. Different from existing works, which blend inflows and outflows in

MixGradient: A gradient-based re-weighting scheme with mixup for imbalanced data streams.

A challenge for contemporary deep neural networks in real-world problems is learning from an imbalanced data stream, where data tends to be received chunk by chunk over time, and the prior class distribution is severely imbalanced. Although many sophisticated algorithms have been derived, most of them overlook the importance of gradient information. From this perspective, the difficulty of learning from imbalanced data streams lies in the fact that the gradient estimated on an uneven class distribution is not informative enough to reflect the critical pattern of each class. To this end, we pro

Dissipativity-Based Synchronization for Switched Discrete-Time-Delayed Neural Networks With Combined Switching Paradigm.

The present study concerns the dissipativity-based synchronization problem for the discrete-time switched neural networks with time-varying delay. Different from some existing research depending on the arbitrary and time-dependent switching mechanisms, all subsystems of the investigated delayed neural networks are permitted to be nondissipative. For reducing the switching frequency, the combined switching paradigm constituted by the time-dependent and state-dependent switching strategies is then constructed. In light of the proposed dwell-time-dependent storage functional, sufficient condition

MG-CNN: A deep CNN to predict saddle points of matrix games.

Finding the saddle point of a matrix game is a classical problem that arises in various fields, e.g., economics, computer science, and engineering. The standard problem-solving methods consist of formulating the problem as a linear program (LP). However, this approach seems less efficient when many instances need to be solved. In this paper, we propose a Convolutional Neural Network based approach, which is able to predict both the strategy profile (x,y) and the optimal value v of the game. We call this approach Matrix Game-Conventional Neural Network or MG-CNN for short. Thanks to a global po

New optimization algorithms for neural network training using operator splitting techniques.

In the following paper we present a new type of optimization algorithms adapted for neural network training. These algorithms are based upon sequential operator splitting technique for some associated dynamical systems. Furthermore, we investigate through numerical simulations the empirical rate of convergence of these iterative schemes toward a local minimum of the loss function, with some suitable choices of the underlying hyper-parameters. We validate the convergence of these optimizers using the results of the accuracy and of the loss function on the MNIST, MNIST-Fashion and CIFAR 10 class

SynerHyper: Predicting Anticancer Drug Synergy for Lung Cancer Using Uni-Mol Enhanced Hypergraph Neural Networks and Multimodal Fusion.

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and combination therapy is an important strategy for improving treatment efficacy and overcoming drug resistance. However, identifying synergistic drug combinations remains challenging because of the large combinatorial search space and the strong dependence of drug responses on cellular context. Here, we present SynerHyper, a multimodal computational framework for lung cancer drug synergy prediction that integrates three-dimensional molecular representations, transcriptomic profiles, hypergraph learning, and ensemble f

Hybrid 1D CNN-BiLSTM with focal loss for robust intrusion detection in in-vehicle CAN networks.

The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus serves as the primary communication framework in modern vehicles, enabling reliable data exchange among Electronic Control Units (ECUs) for seamless interaction. The CAN protocol lacks built-in protection, leaving in-vehicle networks vulnerable to cyberattacks such as denial-of-service, message injection, replay, and suppression. To address these challenges, this study presents a deep learning-based intrusion detection approach that integrates a 1D Convolutional Neural Network (1D CNN) with a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) model, along with f

RTAS-Net: A ResNet-transformer-ASPP semantic segmentation network for remote sensing images.

Semantic segmentation of remote sensing images faces pronounced scale variation and complex class-wise spatial distributions, which often lead to semantic discontinuity in large regions and the loss of fine details for small objects. To address these issues, this paper proposes a U-Net-based remote sensing semantic segmentation network termed RTAS-Net (ResNet-Transformer-ASPP Segmentation Network), which enhances feature representation through a collaborative design of multi-scale context aggregation, fine-scale reinforcement, and local-to-global modeling. At the high-semantic level, the netwo

Interpretable deep neural network identifies robust biomarkers for diseases with mechanistic insights from omics data.

Identifying essential biomarkers remains a core challenge in elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms and achieving precise diagnosis of complex diseases. Deep neural networks offer immense predictive power, yet their lack of interpretability severely limits downstream biological insight. Here, we introduce DeepVaris, an explainable deep learning framework that reframes feature selection as the interpretation of a pretrained convolutional neural network via surrogate modeling. In extensive simulations and real-world datasets, DeepVaris successfully identifies important features and reveals deeper

Gait environments recognition via synaptic convolutional neural network with memory autapses.

Exoskeleton systems face significant challenges in maintaining reliable gait prediction under dynamically changing walking environments. Conventional learning-based methods often suffer from limited adaptability and high computational latency, especially when deployed on low-power embedded hardware. A neuromorphic computing framework based on a synaptic convolutional neural network with memory autapses (SCN-MA) is introduced for real-time gait environment recognition. A structured gait experiment was conducted to collect pneumatic mechanomyography (pMMG) and stretch signals under multiple walk

Utilization of a nonlinear autoregressive neural network with exogenous inputs for foot trajectory generation for upslope terrain.

The rhythm in which robotic prostheses have evolved over the past two decades indicates that they have a promising potential to replace passive prostheses in the foreseeable future. Powered lower limb prostheses, unlike the passive ones, can provide net positive work during the late stance, thus reducing the metabolic cost. Moreover, robotic prostheses can provide different characteristics in compliance with the walking terrains. The conventional three-level controllers of robotic lower limb prostheses are known for their intermittent and nondynamic properties, which limit prosthesis functioni
