Diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) is a rare clinical condition with only about 100 cases reported in the literature. It is characterized by primary hyperplasia of pulmonary neuroendocrine cells (PNECs) which are specialized epithelial cells located throughout the entire respiratory tract, from the trachea to the terminal airways. DIPNECH appears in various forms that include diffuse proliferation of scattered neuroendocrine cells, small nodules, or a linear proliferation. It is usually seen in middle-aged, nonsmoking women with symptoms of cough, dyspnea, a…

Small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma is a well-known aggressive neoplasia, which is usually associated with a poor prognosis. The lung is the most common primary site, but other organs may be involved, especially those of the digestive tract. The authors report the case of a 71-year-old Caucasian, male patient who was admitted because of congestive heart failure and loss of vision accompanied by right proptosis. Skull and sinuses computed tomography showed a tumoral mass involving the posterior region of the right eye, local bones, and paranasal sinuses. Because of severe hemodynamic instabilit

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to describe the imaging appearances of diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) on computed tomography (CT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic medical records were searched for patients with pathology-proven DIPNECH who had a CT available for review. Eleven patients were included.
RESULTS: The most common finding on CT was small pulmonary nodules which were present in all patients and were multiple (≥5) in 7/11 patients. Other CT findings included mosaic pattern attenuation and bronchial wall thickening/bronchiectasis.

Unknown primary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) in the mediastinum is extremely rare. In this report, we present a case of a 53-year-old man with superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome who developed LCNEC in the middle mediastinum. His chief complaint was facial edema. Chest X-ray revealed an abnormal shadow in the right upper mediastinum. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest revealed a 67-mm mass in the middle mediastinum. Tumor invasion caused constriction of the SVC. The patient underwent induction chemoradiotherapy with vinorelbin and cisplatin and concurrent radiation therapy

Neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm that most frequently arises in the lung. Salivary gland involvement is rare, and the parotid is the main gland affected. We describe the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology findings, the immunophenotypical study and the differential diagnosis of a small cell carcinoma that presented in the parotid of a 91-year-old man. The tumour was treated only with radiotherapy and presented a complete response, with no evidence of the disease after three years of follow-up. This is the first case reported in the literature with good outcome afte

Lambert-Eaton syndrome (LES) is an immune-mediated disorder of the presynaptic neuromuscular junction due to the blocking effect of the voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) antibodies. Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is the most common cause of LES. We report an unusual case of LES associated with large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the lung. In this case, clinical symptoms of LES predated the diagnosis of LCNEC by 6 years. After tumor resection, the patient experienced clinical and electrophysiological improvement. In addition, he had a decrease in VGCC antibody titer from 130 to 80

The incidence of cardiac metastases is rising due to increasingly sensitive diagnostic investigations and longer patient survival as a result of improved treatment for malignancies. We report a rare case of right atrial metastasis from a large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma successfully resected with cardiopulmonary bypass. The surgical management of advanced cardiac malignancy is discussed. In appropriately selected cases surgical resection of cardiac metastases can be beneficial, allowing improvement in quality of life, and prolongation of life.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine carcinoma is an aggressive neoplasm that mainly affects elderly Caucasians and typically arises in sun-exposed areas of the skin. The disease is rather rare and only a relatively few cases present with no apparent primary lesion.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an 81-year-old Caucasian male with neuroendocrine carcinoma, which initially presented as a large retroperitoneal mass. Pathological and immunohistochemical analysis of the transabdominal CT-guided biopsy specimen revealed tissue consistent with neuroendocrine carcinoma. The patient underwent explorato

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater is extremely rare. A 55 year old woman presented with an ampullary tumour causing pancreaticobiliary obstruction and a pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. Microscopically, the tumour was diagnosed as a CD117 positive large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma with glandular differentiation. Four months later the patient developed a general recurrence. The metastatic tumours showed CD117 negativity and pure neuroendocrine features. The patient died of disease six months after diagnosis. It is postulated that the two components originated f

The incidence of gastric carcinoid tumours is increasing. This rise is probably due to the number of gastroscopies and improved histological techniques. The majority (65%) of these gastric tumours is associated with chronic atrophic gastritis and pernicious anaemia. In this article two patients are presented, one with pernicious anaemia and gastric neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia and one with pernicious anaemia and multiple gastric carcinoids. These neuroendocrine cell disorders have a relatively favourable prognosis. Therefore, a wait-and-see policy was preferred. The pathogenesis, clinical s

A case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast with Merkel cell carcinoma-like features occurring in a 38-year-old female is described. A 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.3 cm tumor in the upper-outer quadrant of the right breast was ill-defined, yellowish white and rubbery. Microscopically, the tumor was characterized by a diffuse proliferation of non-cohesive round cells. The tumor cells had round nuclei with finely dispersed chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli. The cytoplasm was generally scant, pale to eosinophilic, and argyrophilic. There were scattered foci of small nests or intraductal proliferations.

We studied the distribution of mucosal neuroendocrine (NE) cells in the colon from 13 patients with Hirschsprung's disease (HD) and from 8 c … ve cells in the aganglionic bowel compared with ganglionic bowel (P less than .01). The increase in neuroendocrine cells was found over the entire length of the aganglionic segment in rectosigmoid HD as well as in long-segment HD. These results demonstrating the increased levels of NE cells in the mucosa of aganglionic colon suggest that the NE cells may have a role i …

There is little published information on changes in the appendix in Hirschsprung's disease despite the presence within the mucosa of nerves and neuroendocrine cells together forming a 'neuroendocrine ganglion'. The innervation and neuroendocrine cell population of 11 appendices (two from patients with total colonic aganglionosis, six from patients with short segment Hirschsprung's disease and three normal controls) were examined using H & E, a standard Grimelius silver stain and immunocytochemistry for S-100 protein, neuron-specific enolase, neurofilament and synaptophysin. Compared with both …

Duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (D-NENs) are uncommon tumors that account for a fraction of duodenal tumors. Although often incidentally discovered, those in the ampullary or peri-ampullary regions may present with symptoms due to biliary or gastrointestinal obstruction, including obstruction or bleeding. We describe a 65-year-old male who presented with fatigue, altered mentation, and melena. His evaluation was notable for severe anemia, metabolic derangements, and laboratory findings with concern for tumor lysis syndrome. Emergent management with hemodialysis and supportive care stabilized

Pituitary metastases from pulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) are exceedingly rare but should be considered in patients presenting with arginine vasopressin deficiency and panhypopituitarism in the context of known or suspected metastatic lung cancer. Early recognition and prompt initiation of hormonal replacement therapy are essential to prevent life-threatening endocrine crises and to improve symptom burden. We describe a case of a 43-year-old male who presented with dyspnea, weight loss, and weakness who was found to have metastatic LCNEC involving the liver. Endocrine eva

INTRODUCTION: Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) that arises from the tonsil is a particularly rare head and neck carcinoma. This kind of neoplasm mainly originated from the bronchopulmonary area; however, there were reported cases of extrapulmonary areas. The prognosis is poor as the tumour is an aggressive tumour and have a high risk of metastasis.
CASE REPORT: We experienced a patient presented with painless right neck swelling and hard tonsillar hypertrophy for past six month. Computer tomography showed the tumour extended to the parapharyngeal space and metastasized to the thoraco
