Sclerosing segmental neurofibromatosis.

Segmental neurofibromatosis is a rare disorder characterized by cafe-au-lait macules and/or neurofibromas limited to a single body segment. The neurofibromas in segmental neurofibromatosis are usually soft, non-tender nodules as in other types of neurofibromatosis. Histopathologically, they are usually non-encapsulated, loosely textured dermal tumors. We report a case of sclerosing segmental neurofibromatosis, in which the patient presented with several grouped, erythematous to brownish, firm tender nodules on the left side of the posterior neck. Histopathologically, the stroma was mostly very

Aesthetic aspects of neurofibromatosis reconstruction with the vacuum-assisted closure system.

Everyone agrees that any reconstructive procedure should carry with it the maximum of aesthetic considerations in order that the reconstructive procedure presents the minimal deformities. Vacuum-assisted closure-(VAC) has allowed surgeons to achieve this goal by creating the most optimal conditions for proper wound healing and thus the best aesthetic results. We present a tragic case whereby a 28-year-old Hispanic male patient with neurofibromatosis was treated for a soccer ball-sized tumor located on his upper left leg. The treatment plan consisted of partial excision with local flap coverage

Primary adenocarcinoma of the stomach associated with peripheral neurofibromatosis: report of a case.

A 55-year old man with von Recklinghausen's disease was admitted to our hospital for investigation of weight loss, anorexia, and abdominal discomfort. Endoscopy findings revealed impairment in the extendability of the stomach by air, and barium meal studies showed a well-contracted stomach. On exploratory laparotomy, the whole of the stomach was found to be grossly shrunken with thickening of the walls suggesting a "linitis plastica" stomach. Histological findings confirmed stage III poorly differentiated diffuse infiltrative adenocarcinoma of the stomach. This report describes a rare case of

[A man with grouped papules on his shoulder].

A 58-years old man was seen at the dermatology outpatient clinic because of a spot near his ear. However, during physical examination soft-elastic papules on his left shoulder were visible. As the patient had not undergone additional examination for this, a biopsy was taken. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of cutaneous segmental neurofibromatosis type 1.

Updated diagnostic criteria and nomenclature for neurofibromatosis type 2 and schwannomatosis: An international consensus recommendation.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) and schwannomatosis (SWN) are genetically distinct tumor predisposition syndromes with overlapping phenotypes. We sought to update the diagnostic criteria for NF2 and SWN by incorporating recent advances in genetics, ophthalmology, neuropathology, and neuroimaging. METHODS: We used a multistep process, beginning with a Delphi method involving global disease experts and subsequently involving non-neurofibromatosis clinical experts, patients, and foundations/patient advocacy groups. RESULTS: We reached consensus on the minimal clinical and genetic criter

Understanding barriers to diagnosis in a rare, genetic disease: Delays and errors in diagnosing schwannomatosis.

Diagnosis of rare, genetic diseases is challenging, but conceptual frameworks of the diagnostic process can guide quality improvement initiatives. Using the National Academy of Medicine diagnostic framework, we assessed the extent of, and reasons for diagnostic delays and diagnostic errors in schwannomatosis, a neurogenetic syndrome characterized by nerve sheath tumors and chronic pain. We reviewed the medical records of 97 people with confirmed or probable schwannomatosis seen in two US tertiary care clinics. Time-to-event analysis revealed a median time from first symptom to diagnosis of 16.

Segmental spinal neurofibromatosis 1: a novel phenotype.

INTRODUCTION: Segmental neurofibromatosis (SNF) is a rare subtype of neurofibromatosis (NF). The disease is characterized by features circumscribed to one or more body cutaneous and/or subcutaneous segments. This is a classic example of somatic mosaicism which occurs by postzygotic mut ation of the NF1 gene late in the course of embryonic development affecting localized neural crest lines in the fetus. Spinal neurofibromatosis, on the other hand, is characterized by histologically proven bilateral neurofibromas of the spinal roots. METHODS: Hereby we describe a novel manifestation of spinal S

Mathematical Modeling and Nail Placement Accuracy Analysis of NF-1 Neurofibromatosis Scoliosis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

We have analyzed the arch root morphology, nail placement accuracy, degree of arch deformity, and three-dimensional Cobb angle in patients with NF scoliosis by CT 3D reconstruction. Likewise, we have thoroughly examined arch root morphology, nail placement accuracy, degree of arch deformity, and three-dimensional Cobb angle in patients with idiopathic scoliosis by CT 3D reconstruction. The results of the two groups were statistically analyzed and compared to assess the efficacy and other morphological differences between these groups. For this purpose, 276 patients with scoliosis, including 22

Psychological resiliency explains the relationship between emotional distress and quality of life in neurofibromatosis.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatoses (NF; NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis) are incurable tumor suppressor syndromes with heterogeneous symptoms. Emotional distress (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress) is common in NF and impairs quality of life (QoL). Several modifiable dimensions of resiliency can contribute to enhanced QoL in medical populations but have been overlooked as treatment mechanisms for NF. Our goal was to determine, using data from an ongoing efficacy RCT testing a mind-body program for NF, if resiliency explains the relationship between emotional distress and QoL. METHODS: We performed stru…

A rare case of schwannomatosis of the extremities.

A schwannoma is a benign tumor that arises from the myelin-producing Schwann cells that surround nerves. We herein report a case involving a 55-year-old man who first presented to our clinic with a schwannoma of the posterior tibial nerve and 5 years later with a schwannoma of the ulnar nerve. This is the first report of schwannomatosis of the ulnar and posterior tibial nerves.

Nerve Tumors of the Upper Extremity.

Nerve sheath tumors of the upper extremity are among the common neoplastic pathologies encountered by hand surgeons. A majority of these tumors are benign schwannomas or neurofibromas and may be associated with neurofibromatosis. Clinical signs of malignant transformation include new onset of pain and rapid growth. Imaging characteristics, such as standardized uptake value greater than 4.0 on PET scan, may aid in the diagnosis of a malignant tumor. Surgical excision, often with intrafascicular dissection with nerve preservation, is recommended treatment of benign lesions. Wide surgical excisio

Conclusions and future directions for the REiNS International Collaboration.

The Response Evaluation in Neurofibromatosis and Schwannomatosis (REiNS) International Collaboration was established with the goal to develop consensus recommendations for the use of endpoints in neurofibromatosis (NF) clinical trials. This supplement includes the first series of REiNS recommendations for the use of patient-reported, functional, and visual outcomes, and for the evaluation of imaging response in NF clinical trials. Recommendations for neurocognitive outcome measures, the use of whole-body MRI in NF, the evaluation of potential biomarkers of disease, and the comprehensive evalua
