[Electroneuromyography in pediatric clinical neurology].

The diagnostic effectiveness of electroneuromyography in nervous and neuromuscular diseases at various periods of childhood is analyzed. The electroneuromyographic characteristics of the "floppy child" syndrome, natal traumatic humeral plexitis, syndromes of the strio-pallidar system affection and neuromuscular diseases are presented with reference to age.

Experimental Concussion: (Section of Neurology).

The various hypotheses of the mechanism of coma resulting from cerebral trauma are discussed. Experimental evidence shows that there are two kinds of transient abolition of cerebral function by trauma-acceleration concussion, and compression concussion. The former is a passing paralysis which occurs in all brain-stem mechanisms examined and is brought about at and beyond a threshold value of change in velocity. A lesser degree of change causes momentary depression of function, a greater degree prolongs the phase of paralysis before recovery occurs. Movement of the head is necessary for the usu

The neurology of COVID-19 revisited: A proposal from the Environmental Neurology Specialty Group of the World Federation of Neurology to implement international neurological registries.

A comprehensive review of the neurological disorders reported during the current COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates that infection with SARS-CoV … myopathy with rhabdomyolysis. The main conclusion of this review is the pressing need to define the neurology of COVID-19, its frequency, manifestations, neuropathology and pathogenesis. On behalf of the World Federation of Neurology we invite national and regional neurological associations to create local databases to report cases with neurological manifes …

Neuroprotectants: The Next Frontier in Neurology.

Neuroprotectants are drugs or substances that help protect the brain and nerves from damage caused by injuries or diseases like stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. This review looks at different types of neuroprotective agents, including those that reduce inflammation, prevent cell death, or improve blood flow to the brain. While many of these substances show good results in lab studies, only a few have been successful in human trials. This is often due to problems like delayed treatment, difficulty reaching the brain, and differences between patients. The review also discuss

Wellness and Career Sustainability in Neurology.

This article reviews drivers of well-being in neurology, using the practice of neuromuscular neurology as an example and high-yield interventions to enhance professional fulfillment. Neurologist burnout, once viewed as a consequence of insufficient personal resilience and poor stress coping strategies, is now recognized as an occupational syndrome resulting from a mismatch between demands and resources. Expert consensus now recognizes that even highly resilient physicians can experience low professional well-being when faced with long-term exposure to human suffering and death, which are commo…

Chronic Pain Psychology in Neurology Practice.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the latest literature regarding chronic pain epidemiology and describes pain-specific psychological factors associated with the development and maintenance of chronic pain, mental health conditions that co-occur with chronic pain, and advances in the psychobehavioral treatment of chronic pain, including established treatments (ie, cognitive behavioral therapy [CBT], acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction) and emerging treatments (ie, pain reprocessing therapy). LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: In addition to CBT and acceptance and commitm

Opioids and Cannabinoids in Neurology Practice.

OBJECTIVE: Opioid and cannabinoid therapies for chronic pain conditions including neuropathic pain are controversial. Understanding patient and prescribing factors contributing to risks and implementing risk mitigation strategies optimizes outcomes. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: The ongoing transformation from a biomedical model of pain care toward a biopsychosocial model has been accompanied by a shift away from opioid therapy for pain, in particular for chronic pain. Opioid overdose deaths and opioid use disorder have greatly increased in the last several decades, initially because of increases in o

Emerging Subspecialties: Pediatric Movement Disorders Neurology.

Pediatric movement disorders (PMD) neurologists care for infants, children, and adolescents with conditions that disrupt typical movement; serving as important subspecialist child neurologists in both academic and private practice settings. In contrast to adult movement disorders neurologists whose "bread and butter" is hypokinetic Parkinson disease, PMD subspecialty practice is often dominated by hyperkinetic movement disorders including tics, dystonia, chorea, tremor, and myoclonus. PMD neurology practice intersects with a variety of subspecialties, including neonatology, developmental pedia…

[Reactivation of latent viruses in Neurology].

After establishing latent infection, some viruses can be reactivated by the alteration of host immunological conditions. First, we reviewed viruses that can cause neuronal damage by reactivation. Then we focused on the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The reactivation leads to neuronal damages through two possible mechanisms; "reactivation of a latent herpes virus" by which viruses can cause direct virus neurotoxicity, and "post-infectious immune inflammatory response" by which a focal reactivation of HSV leads to an inflammatory reaction. The former is radiologically characterized by cortical lesi

Public Engagement and Neurology: An Update.

BACKGROUND: Public engagement (PE) is defined as the involvement of "specialists who listen, develop their understanding, and interact with non-specialists in non-profit activities of educational, cultural, and social nature to engage the public in science-related matters". The public health relevance of PE consists in building up a scientifically literate society, able to participate in and support scientific and technological developments and their implications for educational settings. Neurological disorders account for 35% of all diseases. PE could have a positive impact on the lives of pe

Neurology residents' education in functional seizures.

We report a survey of neurology residency program directors (PDs) and recent neurology residency graduates about the education provided during residency on functional seizures (FS), a subtype of functional neurological disorder (FND). The purpose of our study was to assess the education gap for neurology residents about FS since patients with FS are frequently seen by neurologists, who typically conduct the evaluation and share the findings with the patient. A survey was sent to 93 Neurology residency program directors and 71 recent graduates. We obtained a low response rate of 17%. Results of…

Neurology of the acute hepatic porphyrias.

Porphyrias are a set of rare inherited metabolic disorders, each of them representing a defect in one of the eight enzymes in the haem biosynthetic pathway resulting in the accumulation of organic compounds called porphyrins. Acute hepatic porphyrias (AHP) are those in which the enzyme deficiency occurs in the liver, of which acute intermittent porphyria is by far the most common subtype. Neurology of the AHP is still challenging in practice, and patients rarely receive the correct diagnosis early in the disease course. For AHP, which primarily affects the central and peripheral nervous system…

Historical perspective of neurology in Iran.

Iran is an ancient country, known as the cradle of civilization. The history of medicine in Iran goes back to the existence of a human in th … paralysis, tremor, and meningitis. Several outstanding scientists developed the medical science of neurology in Iran, the work of whom has been used by other countries in the past and present. In the modern era, the Iranian Neurological Association was established with the efforts of Professor Jalal Barimani in 1991.
