We refer to the gut as a neurological organ to emphasize the particular importance of the nervous system in the regulation of digestive functions, given that the gastrointestinal tract is innervated by five different classes of neurons: intrinsic enteric neurons, vagal afferents, spinal afferents, parasympathetic efferents and sympathetic efferents. Virtually each aspect of digestive activity is under the regulatory influence of neurons, among which the enteric nervous system (ENS) plays the most important part. The ENS acts like a brain in the gut that functions independently of the central n

Parameters of the electrical activity of the isolated vestibulocerebellar complex of the frog were studied under in vitro conditions. In the region of the vestibular nucleus (nc. VIII), in the presence of stimulation of the stato-acoustic nerve (n. VIII), responses from efferent vestibular neurones and from unidentified (probably vestibulospinal) neurones were recorded. The latent periods of their excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs, 1.4-2.2 ms) were indicative of mono- and disynaptic connection. Inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) were also observed. Stimulation of the auricular

The sympathetic nervous system is defined anatomically as the thoraco-lumbar autonomic nervous system with only efferent neurones projecting into the lower extremities. The afferent fibres travelling in the sympathetic nerves and supplying visceral organs are named visceral afferents. They are probably involved in visceral nociception. Some afferents in the sympathetic trunk which have been regarded by some as sympathetic afferent neurones from deep structures in the extremities in fact seem to innervate structures in the retroperitoneal space such as the vertebral column e.g. Arguments for an

1. The intra-axonal recording and horseradish peroxidase injection technique together with spontaneous eye movement monitoring has been employed in alert behaving monkeys to study the discharge pattern and axonal projections of mesencephalic saccade-related long-lead burst neurons (LLBNs). 2. Most of the recovered axons (N = 21) belonged to two classes of neurons. The majority (N = 13) were identified as efferents of the superior colliculus and had circumscribed movement fields typical of collicular saccade-related burst neurons. This discharge pattern, their responses to electrical stimulatio

Microtubule-associated protein 1B (MAP 1B) is a neuronal cytoskeleton marker with predominant expression in the developing nervous system. The present study provides evidence for the expression of this cytoskeleton protein in non-neuronal and neuronal cells along rat and human efferent ductules and epididymis (initial segment, caput, and cauda). Reverse transcription/polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis were used to confirm the presence of MAP 1B (mRNA and protein) in rat tissues. Immunohistochemical studies revealed MAP-1B-positive staining in columnar ciliated cells present in

In the mammalian cochlea, sensory hair cells are crucial for the transduction of acoustic stimuli into electrical signals, which are then relayed to the central auditory pathway via spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) afferent dendrites. The SGN output is directly modulated by inhibitory cholinergic axodendritic synapses from the efferent fibers originating in the superior olivary complex. When the adult cochlea is subjected to noxious stimuli or aging, the efferent system undergoes major rewiring, such that it reestablishes direct axosomatic contacts with the inner hair cells (IHCs), which occur onl

We review the structure and function of the vagus nerve, drawing on information obtained in humans and experimental animals. The vagus nerve is the largest and longest cranial nerve, supplying structures in the neck, thorax, and abdomen. It is also the only cranial nerve in which the vast majority of its innervation territory resides outside the head. While belonging to the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system, the nerve is primarily sensory-it is dominated by sensory axons. We discuss the macroscopic and microscopic features of the nerve, including a detailed description o

Rabbits were exposed to 100 dB pure-tone sound at 2 kHz for 2 h. Electron microscopy was used to study the relationship between changes in the outer hair cells, afferent nerve endings and efferent nerve endings. There was no relationship found between the degree of changes produced in the afferent nerve endings and that the outer hair cells. However, there was a relationship demonstrable between the degree of changes seen in the efferent nerve endings and the infranuclear region of the outer hair cells. These findings show that acoustic trauma will damage most the infranuclear region of the ou

Both sound exposure and gentamicin treatment cause damage to sensory hair cells in the peripheral chick auditory organ, the basilar papilla. This induces a regeneration response which replaces hair cells and restores auditory function. Since functional recovery requires the re-establishment of connections between regenerated hair cells and the central nervous system, we have investigated the effects of sound damage and gentamicin treatment on the neuronal elements within the cochlea. Whole-mount preparations of basilar papillae were labeled with phalloidin to label the actin cytoskeleton and a

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), which is a physiological consequence of obstructive sleep apnea, reduces baroreflex control of heart rate (HR). Previously, we showed that the heart rate (HR) response to electrical stimulation of the vagal efferent nerve was significantly increased following CIH in F344 rats. Since vagal cardiac efferent from the nucleus ambiguus (NA) project to cardiac ganglia and regulate HR, we hypothesized that vagal cardiac efferent innervation of cardiac ganglia is reorganized. Young adult F344 rats were exposed either to room air (RA) or to intermittent hypoxia for 3

Primary sensory neurons serve a dual role as afferent neurons, conveying sensory information from the periphery to the central nervous system, and as efferent effectors mediating, e.g., neurogenic inflammation. Neuropeptides are crucial for both these mechanisms in primary sensory neurons. In afferent functions, they act as messengers and modulators in addition to a principal transmitter; by release from peripheral terminals, they induce an efferent response, "neurogenic inflammation," which comprises vasodilatation, plasma extravasation, and recruitment of immune cells. In this article, we in

The location of both afferent and efferent carotid sinus nerve (CSN) cell bodies in the cat has been determined using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. Following a limited exposure of the central cut end of the CSN to HRP, labeled sensory ganglion cells were found in both the petrosal and superior ganglia of the IXth cranial nerve. An average of 387 in the former and 16 cells in the latter ganglion were labeled. Retrogradely labeled neurons were found only within the ipsilateral medulla. These cells were both round and spindle shaped and had an average somal diameter of 19 micrometer

Neurons expressing the m1, m2, and m4 muscarinic receptor genes in the adult rat striatum were identified and characterized by using several in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical procedures. Combined in situ hybridization for the simultaneous detection of two mRNAs in the same section or in adjacent sections as well as in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry on adjacent sections permitted us to identify the neurons containing m1, m2, or m4 receptor mRNA. Our observations demonstrate that m1, m2, and m4 receptor genes are expressed in one or several phenotypically distinct neuron

The glossopharyngeal and vagus cranial nerves provide the brainstem with sensory inputs from different receptors in the heart, lung, and vasculature. This afferent information is critical for the short-term regulation of arterial blood pressure and the buffering of emotional and physical stressors. Glossopharyngeal afferents supply the medulla with continuous mechanoreceptive signals from baroreceptors at the carotid sinus. Vagal afferents ascending from the heart supply mechanoreceptive signals from baroreceptors in different reflexogenic areas including the aortic arch, atria, ventricles, an

Vago-vagal reflex circuits modulate digestive functions from the oral cavity to the transverse colon. Previous articles in this series have described events at the level of the sensory receptors encoding the peripheral stimuli, the transmission of information in the afferent vagus, and the conversion of this data within the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) to impulses in the preganglionic efferents. The control by vagal efferents of the postganglionic neurons impinging on the glands and smooth muscles of the target organs has also been illustrated. Here we focus on some of the mechanisms by which th

We present a case of adult onset progressive neurodegenerative disease with a selective involvement in the globus pallidus (GP). The main symptom was extreme slowness in motion without rigidity, which was distinct from akinesia of parkinsonism. Dystonic posture developed in neck and fingers and mild rigidospasticity appeared in a later stage. Neuropathological examination shows a selective neuronal loss with gliosis in GP and degeneration of the efferent fibers. Although the subthalamic nucleus is slightly atrophic with minimal gliosis, there is no neuronal loss in the nucleus. The rest of the

This study was done to determine whether a pathway of efferent axons in the carotid sinus nerve is necessary for the phenomenon of "efferent inhibition" (inhibition induced in carotid body chemoreceptors by electrical stimulation of the carotid sinus nerve). Our approach was to eliminate efferent axons in the carotid sinus nerve of cats without destroying the sensory axons. This was achieved by cutting the ipsilateral glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves central to their sensory ganglia and/or by removing the nodose and superior cervical ganglia. In neurophysiological studies we found that the re

The cranial motor neurons innervate muscles that control eye, jaw, and facial movements of the vertebrate head and parasympathetic neurons that innervate certain glands and organs. These efferent neurons develop at characteristic locations in the brainstem, and their axons exit the neural tube in well-defined trajectories to innervate target tissues. This review is focused on a subset of cranial motor neurons called the branchiomotor neurons, which innervate muscles derived from the branchial (pharyngeal) arches. First, the organization of the branchiomotor pathways in zebrafish, chick, and mo

Saposin B (Sap B) is an essential activator protein for arylsulfatase A in the hydrolysis of sulfatide, a lipid component of myelin. To study Sap B's role in hearing and balance, a Sap B-deficient (B(-/-)) mouse was evaluated. At both light and electron microscopy (EM) levels, inclusion body accumulation was seen in satellite cells surrounding spiral ganglion (SG) neurons from postnatal month 1 onward, progressing into large vacuoles preceding satellite cell degeneration, and followed by SG degeneration. EM also revealed reduced or absent myelin sheaths in SG neurons from postnatal month 8 onw

Gastric and oesophageal afferent inputs to vagal efferent fibres were investigated in Urethane anaesthetized ferrets. Mechanical, chemical, and pharmacological stimuli were tested and efferent activity recorded from single cervical vagal fibres. Fibres showed either no basal discharge or low frequency, irregular patterns of resting discharge; only those which showed > 50% excitation or inhibition of basal activity with both gastric distension and oesophageal balloon distension were studied further. These responses were rapid and maintained only for the duration of the stimuli. 18/32 efferent f
