Syndromic sebaceous nevus: current findings.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous nevus is a congenital malformation of the skin that usually occurs on the scalp or face. Syndromic forms do rarely exist with associated cerebral and ocular malformations. The skin lesions are pale at birth and become irregular by puberty. In the adult patient, tumors (usually benign) develop from sebaceous nevus. Their surgical excision during childhood can give a better result in terms of the definitive scar. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to analyze our cases of syndromic sebaceous hamartoma, perform a review of the existing literature, and propose guidelines fo…

Dysplastic nevus: Fact and fiction.

The term "dysplastic nevus" (DN) implies that this nevus exists as a distinct and defined entity of potential detriment to its host. We examine the current data, which suggest that this entity exists as histologically and possibly genetically different from common nevus, with some overlapping features. Studies show that a melanoma associated with a nevus is just as likely to arise in a common nevus as in DN. Furthermore, there is no evidence that a histologically defined DN evolves into a melanoma or that the presence of 1 or more DN on an individual patient confers any increased melanoma risk…

Nevus-associated melanomas: clinicopathologic features.

OBJECTIVES: The clinical significance of nevus-associated melanoma compared with de novo melanomas remains controversial. It has been suggested that nevus-associated melanomas have a higher Breslow thickness and therefore worse prognosis. Over a 10-year period, this study evaluated the incidence of nevus-associated melanoma and its prognostic significance related to clinicopathologic features. METHODS: Cross-sectional study from 1995 through 2004 in a dermatopathology referral center. With available data, we evaluated sex, primary location, histologic subtype, Breslow thickness, Clark level, …

Becker's nevus syndrome with quadriparesis.

A 12-year-old girl presented to Manipal Teaching Hospital with quadriparesis of 8 months' duration. Examination revealed a hyperpigmented patch over the chest wall with overlying hypertrichosis, musculoskeletal anomalies, upper limb asymmetry and ipsilateral breast hypoplasia. MRI scan revealed cranio-vertebral junction anomaly and spina bifida occulta at the cervical spine level. Histopathological examination of the skin revealed findings consistent with Becker's nevus. Based on the patient's clinical presentation and investigations, a diagnosis of Becker's nevus syndrome was made. However, s…

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare condition characterized by multiple venous malformations involving the skin and internal organs. The gastrointestinal tract is always involved and intestinal haemorrhage is the most frequent clinical manifestation associated with iron deficiency anaemia. We describe a 10-year-old girl who, since birth, presented numerous venous malformations all over her body and a lymphangioma in the right leg. At the age of 5 years, she also had a severe episode of gastric bleeding requiring a blood transfusion. From this episode, she is suffering…

[Tumors associated with nevus sebaceous].

BACKGROUND: Nevus sebaceus (NS) is a congenital hamartomatous lesion, usually involving the scalp or the face. Various benign and malignant neoplasms can develop in association with NS, the most common being trichoblastoma, syringocystadenoma papilliferum, viral warts and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively examined the clinical and histopathological records of 15 NS cases with an associated tumor which were diagnosed between 1996 and 2004. RESULTS: All cases were adults and 3 of them had more than one tumor. Six cases had BCC, which is a higher incidence of …

Surgical treatment of CHILD nevus.

We report a young girl with an unusual manifestation of CHILD syndrome in whom skin lesions showed involvement of the right side of her neck as well as symmetrically distributed ptychotropic involvement of the large body folds. Excision resulted in improvement and finally healing of skin lesions within the submammary folds, where breast reduction was also performed, whereas excision of axillary lesions and subsequent grafting with split skin turned out to be unsuccessful.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome.

The blue rubber nevus syndrome consists of multiple venous malformations in the skin and gastrointestinal tract associated with intestinal hemorrhage and iron deficiency anemia. Other organs may be involved. The causes of this syndrome are unknown. Its most common presentation is in the form of sporadic cases, but dominant autosomal inheritance has been described. It is a condition that affects both sexes equally, and its occurrence is rare in the black race. We present a case of this syndrome diagnosed in a 11-year-old patient. He had severe anemia and a venous swelling on the trunk. Similar …

Vitiligo coexistent with nevus depigmentosus.

A 45-year-old Korean man had two distinct types of hypopigmented lesions on the forehead and back: vitiligo and nevus depigmentosus (ND). The hypopigmented macules on the forehead were incidentally discovered 15 days previously and responded well to steroid therapy. The hypopigmented macule on the back had been present since birth, was stable in size, and showed no response to steroid therapy. There were no remarkable differences between the two lesions in routine histopathology or Fontana-Masson staining. However, the lesion on the back was shown to contain melanocytes in electron microscopy …

Congenital triangular alopecia (Brauer nevus).

Congenital triangular alopecia is manifested at 3 to 5 years of age by unilateral or, less frequently, bilateral patches of alopecia in the frontotemporal region. At this age the differential diagnosis is important, particularly as regards alopecia areata. Only about 47 cases have been reported, probably because the lesion is benign and nonprogressive. In 6200 patients seen in index visits, we found 7 with triangular alopecia, a frequency of 0.11%. We believe that males do not require treatment because of the later development of androgenic alopecia, but in women, surgical treatment is success

Extensive unilateral speckled lentiginous nevus.

We report a case of speckled lentiginous nevus with extensive unilateral distribution in a 53-year-old man. The lesions involved the left back, extending from the midline anteriorly to the thorax, arm, and forearm. The background pigmentary patch covered only the back and upper arm. Histologic examination revealed a lentiginous pattern as well as a congenital nevocytic pattern, even in the areas where the background was nontanned skin. This combined clinical pattern in the same patient fits the descriptions for both the usual and unusual speckled lentiginous nevus. Cases with variants of exten…

Apoeccrine glands in nevus sebaceus.

Apoeccrine glands were found in 13 of 57 specimens of nevus sebaceus. The glands showed the basic structure of eccrine glands, but differed in that a part of the secretory duct was lined by characteristic apocrine epithelium. The apocrine alteration varied from slight apocrine changes in a few secretory cells to an almost complete alteration of the secretory epithelium in other glands. The association with changes in the excretory ducts of rare glands suggested a transformation of eccrine into apocrine glands. It was nevertheless considered as most likely that a majority of the apocrine glands…

Gorlin's basal cell nevus syndrome.

A case report is used to illustrate the characteristics of Gorlin's syndrome and to emphasize the need for early recognition by the physician and for thorough lifetime follow-up by the patient to prevent severe sequelae.
