Nitric oxide postharvest treatment improves disease resistance in ginger by regulating ROS homeostasis, phenylpropionic acid metabolism and S-nitrosylation levels.

Nitric oxide (NO), as a widely used preservative for fruit and vegetables, can effectively extend shelf life and improve disease resistance. Fusarium solani (F. solani) causes a soft rot that seriously impacts the quality and production of ginger. Thus, control of diseases in postharvest ginger is necessary. In this study, 1 mM sodium nitroprusside (SNP, NO donor) was used to explore the disease resistance of postharvest ginger after infection with F. solani. We found that NO inhibited further infestation of F. solani in ginger and had a direct inhibition of F. solani growth in vitro. NO reduc

Silicon and nitric oxide synergistically modulate the production of essential oil and rosmarinic acid in Salvia officinalis under Cu stress.

The individual impact of silicon (Si) and nitric oxide (NO) on secondary metabolism in several plant species has been reported, but their combined effect has never been evaluated yet. Therefore, in this study, single and combined impacts of NO and Si on the biosynthesis of rosmarinic acid (RA) and essential oil (EO) content in leaves of Salvia officinalis were investigated under both non-stress and Cu stress conditions. The results indicated that high Cu concentration decreased biomass and the content of polyphenols, but elevated electrolyte leakage, while lower Cu concentrations, especially 2

Nitric oxide donor protects against acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in rats via S-nitrosylation of TRPV1 on vagus nerve.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of nitric oxide (NO) in acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer of rats and the underlying mechanisms. We found that peritoneal injection of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, decreased the ulcer area, inflammatory cell infiltration and MPO degree in acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in rats. This effect was abolished by a transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) antagonist or prior subdiaphragmatic vagotomy. SNP increased the jejunal mesenteric afferent discharge in a dose-depended manner, which was largely diminished by pretreatment

Effect of Airborne Particle Abrasion and Nitric-Hydrofluoric Acid Etching on the Mechanical and Structural Properties of 3Y- and 5Y-TZP Zirconia.

INTRODUCTION: Surface treatment is essential for optimizing zirconia bonding, but conventional airborne-particle abrasion (APA) may compromise its mechanical properties, particularly in highly translucent materials. Nitric-hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching has recently emerged as a potential alternative, yet its influence on the surface characteristics and mechanical performance of different zirconia generations remains inadequately understood. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of APA and nitric-HF etching on the surface roughness, crystalline structure, and biaxial flexural strength (B

Electrocatalytic Synthesis of Essential Amino Acids from Nitric Oxide Using Atomically Dispersed Fe on N-doped Carbon.

How to transfer industrial exhaust gases of nitrogen oxides into high-values product is significantly important and challenging. Herein, we demonstrate an innovative method for artificial synthesis of essential α-amino acids from nitric oxide (NO) by reacting with α-keto acids through electrocatalytic process with atomically dispersed Fe supported on N-doped carbon matrix (AD-Fe/NC) as the catalyst. A yield of valine with 32.1 μmol mgcat -1 is delivered at -0.6 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, corresponding a selectivity of 11.3 %. In situ X-ray absorption fine structure and synchrotron ra

Acid-sensing ion channel 1 and nitric oxide synthase are in adjacent layers in the wall of rat and human cerebral arteries.

Extracellular acidification activates a family of proteins known as acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs). One ASIC subtype, ASIC type 1 (ASIC1), may play an important role in synaptic plasticity, memory, fear conditioning and ischemic brain injury. ASIC1 is found primarily in neurons, but one report showed its expression in isolated mouse cerebrovascular cells. In this study, we sought to determine if ASIC1 is present in intact rat and human major cerebral arteries. A potential physiological significance of such a finding is suggested by studies showing that nitric oxide (NO), which acts as a pow

Abscisic acid and nitric oxide confer poplar rust resistance through host defense activation and cross-kingdom regulation of effector genes.

Leaf rust disease caused by Melampsora larici-populina severely impacts the photosynthesis and growth of Populus cathayana, causing substantial productivity losses in forest trees. Abscisic acid (ABA) and nitric oxide (NO) are known to play key roles in plant defense. However, their synergistic interplay in woody plant rust resistance remains unresolved. Here, we investigated the roles of ABA and NO in P. cathayana defense against the biotrophic rust fungus M. larici-populina using physiological, transcriptomic, and transgenic approaches. Exogenous ABA and the NO donor sodium nitroprusside syn

Postharvest UV-B Irradiation Stimulated Ginsenoside Rg1 Biosynthesis through Nitric Oxide (NO) and Jasmonic Acid (JA) in Panax quinquefolius Roots.

The study highlights the influence and signal transduction mechanism of postharvest UV-B on the production of Rg1 in Panax quinquefolius roots during the drying process. The results showed that postharvest UV-B irradiation induced generation of nitric oxide (NO), jasmonic acid (JA), and ginsenoside Rg1 of P. quinquefolius roots. The UV-B-induced increase of Rg1 was suppressed by NO-specific scavenger (cPTIO) and NOS inhibitors (PBITU), JA synthesis inhibitor (SHAM), and JA synthesis inhibitor (PrGall), indicating that NO and JA played essential parts in UV-B-induced Rg1. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal inoculation increases phenolic synthesis in clover roots via hydrogen peroxide, salicylic acid and nitric oxide signaling pathways.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can increase the host resistance to pathogens via promoted phenolic synthesis, however, the signaling pathway responsible for it still remains unclear. In this study, in order to reveal the signaling molecules involved in this process, we inoculated Trifolium repense L. with an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), Glomus mosseae, and monitored the contents of phenolics and signaling molecules (hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), salicylic acid (SA), and nitric oxide (NO)) in roots, measured the activities of l-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and nitric oxide synthase (

15-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) protects pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells from apoptosis via inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) pathway.

15-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE), one of many important metabolic products of arachidonic acid (AA) catalyzed by 15-lipoxygenase, plays an important role in pulmonary vascular smooth muscle remodeling. We have previously shown its unsubstituted effects on the apoptotic responses of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs), but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly manifested. Previous studies have shown that inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) plays an important protective role against sepsis-induced pulmonary apoptosis. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determin

Amino acid profile and nitric oxide pathway in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis: L-arginine depletion in acute peritonitis.

To gain insights into the amino acid metabolism and L-arginine-nitric oxide system, we studied 21 control continuous peritoneal dialysis (CPD) patients and 13 patients with 15 episodes of acute peritonitis. The concentrations of amino acids, including L-arginine, were measured in the peritoneal dialysate and in the serum. The data demonstrate that patients with end-stage renal disease on CPD who have acute peritonitis develop L-arginine deficiency. The majority of patients with acute bacterial peritonitis have increased nitric oxide production as judged by the level of nitrites in the dialysat

Optimization of N-Phenylpropenoyl-l-amino Acids as Potent and Selective Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitors for Parkinson's Disease.

N-Phenylpropenoyl-l-amino acids (NPAs) are inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) inhibitors possessing preventive effects for Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, structural modifications for improving the iNOS inhibitory activity and blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability of NPAs were conducted, leading to 20 optimized NPA derivatives (1-20). Compound 18, with the most potent activity (IC50 = 74 nM), high BBB permeability (Pe = 19.1 × 10-6 cm/s), and high selectivity over other NOS isoforms, was selected as the lead compound. Further studies demonstrated that 18 directly binds to iNOS. In the 1-m

Role of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the production of prostaglandin E2 and nitric oxide during experimental murine paracoccidioidomycosis.

There has recently been increased interest in the potential health effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on the immune system. Paracoccidioidomycosis is the most important endemic mycosis in Latin America. Macrophages have a fundamental role and act as first line of organism defense. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of n-3 fatty acids on the production of PGE2 and NO by mice infected with Pb18 and fed a diet enriched with LNA for 8 weeks. To study the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on macrophage activity during experimental paracoccidioidomycosis, mice were infected

On the mechanism of the ascorbic acid-induced release of nitric oxide from N-nitrosated tryptophan derivatives: scavenging of NO by ascorbyl radicals.

During the past years, there has been increasing interest in endogenous nitric oxide storage compounds. Recently, we briefly reported on the ascorbate-dependent release of nitric oxide ((.)NO) from N-nitrosotryptophan derivatives. In the present study, the underlying mechanism of (.)NO release is studied in more detail, primarily utilizing N-acetyl-N-nitrosotryptophan (NANT) as a model compound. The initial rate of the ascorbate-induced release of nitric oxide has been found to correspond to the rate of NANT decay. In this process, N-acetyltryptophan (NAT) is produced almost quantitatively.
