Nurse educators' perspectives of trauma-informed educational practices in undergraduate nursing education: An interpretive descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-informed care (TIC) is an essential framework for nursing practice, yet its integration into undergraduate nursing education remains limited. Trauma-informed educational practices extend TIC principles to teaching and learning contexts and have the potential to transform nursing education by addressing student well-being and reducing secondary traumatic stress. However, little is known about how nurse educators understand and implement TIC in undergraduate nursing programs. AIM: This study explored Ontario nurse educators' knowledge about TIC and its potential to transform

Advancing nursing practice in Ireland: A pathway of care for nurse-led integrated venous leg ulcer management.

Approximately 80% of patients presenting with leg ulcers are venous in origin. However, lack of standardisation of care has a human and financial impact for patients and service providers. Increases in the aging population and number of patients entering older age with co-morbidities results in increases in the demand for venous leg ulcer treatments. A joint initiative between a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (RANP) in tissue viability and wound care, and a vascular consultant, identified deficits in patient care delivery and quality of life. A joint initiative Implementing the princip

Health Trajectories of Skilled Nursing Facility Patients With Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: Evidence for Practicing Nurses.

PURPOSE: Older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are at high risk for acute medical problems and their health trajectories frequently include hospital admission and care in a skilled nursing facility (SNF). Their health trajectories after SNF discharge are poorly understood. Therefore, in the current study, we sought to describe health trajectories and factors associated with hospital read-missions for older adults with ADRD during the 30 days following SNF discharge. METHOD: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from a clinical trial of transitional care of old

Practice nurse chlamydia testing in Australian general practice: a qualitative study of benefits, barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia infection is a significant public health issue for young people; however, testing rates in Australian general practice are low. Practice nurses (PNs) could have an important role in contributing to increasing chlamydia testing rates. The Australian Chlamydia Control Effectiveness Pilot (ACCEPt), a large cluster randomised control trial of annual testing for 16 to 29 year olds in general practice, is the first to investigate the role of PNs in maximising testing rates. In order to assess the scope for PN involvement, we aimed to explore PN's views in relation to involvemen

Emergency Service/Department as an (Un)Favorable Nursing Practice Environment.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency services/departments are complex environments, characterized by high nursing workload and unpredictable patient flow. National and International organizations recommend that health care institutions should develop strategies to promote favorable nursing practice environments. The Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index is a widely used assessment tool. METHODS: Quantitative, cross-sectional study that aimed to evaluate nurses' perceptions of the nursing practice environment in a Portuguese emergency service/department using the Practice Environment Scale o

Strengthening advanced practice through the nurse practitioner clinician-scientist.

This commentary discusses the emerging role of nurse practitioner (NP) clinician-scientists and its implications for strengthening advanced practice within acute care health systems. Although NPs have transformed health care delivery in acute care settings, research describing their optimal deployment, system-level impact, and workforce sustainability remains limited. We argue that NP clinician-scientists, clinically active NPs with formal research training, are uniquely positioned to bridge frontline practice and rigorous scientific inquiry. Their embedded roles within Learning Health Systems

Readiness for System-Wide Integration of Nursing Evidence-Based Practice.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, patient safety metrics decreased. A health care organization measured the culture and readiness for evidence-based practice (EBP) and its effect on improving the quality of care. This column describes the results of a quality improvement project focused on the use of EBP by nurses, scientists, and medical librarians within an organization as well as the effect of EBP knowledge and culture. It shows the effect of professional development on sustaining EBP and improving the delivery of care.

Cultivating moral sensitivity and restraint-free practice in nurses and midwives.

Nursing and midwifery students are frequently exposed to physical restraint during clinical training, often presented as necessary for patient safety. However, growing evidence challenges this assumption, highlighting the risks associated with restraint and the limited implementation of effective alternatives in practice. Studies show that alternatives are considered in only a minority of cases, while organisational and educational factors contribute to the persistence and normalisation of restraint. Although professional codes define restraint as an exceptional, last-resort measure, this prin

Speaking up in Nursing: What Policy Promises and Practice Delivers.

Speaking up is widely positioned as a core expectation of nursing practice, embedded in professional standards, codes of conduct, and organisational policy. Nurses are taught that raising concerns is central to patient safety, ethical care and professional accountability. Yet for many nurses, the experience of speaking up in practice falls short of this promise. This discussion paper examines the gap between policy rhetoric and workplace realities, and how this disconnect shapes nurses' behaviour, wellbeing, and professional identity. Drawing on contemporary literature, we explore how nurses l
