Respiratory dysfunction in persistent somatic symptoms: A systematic review of observational studies.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to analyze the existing literature investigating respiratory functioning in people with Persistent Somatic Symptoms (PSS) compared to healthy controls, to identify patterns of respiratory disturbances by symptom or syndrome, and describe any respiratory outcomes consistent across diagnoses. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted. A comprehensive search was carried out across five databases (PubMed (NCBI), PsycArticles (Ovid), Web of Science (Core Collection), Embase, and Scopus) using two customised search strings for pers

What proportion of people with migraine report postdromal symptoms? A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Postdromal symptoms, following headache resolution, are said to constitute a distinct phase of the migraine attack. We question the evidence for this, with regard both to the nature of such symptoms and to how often they are reported to occur. METHODS: We searched the Pubmed and Embase databases for relevant articles from their inception until 25 May 2023. We included observational studies recording the proportions of participants with migraine reporting one or more postdromal symptoms or specific individual symptoms. Two reviewers independently screened studies for relevance (agr

Risk of Gallstone Disease in Primary Hyperparathyroidism: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Apart from renal stones, primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has been linked to the occurrence of gallstone disease (GSD). Nevertheless, the association is not consistent across all studies. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aims to collate the hitherto available evidence and provide a pooled estimate of the association between GSD and PHPT. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched from inception till May 10, 2023 for observational studies reporting the prevalence of GSD (in terms of absolute numbers) in patients with P

Serum fluoride levels in ambulance staff after commencement of methoxyflurane administration compared to meta-analysis results for the general public.

OBJECTIVES: Ambulance officers administering methoxyflurane as an inhalational analgesic may be exposed to trace vapor. Fluoride is a methoxyflurane metabolite, and has been associated with acute renal failure in anesthesia patients and skeletal fluorosis with chronic elevated serum levels from other sources. However, there has been no direct measurement of serum fluoride in occupationally exposed ambulance officers. Thus, this study directly measures serum fluoride over a prolonged period in order to determine renal toxic and skeletal fluorosis risk to ambulance officers who are administering

The association between functional dyspepsia and depression: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

Concomitant functional dyspepsia (FD) and psychosocial stressors have been reported; however, the association between FD and depression remains controversial and no quantitative meta-analysis exists. Published articles were identified through a comprehensive review of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to the 8 July 2018. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals and subgroup analyses were calculated using a random-effects model. Findings for a total of 59 029 individuals were pooled across 23 studies and examined. Our analyses showed a positive association betw

Fluoroquinolones and the risk of tendon injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Tendinopathy is a known adverse reaction associated to fluoroquinolones, but a meta-analysis was not yet published. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and a meta-analysis of the scientific evidence evaluating the risk of tendon injury associated with fluoroquinolones. METHODS: A literature search was conducted to identify observational studies which reported results on the risk of Achilles tendon rupture (ATR), risk of Achilles tendinitis (AT), or risk of any tendon disorders (ATD). A meta-analysis was performed by pooling odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confid

Pleural lesions and the ILO classification: the need for a revision.

The ILO system for radiographic classification of pneumoconioses is a very important epidemiological tool. Unfortunately, the classification is not precise for pleural lesions, which are especially important for evaluation of asbestos-related diseases. The classification cannot separate extrapleural fat from diffuse thickening of the pleura, nor large plaques from diffuse thickening. In this paper, a short review of the different lesions are given and a revised scheme is suggested. This scheme includes as separate lesions: pleural fat; lesions of the parietal pleura, i.e., pleural plaques; and

Towards novel BIOmarkers to diagnose SEPsis (BIOSEP) in the emergency room: a protocol for a multicentre, prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The international Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines highlight the need for recognising sepsis in a timely and accurate manner. Early diagnosis and treatment of sepsis are crucial and associated with reduced mortality. In the early stages of sepsis, heterogeneous clinical signs are difficult to interpret, often leading to missed or delayed diagnoses, as well as inappropriate or late use of antibiotics. There is an urgent need to quickly and accurately identify patients with potential infection in the emergency department (ED) who are at risk of progressing along the infection-s

Anzhen Risk Evaluation System for Acute Aortic Syndrome (AZSCORE-AAS): protocol for a multicentre prospective cohort study in northern China.

INTRODUCTION: Acute aortic syndrome (AAS) is a group of acute and critical conditions, including acute aortic dissection (AAD), acute intramural haematoma and penetrating aortic ulcer. High mortality and morbidity rates result in a poor patient prognosis. Prompt diagnoses and timely interventions are paramount for saving patients' lives. In recent years, risk models for AAD have been established worldwide; however, a risk evaluation system for AAS is still lacking in China. Therefore, this study aims to develop an early warning and risk scoring system in combination with the novel potential bi
