Because of the risk of perinatal transmission and possible sexual transmission, it is important for obstetrician-gynecologists to keep abreast of the rapidly expanding literature on hepatitis C. Acute hepatitis C represents about 5% of all reported cases of hepatitis. Approximately 50% of acute infections progress to chronic liver disease. Risk factors for infection include intravenous (IV) drug use (21-42% of cases), previous blood transfusion (6-17%), and multiple sexual partners (6%); 40-50% of cases have no identified risk factors. The seroprevalence of anti-hepatitis C antibody is 70.8% i

From April 1985 to March 1986, 1,252 women were admitted for delivery at the Al Hada Armed Forces Hospital, Taif, Saudi Arabia. Of these, 224 (17.9%) were grand multiparas (GM) defined as mothers of parity greater than or equal to 6. History, labor and delivery as well as postpartum and neonatal courses were recorded using computerized records for later statistical calculations. The obstetric and perinatal outcome was calculated comparing the GMs to para-1 mothers and para-2-5 patients (P2-5), respectively. The latter group being empirically considered as the 'ideal' patient group. On comparin

Studies throughout the world demonstrate the effectiveness of prophylactic antibiotics in vaginal hysterectomy and cesarean section. Febrile morbidity is reduced by more than one half, and pelvic infections are reduced one third to one fifth, respectively. Prophylactic antibiotics are most beneficial in high-risk cesarean section, such as in patients in labor and with ruptured membranes. In abdominal hysterectomy, the effect of prophylactic antibiotics is less pronounced, and the results of the individual studies are more controversial. Prophylactic antibiotics are commonly used in extensive o

The high perinatal mortality among infants of women transferred from general practitioner to consultant care is well known, the implication being that if these women had been booked for consultant care several of the deaths might not have occurred. The findings of this study indicate that booking into a consultant unit did not reduce perinatal mortality and suggest that, where liaison between hospital and general practitioners is good and transfer easy, booking into a general practitioner maternity unit can be as safe for low-risk women as booking into a consultant unit.

Ultrasonic diagnosis is widely used today in obstetrics and gynecology. As no harmful side-effects, neither to the mother nor to the fetus can be detected, the method can be used to study the fetal development in its natural environment. The technics used for this study are either compound-scan or real-time scan. Progressing from the early to the late pregnancy the clinical problems, in which ultrasonic diagnosis is of importance are discussed. In early pregnancies these problems are related with the symptoms of abortion, whereby intact pregnancy, blighted ovum, missed abortion, ectopic pregna…

As early as about the turn of the century the causes for the discharge of the meconium under labour were studied and the attempt was made to record alterations of the cardiac sound under the influence of labour pain as well as the behaviour of the fetal heart by means of the electrocardiogram. In the development of obstetrics certain stages can be observed which in the past few decades entailed a great many changes, such as changing from delivery at home to delivery at hospital, parasitological clarification of intrauterine infections and the revelation of the pathogenesis of the Mhn. Studies …

Review of 1400 epidural anaesthesias during labour and delivery. The single shot method resulted in complete analgesia in 83.8% of the cases. There were 2.8% failures. With longer duration of albour 13.4% of the epidural anaesthesias had to be repeated. Epidural anaesthesia was tolerated well by the women in labour. Hypotension occurred in 21.6% of the cases and was corrected by intravenous infusion and positioning of the patient on the side. No adverse effects on the fetus were found. The duration of labour and delivery was not prolonged. The caesarean section rate was not increased by epidur

In German speaking countries peridural anesthesia in obstetrics has been introduced 25 years ago by Anselmino. Because of the increase of operative delivery and the--however rare--serious complications in the mother the technique has been employed less and less. Now, with the introduction of the catheter technique, which renders lower doses of the anesthetic effective and with improved treatment of complications due to it, the technique has become safer for the mother. Anomalies of the position of the fetal head are not more common than in deliveries without peridural anesthesia. But the more …
