Carpal tunnel syndrome: the association with occupation at a population level.

The aim of this study was to examine the association of occupation and gender with the incidence and severity of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We examined 884 patients of working age, diagnosed with CTS, in a specialist hand clinic that was the only provider of hand services to a health board area. We categorized occupation using the Standard Occupational Classification 2010 (SOC2010) and used local census data to calculate the incidence in each of the nine major occupational groups. The greatest incidence was in caring and leisure occupations (197 per 100 000 population per year), while the l…

Occupational and non-occupational allergic contact dermatitis and quality of life: a prospective study.

Attempted to evaluate and compare the impact on quality of life of occupational and non-occupational ACD and to identify the most frequently involved allergens. A quality of life questionnaire was applied. We noted moderate impact on the quality of life of both groups, without a statistical difference. Our study corroborates previous general data on the prevalence of nickel sulphate and paraphenylenediamine as the most common allergens. Potassium bichromate was shown to be one of the main occupational allergens and thimerosal as the main non-occupational allergen in our sample.

Influence of environmental factors on the evolution of industrial noise-induced hearing loss.

The aim of the study is to investigate how environmental factors, associated with exposure to industrial noise, affect the development of chronic noise-induced hearing loss. The study was conducted on 186 male subjects working in two bottling plants, situated respectively in a small farming community, and in a medium-sized city with significant levels of noise pollution. Levels of occupational exposure were the same for the two groups. The subjects were selected by means of a preliminary medical examination, and exposed to tonal hearing tests and acoustic impedance tests. Statistical analysis

Stakeholder perceptions of a workplace-based screening programme for artisanal and small-scale miners in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs) experience high prevalence of disease, notably tuberculosis (TB), human immunodeficieny virus (HIV), silicosis, sexually transmitted infections, substance misuse, and mercury and cyanide toxicity. Despite this, targeted healthcare interventions are limited. AIMS: To explore the perceptions of ASMs and their leaders/representatives in relation to a 5-year targeted health screening intervention for ASMs in Zimbabwe. Screening included TB, HIV and silicosis. Insights were also gathered from healthcare staff, academics and national stakeholders
