[Identification of occupational risks associated with diseases suspected to be of possible occupational origin seen in the National Health System].

In an earlier study, we identified 26 diseases of possible occupational origin, seen in different settings within the national health system in Catalonia. In this literature review we identify those occupational risk factors most strongly associated with these pathologies. After applying inclusion/exclusion criteria to 754 reviews, meta-analyses and/or practice guidelines, 37 articles remained that were rated for study quality by 3 reviewers. Of these, the 31 studies of highest quality were examined in depth, and summarised in a final table. Ergonomic risk factors (manual handling of materials

Associations between respiratory health, reported traffic, and occupational-related exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid urbanisation over the past century has led to increased traffic density and higher levels of ambient air pollutants. We aimed to investigate whether the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, asthma, and chronic bronchitis increases with the level of self-reported exposure to traffic and occupational-related pollution. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population comprised 25,889 general population subjects ages 16-75 years participating in the Swedish part of the GA2LEN study. Data were collected in the cities of Umeå, Uppsala, Stockholm, and Gothenburg. Self-reported data on

Preconception health assessments in occupational settings: Counseling versus written feedback.

AIM: Our preconception care (PCC) initiative in Akita (Japan) was previously reported to improve health literacy and motivate behavioral changes. To make the check-up widely available, a more feasible and sustainable system is necessary. Our aim was to evaluate a resource-efficient preconception check-up implemented in Ehime Prefecture. METHODS: The Ehime PCC check-up included female employees aged 18-39 and took place between July 2023 and January 2024. Participants attended a lecture, underwent blood tests, and received written feedback. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were conducted for

Topical anesthetic abuse keratopathy: an overlooked occupational eye health concern.

BACKGROUND: Topical anesthetic abuse keratopathy is a rare but potentially devastating complication that may lead to irreversible vision loss. In occupational settings, workers who sustain frequent ocular injuries may self-administer topical anesthetics without prior prescription, consequently increasing the risk of severe complications. This study evaluated the clinical findings and visual outcomes of patients with this condition. METHODS: All patients diagnosed with topical anesthetic abuse keratopathy who presented to Khalili Hospital, Shiraz, Iran, from March 2023 to March 2025 were inclu

Occupational Therapists' Role in Perinatal Care: A Health Promotion Approach.

This article establishes and examines occupational therapists' role in perinatal care and proposes a health promotion approach for new and expectant mothers. The author demonstrates the importance of maintaining meaningful occupational engagement during this critical life stage by incorporating evidence from orthopedic, rehabilitation, and hand therapy research. New and expectant mothers are at high risk for upper extremity (UE) conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain's tenosynovitis, and tendinosis of the UE. Occupational therapists with basic knowledge of hand therapy are well

Promoting Occupational Safety and Health for Cambodian Entertainment Sector Workers.

Cambodia has developed booming textile, garment, tourism, and entertainment service industries since the mid-1990s. The 2007 global financial crisis pushed many garment workers, who lost their jobs, into the entertainment sector. Entertainment workers are typically engaged informally by their employers and are subjected to long working hours, sexual harassment, and violence. Many who sell beverages are forced into excessive alcohol consumption as part of their work. Many are also expected by their employers and clients to provide sexual services. To address unsafe and unhealthy working conditi

Malignant pleural mesothelioma: incidence, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and occupational health.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of malignant mesothelioma in Germany is about 20 cases per million persons per year. Its association with asbestos exposure, usually occupational, has been unequivocally demonstrated. Even though the industrial use of asbestos was forbidden many years ago, new cases of mesothelioma continue to appear because of the long latency of the disease (median, 50 years). Its diagnosis and treatment still present a major challenge for ambulatory and in-hospital care and will do so for years to come. METHODS: This article is based on a selective review of the literature, along

Nonfatal occupational falls among U.S. health care workers, 2008-2010.

The purpose of this study was to describe antecedents and characteristics of nonfatal fall-related injuries among health care workers in the United States. A special request was made for the Bureau of Labor Statistics to obtain nonfatal fall-related injury data from 2008 to 2010. Overall, workers in the nursing-related profession had the highest percentages of workplace fall-related injuries. Ninety-one percent of these injured workers were female, and more than 50% were between the ages of 45 and 64 years. More than 25% of fall injuries resulted in 31 or more workdays being lost. This study i

[Occupational alergy: a major health hazard among food processing workers].

Food-processing is one of the industries characterized by high exposure to occupational allergens. Exposure to allergens of plant or animal origin is most extensive during food processing, including meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, dairy products, and grain products as well as during production of animal feed and other foodstuffs. Respiratory diseases are the major problem in the food processing industry. It is essential to better recognize the structure of food allergens and mechanisms by which they induce diseases to identify risk factors and health problems which may occur in workers. The aut

Occupational therapy in acute inpatient psychiatry: an activities health approach.

This article discusses some of the challenges that occupational therapists working in acute psychiatric inpatient settings commonly face. There is often a lack of sufficient time available for treatment as well as limitations inherent in addressing functional problems in the artificiality of a hospital environment. A theoretical framework is introduced from which the role of occupational therapy and realistic objectives for acute short-term care can be identified. This framework for inpatient occupational therapy practice is based on the concept of activities health, which provides a definitio

Principles of occupational health: from peg legs to pension funds.

Pirates, considered lawless barbarians, had a functioning and premium-free accident insurance system in the 17th century, the principles of which are also found in today's workers' compensation: collective risk-sharing, fixed compensation payments for injuries, and jointly financed benefits. Modern occupational health formalizes and significantly extends the pirates' rough-and-ready concept through legal and actuarial frameworks. For illustration, we compare the Pirate Codes or Articles with their compensation practice with today's occupational safety and health systems in the UK and Germany. …

Workplace bullying, harassment and discrimination among UK occupational health practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Within UK occupational health (OH) practice, unlike the National Health Service, there is an absence of research on workplace bullying, harassment or abuse (BHA) and discrimination. AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of workplace BHA and discrimination among UK OH practitioners and to identify any differences on the basis of certain personal or work-related characteristics. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted by the administration of a developed questionnaire by key UK OH organisations to their respective memberships. Occupational health surveillance of compressed air workers: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Compressed air is increasingly used in the underground construction of caissons and tunnels. New risks have been identified, suggesting the need to develop counter-measures. AIMS: This scoping review aimed to provide insight into the health risks, prevention and surveillance measures, and adverse health effects related to compressed air work during tunnel construction. METHODS: Health risks were assessed based on the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewers' Manual, the recommendations of Pollock and the PRISMA Scoping Reviews Checklist. The scoping review mapped and analysed studies of

Patients seeking occupational health advice before and after COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increased prevalence of psychological disorder in population-based studies, but the effect on the ability to work has been less well studied, except in health workers.
