Contact lens related corneal ulcers at the Ohio State University Hospitals 1983-1987.

We reviewed the records of patients with ulcerative keratitis associated with contact lens wear admitted to The Ohio State University Hospitals from January 1, 1983 through December 31, 1987. Of 127 cases of infectious ulcerative keratitis, 25 (19%) were associated with the use of contact lenses. Of these 25, 21 cases (84%) were associated with the use of soft lenses (40% aphakic, 40% cosmetic). Seventy-six percent (19 of 25) were culture-positive; Pseudomonas was the most common isolate (12 of 19, 63% of culture-positive cases). When compared with daily wear soft contact lenses, cosmetic and …

Socioeconomic Health Disparities in the Treatment of Thyroid Cancer: A Single Institution in Southwestern Ohio.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in thyroid cancer care are driven by demographic and socioeconomic factors such as insurance status, income, and access to specialized care. METHODS: Retrospective chart review. Demographic and clinical data from 281 adult patients who underwent thyroidectomy or hemithyroidectomy for papillary or follicular thyroid cancer at a single institution from 2015 to 2023. We evaluated the effect of demographic variables with stage at diagnosis, tumor size, and time to surgery. We assessed predictors of tumor size > 2 cm, advanced cancer stage (stage III+), and surgical delay >

Perfluorooctanoic acid and cancer incidence: an updated investigation of a cohort in the mid-Ohio Valley.

BACKGROUND: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been classified as a human carcinogen based partly on limited epidemiologic evidence of increased kidney and testicular cancer risk. We conducted an updated analysis of cancer incidence in a high PFOA-exposed cohort of community members and workers in the mid-Ohio Valley with follow-up extended by approximately 10 years on average and linkage to the Virtual Pooled Registry-Cancer Linkage System to better characterize risk of malignancies of a priori interest and to explore risk of other cancers. METHODS: Based on estimates of annual serum PFOA con…

Emergence of Ixodes scapularis and Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease vector and agent, in Ohio.

Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, is caused by a tick-borne infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. Currently, Ohio is considered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be non-endemic for Lyme disease. The low incidence of Lyme disease in this state was largely attributed to the absence of the transmitting vector, Ixodes scapularis, commonly known as the blacklegged tick. However, a tick surveillance program established by Ohio Department of Health indicated that the number of I. scapularis in Ohio had increased sharply in recent years, f…

George W. Crile, Ohio's first neurosurgeon, and his relationship with Harvey Cushing.

Much has been written about Harvey Cushing, his contributions to neurosurgery, and his relationship with many of his contemporaries. Nevertheless, there is no independent report documenting his relationship with Ohio's first neurosurgeon, George W. Crile. Crile's role as a neurosurgeon is limited to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and he is best remembered for other accomplishments. Father of physiological surgery, pioneering surgeon, innovator, inventor, soldier, and the principal founder of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Crile lived during the golden era of surgery, when…

Geospatial correlation of industrial plastics emissions with bladder and kidney cancer burden in Ohio.

BACKGROUND: While several environmental carcinogens are well-established in the development of bladder and kidney cancer, the role of microplastic exposure remains poorly understood. Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), often released during plastics manufacturing and recycling, are emerging pollutants that may carry carcinogenic additives or act as chemical vectors in air and water. Ohio-a major hub for plastics production-has experienced rising rates of bladder and kidney cancer, prompting an investigation into the spatial relationship between cancer incidence and exposure to plastics-processing …

Modified capture-recapture estimates of the number of families with Lynch syndrome in Central Ohio.

Past methods for estimating the population frequency of familial cancer syndromes have used cases and controls ignoring the familial nature of genetic disease. In this study we modified the capture-recapture method from ecology to estimate the number of families in central Ohio with Lynch syndrome (LS). We screened 1566 colorectal cancer cases and 545 endometrial cancer cases in central Ohio from 1999 to 2005 and identified 58 with LS. We screened an additional 3346 colorectal and 342 endometrial cancer cases from 2013 to 2016 and identified 149 with LS. We found 12 LS mutations shared between…

Host Resistance and Chemical Control for Management of Sclerotinia Stem Rot of Soybean in Ohio.

Recent outbreaks of Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR) of soybean in Ohio, along with new fungicides and cultivars with resistance to this disease, have led to a renewed interest in studies to update disease management guidelines. The effect of host resistance (in moderately resistant [MR] and moderately susceptible [MS] cultivars) and chemical control on SSR and yield was evaluated in 12 environments from 2014 to 2016. The chemical treatments evaluated were an untreated check, four fungicides (boscalid, picoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, and thiophanate-methyl), and one herbicide (lactofen) applied at so…
