Negative mesenteric effects of lung recruitment maneuvers in oleic acid lung injury are transient and short lasting.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that repeated recruitment maneuvers (RMs) have sustained negative effects on mesenteric circulation, metabolism, and oxygenation 60 mins after RMs in pigs with oleic acid lung injury. Further, we aimed to test the hypothesis that an infusion of prostacyclin (PC) at 33 ng.kg.min would attenuate such possible negative mesenteric effects. DESIGN: Randomized, experimental, controlled study. SETTING: University hospital animal laboratory. SUBJECTS: A total of 31 anesthetized, fluid-resuscitated pigs with oleic acid lung injury. INTERVENTIONS: : Animals were ran

Effects of inverse ratio ventilation and positive end-expiratory pressure in oleic acid-induced lung injury.

Continuous as well as cyclic (with each expiration) lung collapse in acute respiratory failure can be reduced by positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) or short expiration times, as in inverse ratio ventilation (IRV). In 20 pigs with oleic acid-induced lung edema, we compared the effects of a PEEP of 20 cm H(2)O with IRV, using an inspiratory-to-expiratory ratio of 3:1 without external PEEP. During IRV, expiration times of 0.5 or 1.0 s were obtained with respiratory rates of 30 breaths/min or 15 breaths/min, respectively. In 15 animals, ventilation-perfusion relationships were studied through

Strain-dependent cytokine profile and susceptibility to oleic acid anilide in a murine model of the toxic oil syndrome.

The toxic oil syndrome (TOS) was caused by the ingestion of an adulterated rapeseed oil containing oleic acid anilide (OAA). It was characterized by lethal symptoms in the acute phase and by symptoms of idiopathic autoimmune diseases in the chronic phase. The pathogenetic mechanisms remain unclear. In a murine model of TOS we demonstrate strain-dependent effects on the immune system after treatment with OAA intraperitoneally. While C57BL/6 (H-2b) mice develop a polyclonal B cell activation without disease symptoms, most A/J (H-2a) mice suffer an acute lethal wasting disease. These differences

Partition of oleic acid between the lymph and portal blood in rats having a diverted bile-pancreatic duct.

The present study examines the suggestion that in the absence of adequate bile and pancreatic juice, which support the absorption from the gut of long-chain fatty acids into lymph, the fatty acids are absorbed directly into the portal blood. Oleic acid (18:1) partitioning between lymph and portal blood was investigated in intact and bile- and pancreatic juice-diverted rats. In a first set of experiments, 18:1 absorption from the gut into lymph and blood was studied by continuous recovery of the mesenteric lymph for 6 h and mesenteric portal venous blood for 1 h. In a second set of experiments,

The prone position improves arterial oxygenation and reduces shunt in oleic-acid-induced acute lung injury.

The arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) may increase when patients with the adult respiratory distress syndrome are turned from supine to prone. We sought to reproduce this observation in dogs with acute lung injury to study the physiologic mechanism by which the improvement in oxygenation might occur. Twenty anesthetized dogs were ventilated with a constant tidal volume (20 ml/kg) of 100% oxygen. Oleic acid (0.09 ml/kg) was injected into the right atrium while rotating the animals through 360 degrees in 4 stages. Animals in Group I (n = 5) remained supine for 10 to 120 min until the supine PaO2 fe

The effects of prophylactic expiratory positive airway pressure on the resolution of oleic acid-induced lung injury in dogs.

It is not known whether positive end-expiratory airway pressure (PEEP) merely improves gas exchange in patients with the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or if it also affects the resolution of their lung injury. The present investigation was performed to determine whether expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP), a form of PEEP, is prophylactic in preventing the lung injury induced by oleic acid in dogs or in enhancing its resolution. Arterial and mixed venous blood gases and functional residual capacity (FRC) were measured in 14 pairs of mongrel dogs with indwelling catheters and

Action of oleic acid on the exocrine pancreatic secretion of the conscious rat: evidence for an anti-cholecystokinin-pancreozymin factor.

The effects on exocrine pancreatic secretion of an intraduodenal infusion of oleic acid (2 ml in 60 min) has been assessed in conscious rats provided with a new type of duodenal cannula permitting the normal flow of pancreatic juice, but not of bile, between experiments.1. Intraduodenal oleic acid infusion induces an increased secretion of water and bicarbonate which is still significantly above basal values 90 min after the end of infusion. Protein output increased during the infusion, but protein concentration and output significantly decreased under basal levels 120 min and 150 min after in

Identification of the differential and synergic lipotoxic patterns of oleic acid, palmitic acid, and their mixture in 3D HepG2/C3A tissue using liver-on-chip technology.

The metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, previously formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD) is rapidly expanding worldwide in parrallel with the obesity pandemic. Dietary fatty acids including oleic (OA) and palmitic acids (PA) contribute to the hepatic intracellular triglyceride accumulation, and are therefore thought to play key roles in disease development and progression. Taking advantage of the cutting-edge organ-on-chip technology that mimics the 3D organ dynamic environment, we aimed at investigating the role of OA, PA and a 2:1 OA/PA mixt

Chlorogenic Acid from Burdock Roots Ameliorates Oleic Acid-Induced Steatosis in HepG2 Cells through AMPK/ACC/CPT-1 Pathway.

Hepatic steatosis can cause liver dysfunction and cell injury, on which natural functional factors are expected to be an effective approach for long-term intervention. However, the cellular molecular mechanisms are unclear. Chlorogenic acid is a phenolic compound, which can regulate lipid metabolism and is abundant in burdock root. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential molecular mechanism of the effect of chlorogenic acid from burdock root (ACQA) on steatosis in HepG2 cells. In this study, we found that ACQA reduced the number of lipid droplets and lipid levels in oleic acid-t

Differential Effect of Dietary Supplementation with a Soybean Oil Enriched in Oleic Acid versus Linoleic Acid on Plasma Lipids and Atherosclerosis in LDLR-Deficient Mice.

Both monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play important roles in lipid metabolism, and diets enriched with either of these two fatty acids are associated with decreased cardiovascular risk. Conventional soybean oil (CSO), a common food ingredient, predominantly contains linoleic acid (LA; C18:2), a n-6 PUFA. Recently, a modified soybean oil (MSO) enriched in oleic acid (C18:1), a n-9 MUFA, has been developed, because of its improved chemical stability to oxidation. However, the effect of the different dietary soybean oils on cardiovascular disease remain

Omega-3 fatty acid decreases oleic acid by decreasing SCD-1 expression in the liver and kidney of a cyclosporine-induced nephropathy rat model.

AIM: Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD)-1 and elongase-6 (Elovl-6) are associated with fatty acid (FA) synthesis. We evaluated the effect of omega-3 FA on erythrocyte membrane FA contents through SCD-1 and Elovl-6 expression in the liver and kidney of a cyclosporine (CsA)-induced rat model. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into control, CsA, and CsA treated with omega-3 FA groups. We measured SCD-1 and Elovl-6 expression levels via western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis. RESULTS: Erythrocyte membrane oleic acid content was lower in the CsA with omega-3 FA group compared to t

Pomegranate peel-derived Cu/hydrochar nanocomposites: a sustainable catalyst for biodiesel production via oleic acid esterification.

Transforming pomegranate peel waste into a biodiesel catalyst advances waste-to-resource circularity. A facile hydrothermal carbothermal reduction method was used to synthesize copper-decorated hydrochar nanocomposites derived from peel bio-waste and CuSO4, with Cu(II) concentrations of 10, 25, and 50 mmol/L (denoted as Cu10/HC, Cu25/HC, and Cu50/HC, respectively). The physicochemical properties of the nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, XRD, BET, XPS, SEM-EDX, and NH₃-TPD, and their catalytic performance was evaluated for biodiesel production via the esterification of oleic acid (OA) w

Bronchoalveolar Lavage and Oleic Acid-Injection in Pigs as a Double-Hit Model for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).

The treatment of ARDS continues to pose major challenges for intensive care physicians in the 21st century with mortality rates still reaching up to 50% in severe cases. Further research efforts are needed to better understand the complex pathophysiology of this disease. There are different well-established animal models to induce acute lung injury but none has been able to adequately mimic the complex pathomechanisms of ARDS. The most crucial factor for the development of this condition is the damage to the alveolar capillary unit. The combination of two well-established lung injury models al

Oleic Acid Prevents Isoprenaline-Induced Cardiac Injury: Effects on Cellular Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Histopathological Alterations.

The present study was designed to assess the cardio-protective role of oleic acid in myocardial injury (MI) induced by intra-peritoneal injection of isoprenaline (ISO) in rats for 2 consecutive days. Oleic acid (OA) was administered orally (@ 5 mg/kg b.wt and 10 mg/kg b.wt) for 21 days before inducing MI. Pre-exposure to OA at higher dose significantly improved the HW/BW ratio, myocardial infarct size, lipid profiles (total cholesterol, HDL-C) and cardiac injury biomarkers (LDH, CK-MB, cardiac troponin-I, MMP-9), thus suggesting its cardio-protective role. The ameliorative potential of the hig
