The claustrum in the dog brain.

The structure of the claustrum was studied in the dog brain using Weigert's, Klüver-Barrera's, Manns' and Nissl's methods. It consists of two main parts arranged one above the other. The dorsal part is situated in the depth of the neocortex and extends from the gyrus orbitalis to the gyrus compositus posterior. The ventral part of the claustrum underlying the olfactory cortex continues from the cuadal fragments of the olfactory peduncle to the entorhinal area, where it fuses with its deep layers. The claustrum can be regarded as a fragment of a bigger cellular formation present in different pa

Deprivation-Induced Plasticity in the Early Central Circuits of the Rodent Visual, Auditory, and Olfactory Systems.

Activity-dependent neuronal plasticity is crucial for animals to adapt to dynamic sensory environments. Traditionally, it has been investigated using deprivation approaches in animal models primarily in sensory cortices. Nevertheless, emerging evidence emphasizes its significance in sensory organs and in subcortical regions where cranial nerves relay information to the brain. Additionally, critical questions started to arise. Do different sensory modalities share common cellular mechanisms for deprivation-induced plasticity at these central entry points? Does the deprivation duration correlate

Ontogenesis of the axonal circuitry associated with the olfactory system of the rat embryo.

The prenatal development of axonal connections in the rat olfactory system was studied using DiI. On day 16 (E16), the olfactory and vomeronasal nerves extended from the olfactory epithelia to the olfactory bulb (OB), the terminal nerve to the telencephalic septum, while axons of mitral and tufted cells reached the anterior olfactory nucleus (AO). Axons from the AO were also seen in the anterior commissure. On day E16(8) (at 16 days, 8 h), axons were anterogradely followed from the dorsal OB through the lateral olfactory tract (lo) to the bed nucleus of the accessory olfactory tract. At E18(0)

Developmental expression of reactivity to monoclonal antibodies generated against olfactory epithelia.

The developmental expression of immunocytochemical reactivity to 3 monoclonal antibodies (Mabs Neu 4, Neu 5, and Neu 9) that were generated against adult rat olfactory epithelium was examined in olfactory tissues of embryonic rats. Tissues examined included the nasal olfactory epithelium, nerve, and olfactory bulb, as well as vomeronasal epithelium and nerve. Reactivity patterns of these Mabs in adult rats have been described previously (Hempstead and Morgan, 1985a). All 3 Mabs show reactivity on the cell surfaces of neurons, axons, and dendrites of the olfactory epithelium proper. Neu 5 alone

Microsurgical anatomic features of the olfactory nerve: relevance to olfaction preservation in the pterional approach.

OBJECTIVE: The pterional approach represents the standard approach for most lesions of the anterior and middle cranial fossa. It requires some degree of frontal lobe retraction, which may result in temporary or permanent damage of olfaction because of nerve avulsion or mechanical compression. The purpose of this study, based on microanatomic dissection of human cadaveric specimens, was to review the microsurgical anatomic features of the nerve and suggest operative nuances that may contribute to reducing the rate of postoperative olfactory dysfunction. METHODS: Twenty olfactory nerves and tra

Regeneration in the olfactory system of vertebrates.

The olfactory sensory neurons, which are of placodal origin, maintain in adult vertebrates, including mammals, a neurogenetic matrix that allows for their replacement without impairment of function, both in normal circumstances (turnover) and after experimental intervention. The unique characteristics of these "disposable" neurons have recently led to a number of experiments whose results may have some importance in our understanding of the olfactory system and of the nervous system as a whole.

Structure of the mitral cell in the olfactory bulb of the goldfish (Carassius auratus).

The mitral cell in the olfactory bulb of the goldfish was examined by means of light microscopy, high-voltage electron microscopy, and conventional electron microscopy. Mitral cells are located rather diffusely throughout the glomerular and plexiform layers. They do not make their own discrete layer. The cell bodies are rounded or triangular, and are about 10-25 micrometers in diameter. In Golgi-impregnated material, thick cylindrical dendrites can be seen arising from the cell bodies and branching in the glomerular layer. Dendritic branches of some cells make two or more rather compact tufts,

Cortical odor processing in health and disease.

The olfactory system has a rich cortical representation, including a large archicortical component present in most vertebrates, and in mammals neocortical components including the entorhinal and orbitofrontal cortices. Together, these cortical components contribute to normal odor perception and memory. They help transform the physicochemical features of volatile molecules inhaled or exhaled through the nose into the perception of odor objects with rich associative and hedonic aspects. This chapter focuses on how olfactory cortical areas contribute to odor perception and begins to explore why o

Carnosine in primary afferents of the olfactory system: an autoradiographic and biochemical study.

Previous in vivo studies have shown that beta-alanine is incorporated specifically into the dipeptide L-carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine). In the present study, we administered beta-[3H]alanine to the nasal cavity of hamsters and used biochemical analyses to identify the radioactively labeled compounds in the olfactory epithelium and olfactory bulb and autoradiography to demonstrate the localization and transport of the label in the primary afferents of the olfactory system. The olfactory epithelium and lamina propria were labeled intensely 6 hr after intranasal beta-[3H]alanine administrati

Subclasses of olfactory receptor cells and their segregated central projections demonstrated by a monoclonal antibody.

A library of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) was generated against a homogenate of the rabbit olfactory bulb. One of them immunohistochemically distinguished a subgroup of olfactory nerves. Both in the olfactory bulb and the epithelium, this MAb labeled most olfactory receptor axons in the lateral but only a small fraction in the medial portion. These findings demonstrate a molecular heterogeneity among olfactory receptor cells and suggest a functional division between the lateral and the medial portions of the epithelium and the bulb.

Immunocytochemical localization of calretinin in the olfactory system of the adult lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis.

The distribution of calretinin immunoreactive (CR-ir) structures in the adult lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) olfactory system was studied by using immunocytochemical techniques. In the olfactory epithelium, a subpopulation of olfactory receptor cells was CR-ir. In the olfactory bulbs, three different cell populations were observed. Large CR-ir cells (mitral cells) were located medially to the olfactory glomeruli and occasionally between them. In the inner cellular layer, two types of CR-ir perikarya were found: numerous small CR-ir cells (granule cells) and some medium-sized CR-ir cells (putat

The human olfactory system in two proteinopathies: Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders. Their etiologies are idiopathic, and treatments are symptomatic and orientated towards cognitive or motor deficits. Neuropathologically, both are proteinopathies with pathological aggregates (plaques of amyloid-β peptide and neurofibrillary tangles of tau protein in Alzheimer's disease, and Lewy bodies mostly composed of α-synuclein in Parkinson's disease). These deposits appear in the nervous system in a predictable and accumulative sequence with six neuropathological stages. Both disorders present a long
