Condomless Sex Among Men Who Have Sex with Men: App-Facilitated Versus Non-App-Facilitated Relationships.

It is unclear whether online partner-seeking via (geo)social networking and dating websites or applications ("apps") is associated with engagement in condomless anal sex (CAS) among MSM (men who have sex with men). Previous studies present mixed findings revealing either positive, or negative, or no associations between online partner-seeking and CAS among MSM, indicating a need for additional research. This cross-sectional survey of young adult MSM residing in 15 Central Kentucky counties, USA (n = 217) provided demographic, behavioral, and relationship data about male or transgender partners

Using communities of practice in adult social care to build research capacity and foster best practice: a qualitative evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Communities of Practice (CoPs) are recognised as shared learning spaces that situate learning, deepen knowledge, and facilitate the exchange of expertise within a specific domain. While CoPs often emerge organically, they have been widely adopted across health, social care, and education. However, their civic potential, particularly in enabling people with lived experience of social care to collaborate with practitioners to shape practice and drive meaningful change, remains underexplored. The Kent Research Partnership, South-East England (2021-5), aimed to build research capacity i

Cyberbullying: A study of its extent, coping resources, and psychological impact among college students.

INTRODUCTION: Bullying is an aggressive act with a hostile intent to dominate, abuse, or intimidate an individual(s) with a lesser social or physical power, repeatedly over a period of time. Though bullying can manifest in any social situation, its pernicious presence in the educational institutions has become a source of concern to all stakeholders. With their self-esteem and world view entwined in cyberspace, the present generation of young adults derive their social status and self-worth through affirmations through the internet via social networking sites. Cyberspace is an ideal environmen

Social help or harm? An egocentric network analysis of college peer influence on body dissatisfaction and eating pathology.

Previous research has shown that peers influence college women's body attitudes and behaviors. However, many of these studies have examined similarities among peer dyads or specific groups and have not evaluated peer behaviors that may be particularly influential (e.g., appearance-focused social media use). The current study used an egocentric social network approach (i.e., participants identify and report on their social networks) to examine the collective influence of college social networks on body dissatisfaction and eating pathology. College students (N = 94; 94% identified as a cisgender

A life course health development model of HIV vulnerabilities and resiliencies in young transgender women in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Globally transgender women (TW) are at heightened vulnerability for HIV infection. In Lima Peru, sharp increases in HIV prevalence are seen among TW ages 25 years and older highlighting the need for early HIV prevention efforts for young TW. This study conducted in-depth qualitative interviews to elucidate the social and developmental contexts of HIV vulnerability for young TW in Lima Peru. METHODS: Between November 2019 and February 2020, young TW ages 16-24 years (n = 21) in Lima Peru were purposively sampled using in-person (e.g., face-to-face outreach) and online (e.g., social

Staying connected: How close friendships supported emotional well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Close social relationships are critical for emotional well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted in-person contact with friends, particularly among young adults, for whom friendships support key developmental goals. In a longitudinal study of U.S. college students (N = 205; 10,088 observations), we examined how close friendship networks related to emotional well-being during the early months of the pandemic (May-October 2020). Leveraging prepandemic social network data and 28 days of ecological momentary assessments of affect and social interactions, we found that students with more

Examining the Role of Structural and Functional Social Network Characteristics in the Context of Chronic Pain: An Ego-centered Network Design.

The well-being and functioning of individuals with chronic pain (CP) vary significantly. Social factors, such as social integration, may help explain this differential impact. Specifically, structural (network size, density) as well as functional (perceived social support, conflict) social network characteristics may play a role. However, it is not yet clear whether and how these variables are associated with each other. Objectives were to examine 1) both social network characteristics in individuals with primary and secondary CP, 2) the association between structural network characteristics a

The influence of social networks on finding and selecting healthcare professionals.

Social networks consist of a group of individuals connected by family, work, or other interests and facilitated by an online structure or platform. They are also a relatively recent and widely used marketing phenomenon that is constantly evolving. The healthcare field includes professions such as social work, biology, biomedicine, physical education, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, medicine, veterinary medicine, nutrition, dentistry, psychology, and occupational therapy. The present study aimed to analyze the influence of social networks in the process of finding and selectin

MSM at Highest Risk for HIV Acquisition Express Greatest Interest and Preference for Injectable Antiretroviral PrEP Compared to Daily, Oral Medication.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for nearly 70% of new HIV diagnoses, with young black MSM at the highest risk for infection in the United States. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can decrease HIV acquisition in at-risk individuals by over 90%. However, therapeutic efficacy requires a daily pill, posing adherence challenges. Experimental modalities, including injectable PrEP given once every 2 months, may improve adherence among those most in need. To assess interest in and preference for injectable PrEP, an online survey was mounted on two popular MSM sexual networking apps. Differences

Developing Social-ABI-lity: An Online Course to Support Safe Use of Social Media for Connection After Acquired Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: People who have an acquired brain injury (ABI) experience challenges using social media. Inversely, rehabilitation clinicians report feeling inadequately prepared to support them in its use. We aimed to develop a collaboratively designed, evidence-based online training resource to support people with an ABI to learn about using social media. Key recommendations for course design have previously been identified through a mixed methods approach, including (a) qualitative exploration of the experiences of people who use social media after ABI, (b) a scoping review to identify key feature

Uses and Grindifications: Examining the Motivators and Antecedents of Grindr Usage Among GBMSM.

Grindr is a popular geospatial networking application (GSNA) among gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men (GBMSM); it can be used for variety of goals (e.g. finding dates, making friends, or coordinating a hookup) depending on the user's wants. These needs and wants, however, do not arise in a vacuum. Informed by uses and gratification (U&G) theory, this paper examined individual factors such as race, body image and depression as drivers of the motivations behind Grindr usage In an online cross-sectional survey (N = 102), we explored the antecedents of six different motivations (i.e. fri

Social media use and positive aspects of caregiving: a longitudinal test of the social compensation hypothesis.

OBJECTIVES: Guided by the social compensation hypothesis, this study examined longitudinal pathways linking multidimensional social media use (SMU) to positive aspects of caregiving (PAC) among family caregivers of people with dementia. Specifically, we tested whether perceived social support (PSS) mediates the association between SMU and PAC and whether offline social network size moderates the SMU-PSS pathway. METHODS: A 3-wave time-lagged panel design was conducted over 6 months. Data were collected from a final analytic sample of 417 family caregivers in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Path

Cognitive mechanisms underlying the recall of positive relationships in social networks.

Humans are embedded in complex social networks. To utilize them, they regularly need to recall with whom they are connected. This recall is cognitively demanding and utilizes a variety of heuristic cognitive mechanisms. We empirically investigate traces of these mechanisms in the context of free and repeated recall of positive social relationships (friendships, positive interactions) within an emerging undergraduate student community ([Formula: see text] participants). Applying multinomial modeling, we study the specific sequences in which individuals recalled their peers when prompted in a re
