BACKGROUND: Chiasmatic and optic track lymphoma as the primary lesion of the central nervous system (CNS) is extremely rare.
OBSERVATIONS: … f primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL) was made.
LESSONS: To the authors' knowledge, PCNSL confined to the optic chiasm has rarely been reported in nonimmunocompromised patients. The present case of lymphoma affecting the optic chiasm and optic tract is extremely rare.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with pituitary insufficiency often experience some degree of impaired sleep. Sleep-wake rhythm is regulated to a large extent by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Because the SCN is located just superior to the optic chiasm, we hypothesized that a history of compression of the optic chiasm (CC) due to a tumour with suprasellar extension is associated with altered sleep patterns in patients with pituitary insufficiency.
DESIGN: Case-control study.
PATIENTS: We studied 38 patients (mean age 55·7 ± 13·1 years; 71·1% men) with CC and 18 patients (mean age 53·3 ± 16·6 years, …

BACKGROUND: The orbitozygomatic approach to the skull base has evolved over the past century, with a surge in development during the past 20 years. We describe an extension of this technique involving removal of the most inferior portion of the temporal bone to the level of the internal carotid artery as it enters the carotid canal, to further facilitate exposure of tumors in this region.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We performed the extended orbitozygomatic approach in a series of 17 patients with a variety of neoplastic lesions. Our case series was reviewed in a retrospective fashion, and our sur

Management of low grade optic glioma in children and adolescents remains controversial. Treatment with chemotherapy may delay or eliminate the need for radiation therapy. Children with newly diagnosed optic chiasm glioma were eligible for enrollment in this phase II trial and received intravenous carboplatin (CBDCA) (560 mg/m2) every four weeks. Patients were monitored closely for toxicity and tumor status. Twelve children were enrolled. Six patients had stable disease, four a partial response and two progressed on therapy. Overall progression free survival was 83 +/- 11%. The median duration …

BACKGROUND: The precise pathogenesis of anophthalmia/microphthalmia remains unknown. Prenatal observation of the optic chiasm in fetuses with this malformation would assist in understanding the embryonic development of the condition. The present study aimed to establish the normal fetal size ranges of decussation of the optic chiasm, optic nerves, and optic tracts in the axial plane using two-dimensional transabdominal ultrasound throughout gestation and to compare these ranges to the corresponding values in fetuses with anophthalmia/microphthalmia.
METHODS: In total, 310 normal fetuses and 1…

Irregular chiasm C (irreC) is an X-linked genetic function necessary for the correct projection of visual fibers in the optic chiasms of Drosophila optic ganglia. In addition to a severe disorganization of the inner optic chiasm irreC mutants display a subtle phenotype in the outer optic chiasm, in which some bundles of axons that leave the posterior equatorial part of the lamina on their way to the anterior medulla take a long detour before eventually finding their specific targets in the medulla neuropile. Deletion and recombination mapping of two irreC alleles (one P-element induced, the ot…

To assess the relative resolution of pMRI compared with MRI, the distance from the optic chiasm to the top of the third ventricle was measured, and the measurements were compared between paired equivalent slices on T2-weighted coronal images. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the characteristics and objective assessment method of visual field defects caused by optic chiasm and its posterior visual pathway injury.
METHODS: Typical cases of visual field defects caused by injuries to the optic chiasm, optic tracts, optic radiations, and visual cortex were selected. Visual field examinations, visual evoked potential (VEP) and multifocal visual evolved potential (mfVEP) measurements, craniocerebral CT/MRI, and retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed, respectively, and the aforementioned visual electrophysiological and neuroi…

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy for intracranial lesions is constrained by dose to neurologic organs at risk.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report 2 cases, a newly diagnosed chondrosarcoma and a previously irradiated meningioma, with tumors that abutted the optic chiasm following subtotal resection. Definitive radiotherapy would have required either undercoverage of the tumor or treatment of the chiasm with doses posing an unacceptable risk of blindness. Therefore, the patients underwent open surgery with placement of an abdominal fat autograft to provide space between the tumor and the optic structures…

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to measure the angle (Interneural angle, INA) between intracranial segments of optic nerves (ISON), and to look for any relation between it and the relative anteroposterior location (RAPL) of the optic chiasm (OC)-viz. prefixed, normofixed and postfixed.
METHODS: The sample comprised of 100 autopsy specimens from South Indian population. INA was measured using software-aided processing of digital photographs. Length of the ISON was measured on each side using Vernier calipers. RAPL of the OC was noted during dissection. These were analysed with statist…
