[Pain as an important symptom in trauma, diseases and movement disorders].

The author shows the importance of pain in motion organ diseases. He pointed out numerous orthopaedic conditions, such as inborn luxation of the hip joint, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, at the preliminary stage of procedure, produce no pain. There are also diseases such as Perthes disease or osteoporosis, whose pain are untypical and appear at the moment of the fracture of the bone trabecules. Transitory pains are very often downplayed by patients and physicians, which may lead to serious mistakes in diagnosis.

Unpredictable prey motion shapes behavior across time scales.

Locating, tracking and intercepting objects is a fundamental behavior for many organisms. For instance, predators must track and capture erratically moving prey for their survival. Using the echolocating bat as a model species, we investigated how short-term changes in target motion predictability affect longer-term motor plans when tracking a prey item. We used a paradigm where prey motion is under experimental control, and then applied computational methods to characterize how target motion predictability influences short- and long-term behavioral control. We found that target motion predict

An integrated model-driven method for in-treatment upper airway motion tracking using cine MRI in head and neck radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: For the first time, MRI-guided radiation therapy systems can acquire cine images to dynamically monitor in-treatment internal organ motion. However, the complex head and neck (H&N) structures and low-contrast/resolution of on-board cine MRI images make automatic motion tracking a very challenging task. In this study, the authors proposed an integrated model-driven method to automatically track the in-treatment motion of the H&N upper airway, a complex and highly deformable region wherein internal motion often occurs in an either voluntary or involuntary manner, from cine MRI images fo…

[Kidney as pacemaker for cardiovascular aging].

Kidney patients age faster and vascular risk factors intensify the process. Lifetime is reduced up to 16 years in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and kidney disease. SGLT2 inhibitors play a significant role in maintaining organ function. By inhibiting the SGLT2 transporter in the proximal tubule of the kidneys, energy and water are continuously excreted and metabolic processes that are counter-regulated are set in motion. This hypometabolic adaptation supports organ functions and induces longevity. Kidney protection extends life expectancy of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.Also

Space motion sickness: incidence, etiology, and countermeasures.

Space motion sickness is experienced by 60% to 80% of space travelers during their first 2 to 3 days in microgravity and by a similar proportion during their first few days after return to Earth. Space motion sickness symptoms are similar to those in other forms of motion sickness; they include: pallor, increased body warmth, cold sweating, malaise, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and anorexia. These are important because they may affect the operational performance of astronauts. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain space motion sickness: the fluid shift hypothesis and the

Assessment and validation of glottic motion using cone-beam CT and real-time cine MRI.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the margin for the planning target volume (PTV) using the Van Herk formula. We then validated the proposed margin by real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: An analysis of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data from early glottic cancer patients was performed to evaluate organ motion. Deformed clinical target volumes (CTV) after rigid registration were acquired using the Velocity program (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA, USA). Systematic (Σ) and random errors (σ) were evaluated. The margin for the PTV was defined as 2.5 Σ + 0.7 σ accor…

Saturation transfer EPR studies of membrane alteration in hereditary spherocytosis.

Our earlier spin label electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of hereditary spherocytosis (HS) erythrocyte revealed the existence of structural alteration(s) when the membrane is subjected to heat stress. We have now used saturation transfer EPR to show restricted motion in membrane proteins even without subjecting membrane to stress. The abnormal motional behavior is amplified when membranes are incubated at 47 degrees C and is readily detectable by conventional EPR. Gel electrophoresis and lipid assays show that proteins but not lipids are released upon heating. Thus, the more restric

Motion-tolerant 3D volumetric multimodality microscopy imaging of human skin with subcellular resolution and extended field-of-view.

The skin, the body's largest organ, has a heterogeneous structure with various cell types and tissue layers. In vivo noninvasive 3D volumetric imaging with multi-contrast, high resolution, a large field-of-view (FOV), and no-motion artifacts is crucial for studying skin biology and diagnosing/evaluating diseases. Traditionally high-resolution in vivo skin microscopy methods capture images in the en-face (xy) plane parallel to the skin surface but are affected by involuntary motion, particularly during large-area volumetric data acquisition using xy-z mosaicking. In this work, we developed an x

OpticalFlow3D - a tool for measuring amorphous motion in three-dimensional fluorescence microscopy images.

Motion is an essential component of any living system. It is rich with information, but it is often challenging to quantitatively extract biologically informative results from the motion apparent in microscopy images. This challenge is exacerbated by the wide variety in biological movement, which often takes the form of difficult-to-segment amorphous structures undergoing complex motion. An image processing technique known as optical flow can capture motion at each pixel in an image, thus bypassing the need for object segmentation or prior definition of motion types. This makes it a powerful t

A dual-Kinect approach to determine torso surface motion for respiratory motion correction in PET.

PURPOSE: Respiratory gating is commonly used to reduce blurring effects and attenuation correction artifacts in positron emission tomography (PET). Established clinically available methods that employ body-attached hardware for acquiring respiration signals rely on the assumption that external surface motion and internal organ motion are well correlated. In this paper, the authors present a markerless method comprising two Microsoft Kinects for determining the motion on the whole torso surface and aim to demonstrate its validity and usefulness-including the potential to study the external/inte…

Motion sickness induced by off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR).

We tested the hypothesis that motion sickness is produced by an integration of the disparity between eye velocity and the yaw-axis orientation vector of velocity storage. Disparity was defined as the magnitude of the cross product between these two vectors. OVAR, which is known to produce motion sickness, generates horizontal eye velocity with a bias level related to velocity storage, as well as cyclic modulations due to re-orientation of the head re gravity. On average, the orientation vector is close to the spatial vertical. Thus, disparity can be related to the bias and tilt angle. Motion s

The neural basis of motion sickness.

Although motion of the head and body has been suspected or known as the provocative cause for the production of motion sickness for centuries, it is only within the last 20 yr that the source of the signal generating motion sickness and its neural basis has been firmly established. Here, we briefly review the source of the conflicts that cause the body to generate the autonomic signs and symptoms that constitute motion sickness and provide a summary of the experimental data that have led to an understanding of how motion sickness is generated and can be controlled. Activity and structures that

[Multiple microthromboses with autoimmune hemolytic anemia after BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination].

A 68-year-old man was referred to our hospital with dizziness and mild fever one week after receiving the second dose of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2). Laboratory tests showed hemolytic anemia and a positive direct Coombs test, and he was diagnosed with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). On admission, the patient had impaired consciousness with auditory hallucinations, and a head MRI scan showed multiple high-signal areas on diffusion-weighted imaging, suggesting multiple recent infarctions. Echocardiography also showed decreased wall motion in the inferior and posterior walls. A skin

Infective rhomboencephalitis and inverted Takotsubo: neurogenic-stunned myocardium or myocarditis?

Here we originally describe the clinical scenario of a young immune-competent patient affected by acute rhomboencephalitis with severe parenchymal edema and acute hydrocephalus who developed sudden life-threatening cardiac derangement. Hemodynamic and perfusion parameters revealed cardiogenic shock, so intensive circulatory support with epinephrine infusion and intra-aortic balloon pump was needed to restore organ perfusion. Transesophageal echocardiographic examination showed severe left ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction as low as 20%) with wall motion abnormalities resembling a patt

Three-dimensional computed tomography analysis of neoglottis after supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy.

INTRODUCTION: Supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy is an organ-preserving procedure used to treat laryngeal cancer. However, the post-operative neoglottis tends to be variable in form and difficult to predict. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed three-dimensional images reconstructed from multidetector-row computed tomography data for 21 patients, assessing arytenoid motion and minimum neoglottic gap cross-sectional area. RESULTS: While mean transverse and coronal motion was similar for bilateral and unilateral arytenoids, movement along the sagittal axis was greater for

Spontaneous synchronization of motion in pedestrian crowds of different densities.

Interacting pedestrians in a crowd spontaneously adjust their footsteps and align their respective stepping phases. This self-organization phenomenon is known as synchronization. However, it is unclear why and how synchronization forms spontaneously under different density conditions, or what functional benefit synchronization offers for the collective motion of humans. Here, we conducted a single-file crowd motion experiment that directly tracked the alternating movement of both legs of interacting pedestrians. We show that synchronization is most likely to be triggered at the same density at

Long term and robust 6DoF motion tracking for highly dynamic stereo endoscopy videos.

Real-time augmented reality (AR) for minimally invasive surgery without extra tracking devices is a valuable yet challenging task, especially considering dynamic surgery environments. Multiple different motions between target organs are induced by respiration, cardiac motion or operative tools, and often must be characterized by a moving, manually positioned endoscope. Therefore, a 6DoF motion tracking method that takes advantage of the latest 2D target tracking methods and non-linear pose optimization and tracking loss retrieval in SLAM technologies is proposed and can be embedded into such a

Bioinspired Soft Robotic Fingers with Sequential Motion Based on Tendon-Driven Mechanisms.

The conformability is yet a challenge for most soft robotic grippers due to the continuous motion and deformation of these machines under external force. Herein, inspired by the movement mechanism of human fingers, we propose a novel tendon-driven soft robotic finger with a preprogrammed bending configuration and a human finger like sequential motion that can be obtained by matching the stiffness gradient of the finger joints with three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. The contents of this article are organized as follows. First, the effect of the anisotropy caused by 3D printing filling

Dosimetric robustness of urethra sparing in ultrahypofractionated prostate SBRT using catheter-based motion tracking.

PURPOSE: In ultrahypofractionated prostate stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), genitourinary toxicity is the primary concern. Urethra sparing is a strategy to mitigate potential negative effects of higher single doses to the urethra and bladder neck. We report on the dosimetric robustness of urethra sparing using a catheter-based real-time monitoring device to track both interfractional variability and intrafractional motion. METHODS: In 12 patients undergoing prostate ultrahypofractionated radiotherapy (UHFX), intrafractional prostate motion was monitored using a HypoCath catheter (M
