PURPOSE: To analyze the D2 cc hot spot in three-dimensional CT and anatomic factors affecting the D2 cc hot spot in organs at risk (OARs).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty-one patients underwent pelvic CT scan after insertion of the applicator. High-dose-rate treatment planning was performed with standard loading patterns. The D2 cc structures in OARs were generated in three dimensional if the total equivalent dose in 2 Gy exceeded our defined dose limits (hot spot). The location of D2 cc hot spot was defined as the center of the largest D2 cc fragment. The relationship between the hot spot and

Modern sunscreen products provide broad-spectrum UV protection and may contain one or several UV filters. A modern UV filter should be heat and photostable, water resistant, nontoxic, and easy to formulate. Identification of a substance that meets these criteria is as difficult as discovering a new drug; hundreds of new molecules are synthesized and screened before a lead candidate is identified. The most important aspect in the development of a new UV filter is its safety. In our laboratories, the safety of new ultraviolet filters is assessed by an initial in vitro screen including photostabi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High-dose-rate endobronchial brachytherapy (HDR-BTE) is an effective technique for the treatment of malignant tracheobronchial tumors. Although two-dimensional (2D) planning provides limited dosimetric information and does not accurately assess the relationship between the catheter and the tumor or the dose delivered to organs at risk (OARs), it continues to be used because it ensures adequate PTV coverage, is associated with low toxicity, and minimizes the risk of catheter displacement by avoiding patient transfer to the CT simulation room.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cervical cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer among women in numerous low and middle-income countries. Tandem-based applicator is a widely used technique in High Dose Rate Intercavitary Brachytherapy (HDR-ICBT) for treating cervical cancer. For cases where central tandem insertion is not feasible due to patient-specific conditions, a ring-only applicator is used as an alternative. This paper presents an assessment of the impacts of dose distribution on cervical cancer treatment using HDR-ICBT without a central tandem applicator.

The objective of this paper is to give some practical landmarks for the delineation of target volumes and organs at risk in Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma. This delineation, drawn from anatomo-clinical data, natural history of the disease and radiological pre-treatment evaluation, seems to be easier to define than the delineation of other head and neck cancer localisations (oropharynx and oral cavity for example). Experience inside national and international cooperative groups should tend to standardize this initial and fundamental step of Nasopharyngeal Con

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Various deep learning auto-segmentation (DLAS) models have been proposed, some of which have been commercialized. However, the issue of performance degradation is notable when pretrained models are deployed in the clinic. This study aims to enhance precision of a popular commercial DLAS product in rectal cancer radiotherapy by localized fine-tuning, addressing challenges in practicality and generalizability in real-world clinical settings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 Stage II/III mid-low rectal cancer patients were retrospectively enrolled and divided into th

CONTEXT: Postoperative periampullary cancers with high risk features are managed with adjuvant chemo radiotherapy. Doses of 40-50 Gy have generally been used in conventional radiotherapy. Dose escalation with conventional radiotherapy has been restricted due to surrounding critical organs.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this dosimetric analysis was to evaluate the dose of radiation received by organs at risk using 3D conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).
METHODS: Ten postoperative patients of periampullary cancers were selected for this dosimetric analysis.

PURPOSE: Anatomic changes occur during radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck (H&N) tumors. This study aims at quantifying the volumetric and positional changes of gross tumor volumes (GTV), clinical target volumes (CTV), and organs at risk (OAR). Anatomic (CT) and functional (FDG-PET) imaging were used for the delineation of the GTVs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with H&N tumors treated by chemo-RT were used. Contrast-enhanced CT and FDG-PET were acquired prior and during RT following delivery of mean doses of 14.2, 24.5, 35.0, and 44.9 Gy. CT-based GTVs were manually delineated, an

PURPOSE: To develop a videofluoroscopy-based predictive model of radiation-induced dysphagia (RID) by incorporating DVH parameters of swallowing organs at risk (SWOARs) in a machine learning analysis.
METHODS: Videofluoroscopy (VF) was performed to assess the penetration-aspiration score (P/A) at baseline and at 6 and 12 months after RT. An RID predictive model was developed using dose to nine SWOARs and P/A-VF data at 6 and 12 months after treatment. A total of 72 dosimetric features for each patient were extracted from DVH and analyzed with linear support vector machine classification (SVC)

In the last decade, many efforts have been made to characterize anatomic changes of head and neck organs at risk (OARs) and the dosimetric consequences during radiotherapy. This review was undertaken to provide an overview of the magnitude and frequency of these effects, and to investigate whether we could find criteria to identify head and neck cancer patients who may benefit from adaptive radiotherapy (ART). Possible relationships between anatomic and dosimetric changes and outcome were explicitly considered. A literature search according to PRISMA guidelines was performed in MEDLINE and EMB

BACKGROUND: Biological aging varies across individuals and tissues, influencing chronic diseases, including heart failure (HF). Emerging proteome techniques enable quantification of organ-specific aging acceleration (OAA), but whether OAA relates to HF severity and differs by sex remains unclear. We aim to assess the sex-related association between OAA of heart, artery and kidneys and HF severity, and to investigate relevant cardiometabolic risk factors of organ aging.
METHODS: In 556 participants from the HELPFul cohort, we estimated predicted biological age for heart, artery, and kidneys us

This letter provides a critical appraisal of the comprehensive meta-analysis by Hou et al, which synthesizes the incidence and risk factors for postoperative delirium (POD) in organ transplant recipients. Their work establishes a pooled POD incidence of 20%, with significant variability across organ types (lung 34%, liver 22%, kidney 6%), and identifies key risk factors including primary graft dysfunction, hepatic encephalopathy, and high model for end-stage liver disease/acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II scores. This commentary acknowledges the study's strength in providing a

The standard treatment for end-stage organ failure is transplantation, but demand for organs has always vastly outstripped supply. Discussions are ongoing about the feasibility of addressing the organ shortage through measures like increasing organ donations, improving post-transplant outcomes, and xenotransplantation. This paper examines the rationale, risks, and costs of xenotransplantation, such as xenozoonoses, creating a new form of industrialized animal farming, abandoning animal ethics principles, and the opportunity costs of investing finite research dollars in xenotransplantation inst
