Transverse dentoalveolar changes of mandibular canine and premolar regions after lip bumper therapy: a retrospective CBCT study.

OBJECTIVES: Lip bumpers (LB) treatment has been used to expand the mandibular arch during mixed dentition. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of LB on the mandibular transverse changes in the canine and premolar regions using CBCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study utilized pre- (T1) and post-treatment (T2) CBCT images from the children who were treated either with rapid maxillary expander (RME) alone (RME group) or with RME and lip bumpers (RME + LB group) for interceptive orthodontic treatment. The T1 (pre-interceptive orthodontic treatment evaluation) and T2 (pr

The William Houston Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 2010.

This paper describes the clinical orthodontic treatment of two cases treated by the recipient of the 2010 Membership in Orthodontics William Houston Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The first case describes a three-phase treatment approach to correct a class II division 2 malocclusion on a non-extraction basis. The second case describes the treatment of a class III malocclusion with a notable unilateral crossbite using a quad-helix, a single premolar extraction and upper and lower pre-adjusted fixed appliances.

Obstruction of the eruption pathway by peripheral odontogenic fibroma: report of a patient.

The diagnostic process and interdisciplinary treatment of a healthy 12-year-old boy with impactions due to a localized peripheral odontogenic fibroma are presented. The treatment consisted of the surgical excision of the peripheral odontogenic fibroma and interceptive orthodontic treatment with an activator appliance to allow the passive eruption of the impacted teeth. Complete orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances was used later to level and coordinate the arches. This report illustrates the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of tooth impactions associated with diffuse gingival

Condylar hyperplasia causing progressive facial asymmetry during orthodontic treatment--a case report.

Condylar hyperplasia is defined and its aetiology and prevalence are briefly reviewed. A case is presented to illustrate how the progressive nature of the condition can create problems for the clinician, particularly during orthodontic treatment of a child or adolescent patient. The benefits of interceptive surgery are illustrated, although such an approach does not necessarily mean that further surgery is avoided at the completion of growth.

Post-traumatic impaction of maxillary incisors: diagnosis and treatment.

AIM: To provide clinicians with useful information for immediate diagnosis and management of impacted maxillary incisors due to trauma. METHODS: We present a case of post-traumatic impaction of a central right maxillary incisor in a young patient. The treatment plan consisted in the interceptive management (surgical and orthodontic), the valuation of the necessary space to move the impacted tooth in the normal position and the biomechanical approach for anchorage, avoiding prosthetic/implants replacement. RESULTS: THE THERAPY OF AN IMPACTED MAXILLARY INCISOR DUE TO TRAUMA REQUIRES A MULTIDIS

Congenital macroglossia: surgical and orthodontic management.

OBJECTIVES: A case of congenital macroglossia is reported. The most important sign of macroglossia is tongue protrusion through the lips. Tongue protrusion might influence skeletal growth and can cause anterior open bite, proclination of upper and lower incisors and development of diastemas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 4 year-old female patient was diagnosed with congenital macroglossia. Parents referred an abnormal tongue dimension since birth and the development of a progressive anterior open bite. The treatment of macroglossia included tongue reduction by partial glossectomy. She was seen reg

Functional appliance treatment for bilateral condylar fracture in a pediatric patient.

Trauma to the mandible may cause condylar fracture (CF). The prevalence of CF in children is low and treatment must focus on possible long-term effects on the growing facial skeleton and soft tissues. Consequences may include functional disturbances, facial asymmetry, mandibular retrusion, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and ankylosis. Conservative treatment, including close observation, soft diet, physiotherapy, and functional appliances, is advised in most cases. The purpose of this report was to describe the case of a pediatric female patient with bilateral condylar fracture. Treatment

Upper Jaw Development After Lingual Laser Frenectomy and Myofuntional Therapy.

AIM: Over the years, the role of the lingual frenulum in the development of skeletal structures has been evaluated. However, the effect of short lingual frenulum treatment on bone structures is unclear. We need to investigate the effect of surgery and myofunctional therapy on maxillary development. This could be the rationale to establish an orthodontic interception protocol. METHODS: The case-control study was carried out in the Operative Unit of Pedodontics of the University Dental Clinic, at the Department of Medical, Oral and Biotechnological Sciences of the University of "G. D'Annunzio"

Craniofacial Deformities in Patients With Beta-Thalassemia: Orthodontic Versus Surgical Correction-A Systematic Review.

Rapid blood cell turnover and bone marrow expansion caused by beta-thalassemia (βT) result in craniofacial and dentoalveolar anomalies. This report presents a systematic review of the literature over the past 50 years on orthodontic and surgical considerations in the management of βT-affected patients. Seventeen publications encompassed 24 patients, 11 male individuals and 13 female individuals, 7 to 43 years of age. Eleven patients underwent only surgical treatment, eleven combined orthodontic-surgical treatment, and 2 orthodontic treatment. Surgical treatment primarily addressed typical maxi

Expert consensus on pediatric orthodontic therapies of malocclusions in children.

Malocclusion, identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of three major oral diseases, profoundly impacts the dental-maxillofacial functions, facial esthetics, and long-term development of ~260 million children in China. Beyond its physical manifestations, malocclusion also significantly influences the psycho-social well-being of these children. Timely intervention in malocclusion can foster an environment conducive to dental-maxillofacial development and substantially decrease the incidence of malocclusion or reduce the severity and complexity of malocclusion in the permanent de

To what extent do deviations from an ideal occlusion constitute a health risk?

Selection of patients for orthodontic treatment should be based on a thorough analysis of the consequences of malocclusions for the individual. The mere presence of deviations from the concept of the ideal occlusion should have no influence on orthodontic treatment decisions. According to available studies, the influence of malocclusion on periodontal health, speech and chewing is fairly minor. Neither can orthodontic treatment be justified as an effective means of preventing TMD but it may be indicated to reduce existing signs and symptoms of TMD in certain carefully selected cases. Hemisection versus conventional extraction as interceptive treatment in congenitally missing mandibular second premolars: a randomised controlled split-mouth trial.

BACKGROUND: The congenital absence of mandibular second premolars is a common anomaly requiring careful treatment planning. Conventional extraction of the primary molar often causes spontaneous space closure but may lead to mesial tipping of adjacent teeth. Hemisection offers an alternative to control tooth movement and reduce tipping. However, evidence comparing hemisection and conventional extraction, particularly on space closure and tooth angulation, is limited. OBJECTIVES: To compare conventional extraction with hemisection of the mandibular primary second molars in terms of space closur
