BACKGROUND: For the experimental animal study to evaluate a new ossicular chain replacement prosthesis, we developed a new technique for surgical implantation into the middle ear of rabbits. The selection of the species was based on its similarity to human middle ear anatomy and the favored, standardized, microsurgical approach to the middle ear cavity.
METHOD: For the study we included a total of 34 approximately 6-month-old female white rabbits (New Zealand) with a weight of 3.2 to 4.4 kg. The implants used were constructed of ceramic materials TiO(2) (titania) with different pore size. Dir

OBJECTIVES: To compare the hearing outcomes of ossicular chain reconstruction using bone cement versus other materials such as prostheses and autografts.
METHODS: This study included articles that compared hearing outcomes in patients with conductive hearing loss who underwent stapes revision surgery or chronic otitis media surgery. A systematic search for articles from January 2000 to February 2022 was conducted in Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. Only articles in English were included. An effective postoperative air-bone gap (ABG) was defined as ≤20 dB. A bias assessment too

OBJECTIVES: The main goal of the present study was to assess hearing outcome for malleus removal in cholesteatoma surgery compared to a group with malleus conservation. The secondary aim was to compare the auditory involvement of the stapes between the two groups.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-center observational study included adult patients operated on by ossiculoplasty for acquired cholesteatoma between 2015 and 2019. Endpoints comprised improvement in pure-tone average air-bone gap (PTA-ABG) and air-bone gap (ABG) at conversational frequencies and, independently, per frequency. 136 pati

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of ossiculoplasty procedures in the paediatric population when the Kurz titanium ossicular prosthesis is used.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data was collected prospectively upon 14 ossiculoplasty cases using Kurz titanium prostheses. Audiological parameters using four frequency average (FFA(0.5, 1, 2 and 4kHz)) were assessed pre- and post-operatively.
RESULTS: In the case of patients reconstructed using partial ossicular reconstruction prostheses, 7/9 (78%) achieved an air bone gap (<20dB) using FFA criteria. Parameters at 12-month fo

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the surgical outcomes of partial ossicular replacement prosthesis (PORP) and total ossicular replacement prosthesis (TORP) in class III congenital middle ear anomalies (CMEAs) based on stapes suprastructure integrity and to propose a refined Teunissen-Cremers classification.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: A tertiary academic medical center.
METHODS: Forty-nine ears from 46 patients with class III CMEAs who underwent ossiculoplasty from 2012 to 2024 were included. Patients were categorized into the viable suprastructure group (26 e

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that current clinical treatment strategies for the disarticulated or eroded incus have the effect of combining the incus and stapes of the human middle ear (ME) into one rigid structure, which, while capable of adequately transmitting lower-frequency sounds, fails for higher frequencies.
BACKGROUND: ME damage causes conductive hearing loss (CHL) and while great progress has been made in repairing or reconstructing damaged MEs, the outcomes are often far from ideal.
METHODS: Temporal bones (TBs) from human cadavers, a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV), and a fiber-opti

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
METHODS: From April to May 2023, 18 ossiculoplasties using the new semi-synthetic TORP were performed by the first author. In all patients, the new semi-synthetic TORP was placed between the stapes footplate and the tympanic membrane, both in the presence and absence of the stapes superstructure. The primary outcome was the long-term postoperative air-bone gap (ABG). Hearing stability over time was assessed by compari

BACKGROUND: A dehiscence of a semicircular canal can mimic the audiologic characteristics of otosclerosis.
OBJECTIVE: To present a unique case report of a patient presenting with stapes fixation due to otosclerosis but persisting conductive hearing loss after uneventful laser-assisted stapedotomy with interposition of an àWengen titanium clip stapes prosthesis. Eventually, a bilateral bony dehiscence between the apical turn of the cochlea and the internal carotid artery was eventually identified, which explained the persisting postoperative conductive hearing loss. OBJECTIVES: Modern passive middle ear titanium prostheses are filigree structures, resulting in poorer depiction on CT compared to prostheses used in the past. We compared the visibility of newer prostheses on cone beam CT (CBCT) to multi-detector CT (MDCT) with standard and lower dose in vitro, and analysed image noise and metal artefacts.
METHODS: Six different titanium middle ear prostheses (three partial and one total ossicular replacement prostheses, two stapes prostheses) were implanted twice in formalin-fixed head specimens-first correctly and then with displacement. Imaging was perfor

The usage of finite element method techniques gives a possibility to replace time-consuming experiments or imitate physical process in the ear by numerical simulation. Especially, the research of spatial motion of ossicular chain in the middle ear is of high interest for the oto-surgeons and engineers. It is known that the most affected bone from the ossicular chain is the incus. After the cholesteatoma operation and tympanoplasty, the affected incus is removed or sacrificed; thus, the possibility of transducing noise lays on the stapes, new titanium or other material prosthesis. In this case,

OBJECTIVES: To report an extremely rare case of malleoincudal osteoma that led to conductive hearing loss despite an unusually normal otomicroscopic appearance, and to highlight the usefulness of costal cartilage for ossicular chain reconstruction after tumour removal.

OBJECTIVES: After middle ear reconstruction using partial or total ossicular replacement prostheses (PORP/TORP), an air-bone gap (ABG) may persist because of prosthesis displacement or malposition. So far, CT of the temporal bone has played the main role in the diagnosis of reasons for postoperative insufficient ABG improvement. Recent experimental and clinical studies have evaluated flat panel CT (fpCT) as an alternative imaging technique that provides images with high isovolumetric resolution, fewer metal-induced artefacts and lower irradiation doses.
METHODS: One hundred and seven consecut

CONCLUSION: The Vibrant Soundbridge offers an excellent audiologic rehabilitation for toddlers with microtia and atresia. It provides direct stimulation of the cochlea and straightforward adaption to the given anatomical structures. The 'posterior atresia incision' preserves the physical integrity of the tissue layers around the ear remnant, which is essential for an aesthetic auricular reconstruction.
OBJECTIVES: Patients with bilateral aural atresia require immediate auditory stimulation to ensure normal speech development. We present an operative technique that allows safe restoration of h
