Heterotopic ossification with femoral vein compression mimicking deep vein thrombosis.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) in patients with spinal cord injury could lead to local tissue swelling and sometimes mimic the clinical presentation of deep vein thrombosis. Recognition and effective management is critical. We report the case of a bedridden patient with spinal cord injury presenting with diffuse right lower limb swelling caused by external venous compression from HO. The patient underwent surgery and local radiation therapy. Postoperative venography disclosed a marked improvement in the blood flow, and symptoms were alleviated. We discuss the role of venography in the diagnosis

Therapeutic advances for blocking heterotopic ossification in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disease in which heterotopic bone forms in muscle and soft tissue, leading to joint dysfunction and significant disability. FOP is progressive and many patients are wheelchair-bound by the 3rd decade of life. FOP is caused by an activating mutation in the ACVR1 gene, which encodes the activin A Type 1 receptor. Aberrant signalling through this receptor leads to abnormal activation of the pSMAD 1/5/8 pathway and triggers the formation of bone outside of the skeleton. There is no curative therapy for FOP; however, exciting advances in

Heterotopic Ossification Formation Following a Simple Concussion: A Case Report.

CASE: A 19-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of an enlarging lesion on the proximal aspect of the femur. After imaging studies and a biopsy had been performed, the mass was determined to represent heterotopic ossification (HO). The only known risk factor was a history of concussion. The mass was resected and, as of the 12-month follow-up, had not recurred. CONCLUSION: HO is a potentially serious complication of ossification in soft tissues that can develop secondary to several disease states; it commonly occurs following traumatic brain injury. To our knowledge, this is the only

Spontaneous Knee Ankylosis through Heterotopic Ossification after Total Knee Arthroplasty.

This paper reports on a case of total ankylosis of the knee after a cruciate-sacrificing cemented total knee arthroplasty (TKA). An 82-year-old female patient previously underwent primary TKA for osteoarthritis twenty years ago in our institution. She had recovered uneventfully and returned to her regular activities. There was no history of postsurgical trauma; however, she progressively lost knee range of motion. Radiographs revealed severe bridging heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic intra-abdominal ossification in a complex ventral hernia defect.

Heterotopic ossification, an entity common in orthopaedic practice frequently involving the hip, knee or other joints, is rarely encountered in abdominal wounds and mesentery. This unusual condition, referred to as mesenteric ossification, is typically associated with intra-abdominal catastrophes. Surgical repair following such catastrophes has always been a challenge as the abdominal wall architecture is frequently distorted by the multiple laparotomies previously performed. In addition, the presence of several enterocutaneous fistulae further compounds the reconstruction approach, especially

Early presentation of heterotopic ossification mimicking pyomyositis - two case reports -.

Early diagnosis and treatment of heterotopic ossification (HO) is essential to the prevention of complications. It is difficult to diagnose HO in its initial phase because non-specific clinical manifestations, laboratory findings and imaging findings of immature HO may mimic other diseases such as cellulitis, osteomyelitis, thrombophlebitis, deep vein thrombosis and local infection with abscess. We experienced two cases of HO, which were misdiagnosed as pyomyositis at first by clinical signs and MRI findings indicating the deep infection; the extensive intramuscular ossification appeared later

Prevention of heterotopic ossification after total hip replacement with NSAIDs.

INTRODUCTION: Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and prophylactic radiotherapy can prevent ectopic bone formation around the hip after total hip arthroplasty. METHODS: We retrieved from Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Register (clinical) trials and other relevant literature on the prevention of heterotopic ossification (HO) from 1990-2002 for further review. RESULTS: Review of these clinical trials shows that HO is effectively prevented by a postoperative NSAID treatment with indomethacin for at least seven days. The best evidence is available for indomethacin, although naproxen

Surgical approaches for nonneurogenic elbow heterotopic ossification with ulnar neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Few reports are available concerning elbow heterotopic ossification (HO) and its optimal management in nonneurologic or nonburn patients after repetitive elbow manipulation. The unique anatomic relationship of the ulnar nerve at the elbow renders it rather vulnerable to injury when elbow HO occurs medially or posteromedially and extends into the vicinity of the cubital tunnel. METHODS: A total of 16 consecutive patients without neurologic injury were diagnosed with heterotopic ossification formation in the elbow and referred to the Upper Extremity Unit of Chang Gung Memorial Hospi

Heterotopic ossification and peripheral nerve entrapment: early diagnosis and excision.

Heterotopic ossification can occur in neurologic disorders, burns, musculoskeletal trauma, and metabolic disorders. In addition to producing the complications of contracture, skin breakdown, and pain, it can cause peripheral nerve entrapment. Nerve entrapment due to heterotopic ossification may be misdiagnosed, and it is difficult to evaluate and treat without recurrence. Computed tomography is especially useful in localization before surgical release of the entrapped nerve. Resection of heterotopic ossification can be successful using disodium etidronate to decrease the risk of recurrence, an

Extensive progressive heterotopic ossification post-Covid-19 in a man.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of extraskeletal bone in muscle and soft tissues and could be genetic or non-genetic. The classic presentation of non-genetic HO is in young adults with a clear history of local trauma, surgery or prolonged immobilization after spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. Genetic HO has a significant clinical severity compared to non-genetic causes and includes fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). FOP is an extremely rare genetic skeletal disorder characterized by congenital malformations of the great toes and progressive heterotopic ossifica

Preoperative arterial embolization of heterotopic ossification around the hip joint.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) around the hip joint is not uncommon following neurological injury. Often, surgical treatment is performed in patients with restricted motion and/or refractory pain due to grade III or IV HO according to Brooker classification. The major complication that occurs as a result of surgical HO removal is perioperative bleeding due to hyper-vascularization of the lesion. Here, we report a case of preoperative embolization in a 51-year-old male patient presenting with restricted bilateral hip range of motion (ROM) due to HO following a spinal cord injury. In the right hi

Testicular Dose During Prophylaxis of Heterotopic Ossification with Radiation Therapy.

AIM: A single-institution, retrospective study was performed to investigate potential techniques to minimize radiation exposure to the testicles during heterotopic ossification (HO) prophylaxis. We report the impact of split-beam technique (SBT) and different photon energies on the total dose of radiation received by the testicles during prophylaxis of HO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2008 and 2010, we identified 64 patients with traumatic acetabular fractures who underwent surgery followed by radiation therapy (RT) without testicular shielding. Postoperative RT was delivered within 72 h in

Heterotopic ossification following anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is defined as the formation of true bone tissue in non-osseous tissues. HO may occur under several conditions such as soft tissue injury, central nervous system injury and many other diseases like arthopathies, and vasculopathies. The underlying mechanisms of HO are not well elucidated. Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis is a newly recognized autoimmune mediated disease which is predominant in young female patients with ovarian teratomas. Encephalitis complicated with HO has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a case of anti-NMDA rece

Heterotopic ossification associated with myelopathy following cervical disc prosthesis implantation.

This case report presents a 37-year-old man with clinical signs of myelopathy almost 9 years after implantation of a Bryan disc prosthesis (Medtronic Sofamor Danek, Memphis, TN, USA) for C5/C6 soft disc herniation. As demonstrated on MRI and CT scan, spinal cord compression was caused by bony spurs due to heterotopic ossification posterior to the still moving prosthesis. The device, as well as the ectopic bone deposits, had to be removed because of myelopathy and its imminent aggravation. Conversion to anterior spondylodesis was performed.

Bioburden Increases Heterotopic Ossification Formation in an Established Rat Model.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) develops in a majority of combat-related amputations wherein early bacterial colonization has been considered a potential early risk factor. Our group has recently developed a small animal model of trauma-induced HO that incorporates many of the multifaceted injury patterns of combat trauma in the absence of bacterial contamination and subsequent wound colonization. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We sought to determine if (1) the presence of bioburden (Acinetobacter baumannii and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA]) increases the magnitude of ecto

Easy interpretation of heterotopic ossification demonstrated on bone SPECT/CT.

A 29-year-old male patient suffered from paraplegia 6 months after brain injury. Heterotopic ossification was diagnosed based on clinical characteristics such as decreased range of motion at the bilateral hips without infective signs. A planar bone scintigraphy using Tc-MDP showed intensive radiotracer accumulation in the proximal portion of the bilateral femurs and the right acetabulum. The SPECT/CT images showed increased radiotracer accumulation in the adjacent soft tissues of the bilateral hips but not in the bone. The conservative treatment rather than surgical intervention was given acco

Risk factors for heterotopic ossification in primary total hip arthroplasty.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a recognised complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study aims to correlate demographics, surgical approach and type of arthroplasty to the incidence of HO in an attempt to quantify patient risk. A total of 920 primary THAs in 893 patients were performed between 2006 and 2008 in a single arthroplasty centre. Radiographic evaluation was conducted and all cases of HO were classified using the Brooker classification. Age, sex, arthroplasty type and surgical approach were all considered as variables. Arthroplasty type was classified into four groups; to
