Experimental infections of pigs and mice with selected genotypes of Ascaris.

Extending a previous investigation of the genotypic variability within Ascaris from humans and pigs, experimental infections of mice and pigs with selected genotypes of Ascaris were performed in the present study to explore possible host affiliation. Initial findings indicate that there is a significant difference in the ability of Ascaris eggs of genotype G1 (derived from human) and G3 (derived from pig) to infect and establish as larvae in mice and as adults in pigs, supporting the difference in the frequencies of the genotypes reported previously in natural Ascaris populations in pigs and h

Ascaris lumbricoides infection in pre-school children from Chiriqui Province, Panama.

An epidemiological survey of intestinal parasitic infections was conducted in a sample of 203 children aged 3-5 years from a semi-urban and a rural community in Chiriqui, Panama, in 1983-4. On the basis of stool examinations, the prevalences of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworm, Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba spp. and Strongyloides stercoralis were found to be 27, 34, 14, 15, 5 and 4% respectively. The results from children from the two communities were compared. Polyparasitism occurred significantly more often in rural than semi-urban children. Following anthelmintic treatm

Intestinal parasitic infections of men in four regions of rural Kenya.

Faecal samples were obtained from 906 men living in four different regions of rural Kenya: the cool Highlands, the humid coastal lowlands, the equatorial Lake Victoria basin and the arid marginal highlands. The prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections is reported and compared, contrasted and discussed in terms of the typical environmental conditions in each region. Almost 70% of men appeared to be infected with intestinal helminths; hookworm was most common. The regional prevalence of hookworm infections appeared to be related to relative humidity.

[Growth of Balantidium coli populations under in vivo and in vitro conditions].

Trophozoites of Balantidium coli were isolated from the pig's caecum and cultivated in vitro. Pigs were divided into two groups: one with the acute balantidiosis and the second--with the asymptomatic balantidiosis. In the first case the biotic potential of protozoans turned out to be higher (the most intensive divisions occurred 24 hours after the second passage). Protozoans isolated from pigs with the asymptomatic balantidiosis had lower biotic potential (the most intensive divisions occurred 24 hours after the third passage). This fact indicates the differentiation of the investigated popula

A low-cost, automated parasite diagnostic system via a portable, robotic microscope and deep learning.

Manual hand counting of parasites in fecal samples requires costly components and substantial expertise, limiting its use in resource-constrained settings and encouraging overuse of prophylactic medication. To address this issue, a cost-effective, automated parasite diagnostic system that does not require special sample preparation or a trained user was developed. It is composed of an inexpensive (~US$350), portable, robotic microscope that can scan over the size of an entire McMaster chamber (100 mm2 ) and capture high-resolution (~1 μm lateral resolution) bright field images without need for

Strongyle infections and parasitic control strategies in German horses - a risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: As a consequence of the increasing levels of anthelmintic resistance in cyathostomes, new strategies for equine parasite control are being implemented. To assess the potential risks of these, the occurrence of strongyles was evaluated in a group of 1887 horses. The distribution of fecal egg counts (FECs), the frequency of anthelmintic drug use, and the deworming intervals were also analyzed. Between June 2012 and May 2013, 1887 fecal samples from either selectively or strategically dewormed horses were collected at 195 horse farms all over Germany and analyzed quantitatively with a

Treatment with nitric oxide donors diminishes hyperinfection by Strongyloides venezuelensis in mice treated with dexamethasone.

The effects of using nitric oxide (NO) donors and inhibitors in experimental strongyloidiasis were showed using, both naïve and dexamethasone immunosuppressed BALB/c mice infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis. Aminoguanidine, an inhibitor of inducible NO synthase and LA419 a NO donor, were administered. Dexamethasone was used to induce immunosuppression. The study in BALB/c mice revealed increases in counts of fecal eggs, larvae in lungs and parasitic females following treatment with aminoguanidine, while mice treated with LA419 had limited egg output with low larval and adult recoveries.

Strategic control of fasciolosis in the inter-Andean valley of Cajamarca, Peru.

Fasciolosis is recognised as a major problem in dairy cattle in Cajamarca, Peru. The infection has an annual cycle, with the major period of infection from January to March. A control programme, involving two doses of the fasciolicide triclabendazole aimed at reducing the passage of Fasciola hepatica eggs on to the pasture, together with the use of the molluscicide, niclosamide, was evaluated against traditional treatment programmes. The double treatment regimen did not significantly reduce the overall parasite burden, as measured by faecal egg counts, but did control the parasites to a level

Effect of diatomaceous earth on parasite load, egg production, and egg quality of free-range organic laying hens.

The effectiveness of diatomaceous earth (DE) as a treatment against parasites and to increase feed efficiency and egg production of organically raised free-range layer hens was evaluated in 2 breeds of commercial egg layers [Bovan Brown (BB) and Lowmann Brown (LB)] that differ in their resistance to internal parasitic infections. Half the hens of each breed were fed diets supplemented with DE (2%). Their internal parasite loads were assessed by biweekly fecal egg counts (FEC) and by postmortem examination of the gastrointestinal tract. Supplementing DE in diets of LB hens, the more parasite-re

Quantification of infection with Schistosoma haematobium in relation to epidemiology and selective population chemotherapy. I. Minimal number of daily egg counts in urine necessary to establish intensity of infection.

The intensity of infection with Schistosoma haematobium (worm burden) can be approximated by quantifying the number of parasite eggs excreted in the urine. A new method of egg counting has been developed in which urine samples are passed through transparent Nuclepore filters (Nuclepore Corp., Pleasanton, Calif.). The method requires no staining, is rapid, and can be performed in the field. It has previously been reported, however, that there is a significant daily fluctuation in output of eggs in the urine of patients with schistosomiasis haematobia. In the present study, daily urine samples w

High-level pyrantel resistance in the hookworm Ancylostoma caninum.

While anthelmintic resistance is now a widely recognized issue in the livestock industries, its existence within companion animal medicine has been rarely established conclusively. We undertook a placebo-controlled in vivo trial to measure the efficacy of pyrantel embonate against pooled isolates of the hookworm Ancylostoma caninum from Brisbane, Australia. A statistically significant fall in adult worm burden was observed among dogs in the pyrantel treatment group compared to the control dogs (178.0+/-24.5 versus 239.7+/-14.0; p=0.02), equating to an efficacy of just 25.7% (95% CI, 15.0-35.1%

Interspecies Variation in the Susceptibility of a Wild-Derived Colony of Mice to Pinworms (Aspiculuris tetraptera).

Pinworms are common parasites in wild and laboratory rodents. Despite their relative nonpathogenicity in immunocompetent models, pinworm infections add an unwanted variable and may confound some types of research. For this reason, health monitoring programs and biosecurity measures aim to minimize the spread of pinworm infections into colonies free from the organisms. Wild-derived and laboratory strains of mice have shown varied susceptibility to infection with Aspiculuris tetraptera, the most commonly found murine pinworm. In particular, susceptibility is increased in wild-derived mice, young

Management practices associated with strongylid parasite prevalence on horse farms in rural counties of Kentucky.

Anthelmintic resistance among cyathostomin parasites is a wide-spread problem. The parasite control guidelines written by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) encourages the preservation of anthelmintic efficacy by reducing treatment frequency, using targeted deworming, and implementing environmental management practices. While there is knowledge regarding parasite management practices of affluent horse farms in the United States, surveys rarely explore the rural and underserved regions. The purpose of this study was to observe the management practices of horse farms in rura

First report on reduced efficacy of ivermectin on Oesophagostomum spp. on Swedish pig farms.

Anthelmintic efficacy was investigated in nine sow herds that had been identified with high faecal egg counts in a prevalence study. Faecal samples were collected from a total of 104 individual sows, and analysed using a centrifugal flotation McMaster technique. Samples positive for strongyle eggs were cultured to third stage larvae (L3) for genus identification and then further identified to Oesophagostomum species by sequencing. Following the initial sample collection, the sows were treated with either fenbendazole (FBZ, n = 5 farms) or ivermectin (IVM, n = 4 farms) at the recommended dosing

Comment on "The optimal timing of post-treatment sampling for the assessment of anthelminthic drug efficacy against Ascaris infections in humans".

A recent publication by Levecke et al. (Int. J. Parasitol, 2018, 8, 67-69) provides important insights into the kinetics of worm expulsion from humans following treatment with albendazole. This is an important aspect of determining the optimal time-point for post treatment sampling to examine anthelmintic drug efficacy. The authors conclude that for the determination of drug efficacy against Ascaris, samples should be taken not before day 14 and recommend a period between days 14 and 21. Using this recommendation, they conclude that previous data (Krücken et al., 2017; Int. J. Parasitol, 7, 26
